Old school Ragnar, Ulrik, and Njal

Awesome pose. Beautiful paint job. No offense though, my eyes went straight to that base. How in the world did you do that snow?? :)

Was your eye drawn to the base because its good or bad? The snow was quite simple. I made a mound of mulliput on a 40mm base and while it was setting pressed down my Ragnar conversion so it appeared to be soft snow. The wolf prints were also done at the same time using a paw from the WGT wolf pelt. Once it had all set I used shadow grey as a base coat and then built up multiple layers of skull white.

Well, legitimately b/c it was the brightest part of the model, but yes I think it's really good! It's super simple which gives it an elegance, but I see so many people trying "snow" flock and sometimes it works, but it doesn't really look like snow. This however does.
So, with the arrival of Logan Grimnar years ago, it suddenly became clear to the (atleast SW) players of this game that the more dynamic the model, the more impressive and the more presence they provoked on the table.

However, with that came the dissatisfaction of the old Ragnar, Ulrik, and Njal models and their stagnant, lifeless poses. Thankfully, Njal has been updated, but encased in TDA. I am curious as to how you fellow wolfbrothers have updated the classics with pics of your own versions of the Ragnar, Ulrik, and Njal (power armor) models...or any others I've forgotten.

To start, I'm submitting my current WiP model of Ragnar. I'll be out of town for a couple weeks and was eager to get this thread started, so he's not as complete as I'd like him, but w/e. C&C welcome.

There's my old, painted Ragnar in the background for comparison. (Blurred on purpose.. yuck!)

I hope you dont mind me stealing this idea, I was planning on converting ragnar because of the extreme derp of his model.

DV8: Where is a DV8ed pa~Njal, Arjak, 'regular sized' Ulrik and Logan? :P

Well I already have Arjac; it's not much of a scratch-build, but he does well enough. I don't field him enough to really care to build another one:

ARJAC ROCKFIST, THE ANVIL OF FENRIS

As for Njal, I don't use him at all. He's meh in my books fluff-wise, and a terrible character. And why would I build a "regular" sized Ulrik? ;)

I know that you have a soft spot for Templars too, so you might as well do a Grimaldus whilst you're at it B)

His proportions are wrong, which is a shame considering how formidable he is in Helsreach.

Actually, I love Templars, and for a long period of time (almost the entirety of 3rd Edition), they were my primary army. I am seriously considering picking them up again, not necessarily as an army to paint, but predominantly as a labor of love. But we'll see; I still have a lot on my plate and the last thing I need is another power-armored army.

While I agree that particular helm has always looked rounded to me too, I hopefully trimmed enough off the dome to where it's not AS rounded.. my camera skills are just lacking. And even still.. that helm is 5x better than the original shoulder wolf head thingy, imo.

Hey, DV8. If you happen to pop in here.. I've been trying to see it on your model, but did you happen to sculpt on those two sidelock braids on the original Ragnar model (sitting on the left side of his head) ?

Oh, and thanks all for the compliments on the GS! Sadly I can't take all the credit. I used this to get most of the back done ( I HIGHLY recommend it!), and patched up the multitude of seams later. The stuff around the shoulders is all me though >.>

Do you let the GS cure and then blend it in or do you blend it in while still un-cured?

I did indeed, although they're not exactly sculpted. I simply cut them off another head and stuck them on, green-stuffing the gap to blend it in.

You know what.. I've been letting it cure and blend it in after, and now that you mention it, it'd be so much easier and less stressful to not wait. Though usually I press a batch of fur before going to bed, letting it cure overnight, so I'd have to readjust my timing to use it un-cured.

Reason being, even though GS is still very pliable when cured, it still requires glue to keep it in position b/c there's still retention of its previous form. Blending an only slightly-cured press would work waaay better. Silly me....

@ Wolfebane Maybe you could add some GS teeth to the wolf helm like DV8 has done in the above pic. I think its the lack of the teeth thats making it look odd.

A fair point. I'd forgotten all about those teeth. I'll see about doing that tonight.

Teeth placed, other putty work finished, even redid his "dogtag" runestone at his throat. I'll hopefully get an updated pic tonight with some base colors.

This was brought up in my WiP thread. Someone suggested that I remove the metal studs over his right eyebrow. I left them for aesthetics, but the commenter didn't think Wolves used studs. I know they do, but it made me think whether Ragnar would have any or just not have bothered with them.

Thoughts?

I believe some of the SW "sergeant" from 2nd edition had studs, at least I know the Long Fang "sergeant" did, as he was and still is one of my favorite SW models. I think the Grey Hunter one also had studs. Should be enough reason for you :P don't over complicate it by thinking, do it with what feels right. If it looks good and adds to the models character, then do it. Don't let it or anyone stop you for adding character and individuality to your models.....and trust me when I say it

Here is my rendition of Ragnar, finished him about a week ago, very happy with the result. He is built around the 'wolf guard with power claws' model, which was released a few months before the new codex.

Yes, he's a baby blue space wolf, deal with it. And yes, i know about the black mark on his right foot, and the metalics shining through on the bottom of his feet, i don't have any more recent photos but he has since been touched up.

Great paint job and pose. Personally though, I think he looks a bit pale, but that could just be the pictures. I'd consider giving him a VERY thinned out Ogryn Flesh wash to bring back some color.

Oh, and I like that the three of us (including DV8) gave him mutton chops. :whistling:
