Venerable Dreadnoughts

I used two of these in a 3k game against BA and they alone accounted for 10 assault marines, a sanguinary priest, a round of lascannons at them, two strom ravens and a vindicator. I can't remember whether or not it was the riflemen dread that killed the baal predator or the long fangs. Hitting on twos is a big plus, it accounted for half of the above kills.

I enjoy the potential for more hits and the ability to make my grey hunters who only lost combat once got to reroll and stay alive the whole game. I also enjoy the modeling potential with the vendread model. I was thinking of making one but was unsure if I could make a competitive list with one in it.

Would you suggest getting one or would you suggest doing my vindie quire first? I need to model most of my army first I will be four grey hunters short of my first list. I still need land speeders, Long Fangs, rune priests, wolf priests, wolf lords, terminators and blood claws. I can buy one thing for 50 or so dollars every two weeks. Would this be a good choice or should I buy two speeders instead?

I would go ahead and get another box of grey hunters first. This would give you those last four grey hunters for your list, and extra bits for the blood claws and long fangs. Or, you could build 2 each of wolf lords, rune priests, and wolf priests from the left over parts of that one grey hunter box. Then save your extra money for the next two weeks and buy another dread and maybe if you have enough a box of standard assault marines.

You clearly love your dreadnoughts, so go ahead and get it. I've never regreted buying a model. Use the assault marines with your left over bits to start making some blood claws!

I use a venerable dread with an assault cannon and like it. It tends to be very hard to kill, and its high accuracy and weapon skill are very nice. Of course, they wouldn't be as good for MSU lists, and I don't think venerable autocannon dreads are necessarily an efficient use of points because they don't make the best use of the increased weapon skill and ballistic skill.
Last 2.5 game I played I used 2 ven dreads to great effect. One was armed with a plasma canon and a dccw with heavy flamer. The two templates ate deepstriking demon squads whole. The other was armed with las canon and missile and sat near my long fangs. This worked great as blood leters came in to nail my long fangs, they instead ran straight into my dread instead. Granted I didn't have my double strength dccw, I didn't need it.
i find it hard to field a ven dread beacuse we have so many different elite choices to chose from. i can all most always find other ways to use those points on a scout squad or wolf guard or even a lone wolf

Very true, if you're playing a largley footslogging or drop pod army, Lone wolves, scouts and Wolf guard are the best way to go. But if you're all mech'd up, throwing down 2 more threatening pieces of army really makes your opponent choose what to shoot at.

Second.

A couple additional and hard to kill pieces of armor go nicely with a mech force, regardless of how you look at it. A bit too expensive at 1500 and below, I downgrade them to regular dreads then

I always used to take venerable dreadnoughts. Usually in a drop pod with heavy flamer and plasma cannon. For smaller games (around 2000pts or less) it makes itself a 'death-star'. I would drop it right were it would do the most damage, the dice gods be willing, and it would become a wonderful distraction and would rack up quite a tally.

I would use one in lists >1500pts. Otherwise they are to expensive and another unit of grey hunters, or even a lone wolf wold be better. BUT, big butt, I have a love for plasma, and dreadnoughts, so if I can't afford ven., I go standard. Also, as a side note, if you do take heavy flamers, and plasma cannon, you will be wasting some of the points on venerable, as the higher BS will have almost no impact on shooting then.

Would the dreads not be useful in the foot slogging army? They'd keep up with the squads and provide good support for them. I'd think even better than in a mech list.

Dreadnoughts need to sit back in a good position, or deploy with drop pods. They don't have a high enough armor rating to foot slog it, even if it is better than a rhino's. But have no doubt, that if you are facing an aggressive, non-shooty army, foot-slogging can work. Back in 4th edition, I sent a dreadnought, just a standard dreadnought foot-slogging. Well, he very shortly met a carnifex, and they joined in combat. While getting both arms ripped off, the dreadnought continued to "kick-it" with the carnifex. He tied the carnifex up the whole game, and brought it to within a wound of its life.

Yep. One of my biggest disappointments with our codex was that we lost the ability to take our Venerable Dreadnoughts as HQ choices, especially when we gained the 4x HQ selection FOC. If we still had that inwould take one every game. Now I only take a Dread every now and then since they have to compete with Wolf Guard, Wolf Scouts, and even Lone Wolves.

That being said, it's really fun to use one of our Venerables with a WTN to curb-stomp Blood Angels Furiosos with Blood Talons. "Think your just gonna drop pod in over here and shred up my Grey Hunters? Think again, little fella."
