Old school Ragnar, Ulrik, and Njal

So, with the arrival of Logan Grimnar years ago, it suddenly became clear to the (atleast SW) players of this game that the more dynamic the model, the more impressive and the more presence they provoked on the table.

However, with that came the dissatisfaction of the old Ragnar, Ulrik, and Njal models and their stagnant, lifeless poses. Thankfully, Njal has been updated, but encased in TDA. I am curious as to how you fellow wolfbrothers have updated the classics with pics of your own versions of the Ragnar, Ulrik, and Njal (power armor) models...or any others I've forgotten.

To start, I'm submitting my current WiP model of Ragnar. I'll be out of town for a couple weeks and was eager to get this thread started, so he's not as complete as I'd like him, but w/e. C&C welcome.

There's my old, painted Ragnar in the background for comparison. (Blurred on purpose.. yuck!)

I'm sure these are pretty familiar to most people here:

WOLF LORD RAGNAR BLACKMANE, THE ALLSLAYER

WOLF PRIEST ULRIK THE SLAYER

EDIT:

Won't lie, Wulfenbane. Your Ragnar looks aawwwfuully familiar

Hehe, I confess I had in fact seen your Ragnar before. It's what inspired me months ago to start this up. I went with Gabriel instead of Kor'sarro as the base b/c I liked his wide-swinging pose, and a chainsword that wouldn't take as much work.. plus his contorted face held a nice feral gleam. Yours is still beautiful and I hope mine will be up to snuff when it comes time to paint.

Your Ulrik, though, is amazing. I hadn't seen it before now. I can't tell whether those nicks in the armor/helm are real or painted on, but they're perfect. Definitely gives the impression of one of the oldest in the chapter.

The chest was bulked out a little, but not much height was added to him. Likewise, the arms are stock and the head sits in the same position. The trick to true-scaling is the legs. The standard marine-leaning pose, coupled with their already stocky legs, makes them far shorter than they actually should be! I simply cut the legs at all the joints (crotch, knees, and I cut the feet out) and reposition the model. Different parts get lengthened depending on the original legs. Here only the upper thighs were lengthened by about 2 or 3 mm. Coupled with the extra height gained from a more upright pose, coupled with the joints, gives him a more proportional height (he stands about a full head taller than the original Ulrik).

@DV8, haha I got pretty "passionate" the last I spoke about your Ulrik

The Ulrik unfortunately doesn't stand in the ranks of my Great Company. It was a commission and has been at its new home for more than a year already (since the Golden Bolter competition).
I don't care much about who has it now. IMHO, it's still your work, creativity and vision.. you made it, and its yours to claim as a hobbyist/artist forever. No matter who owns it now! I will still consider it as yours, as it is a great work of art. You sir, are a master with a black belt in this hobby hahaha keep up the good work!

It's so hard to be original these days, but there is always plenty of inspiration to go all around.

I truly thought we would get a second wave with a new Ragnar sculpt. DV8s is a beautiful version, can see why it has inspired several of us. Njal is not great bang for the buck so haven't seen any conversion of him in PA out there.

As GW is winding down the metals, be interesting to see what they do with all the special characters. They could get redone by forge world or maybe get done as plastic kits.

love your model. my question is how did you remove his head so cleanly? i am trying to make my own wolf priest and have been sitting on it since i did not know how to do this without mutalating the model...

DV8, may I ask where it is you came upon that wolf bit on the plasma gun? Greenstuffed? It seems it could pass for a lion and work for my own purposes.

it's mounted on one of the bolters/boltguns/plasmagun of the SW sprue, can't recall which weapon immediatly

I hope that FW rumor is not true as they just came out with some nice chaos dwarfs for the fantasy range that I may try to get at some point this summer. I would hate to see them shut down for any length of time and I have to wait until the fall to get my hands on them and other bits.

DV8: Where is a DV8ed pa~Njal, Arjak, 'regular sized' Ulrik and Logan?

I know that you have a soft spot for Templars too, so you might as well do a Grimaldus whilst you're at it :P

His proportions are wrong, which is a shame considering how formidable he is in Helsreach.
