Inquisitor in power armour

Recommended Posts

Lately I felt like experimenting a bit since I wanted to find a unique scheme for an Inquisitor's armour. I mean if you have absolut power your armour must look the part. I thought of red and gold - good but too classic, too Roman. I thought of gold armour - can be too "blingy" and a bit boring. I thought about purple and gold/ silver - not that exclussive and you may be mistaken for a Sllanesh worshiper. And then it hit me... Marble! That's the sollution to my problem.

Now marble can be very hard to paint but I experimented with washes in order to get a quick and dirty marble effect. Not the best marble effect out there but considering the speed and simplicity of the technique I think it's pretty decent.

And now you can take a look and tell me what you think:

As typical I zoomed past what you wrote and looked the pics first and the first thought that came to my head was you were making a weathered statue. Then I read what you wrote and I have to say it looks good and you achived what you were going for in terms of a dirty marbled look.

Always have hated that axe on that mini though...

But why? I mean it's totally realistic and not disproportionate at all much like most weapons on GW minis. :)

It's not the proportions, I think it's just the aethetics of it. It simply doesn't look right to me. :D

To be honest, I would not have known it was supposed to be marble if I hadn't read your post (I look at pretty pictures before I read). I would suggest more pronounced mineral deposits - maybe some darker ones. I like the concept, but it immediately makes me think of the color scheme for The Cleaved as is.

Thanks everybody! To be honest I myself thought that it's not looking exactly like marble and it has a certain... Nurgle vibe to it. I also don't like the veins on the shoulderpad but since they'll mostly be covered by a decal I won't bother changing them.

In case anybody wants to try the technique here's a mini recipe:

- Basecoat with a greenish colour.

- Paint 3 layers of diluted Bleached bone. You could also try overbrushing Bleached bone instead.

- Wash with Devlan mud.

- While the wash is still wet add patches of yellow, blue, purple and realy any other wash you like. You can blend some of the washes and leave others more pronounced.

- Highlight edges with Bleached Bone.

- Highlight extreme edges with Skull White.

Wasn't there a Chaos Lord model in an old WD (in the mid 200's iirc) that had been painted to a marble effect? Back when the model was was fresh and new?

Cloack's finished! So much for being original and not ripping off Roman style cloacks...

Recipe for the red:

- Basecoat with Mechrite Red

- Re-basecoat with Red Gore

- Paint recesses with a 2:1 Red Gore: Chaos Black mix

- Paint deepest recesses with a 1:1 Red Gore: Chaos Black mix

- Wash with a 1:1 mix of Devlan Mud and Badab Black

- Highlight with Red Gore

- Highlight wth a 1:1 mix of Red Gore and Blood Red

- Highlight with Blood Red

- Highlight wth a 1:1 mix of Blood Red and Blazing Orange

- Highlight with Blazing Orange

- Glaze with a 1:4 mix of Baal Red and Water

- Highlight with Blazing Orange

Actually the recipe is easier than it sounds beacause the sharp folds of the cloack make highlighting very straightforward.

just a tip for the marble take some very thin 1:1 chaos black and enchanted blue and add some very thin grains then where the browner deposits are reline one side with you high light colour skull white it will really make it pop and look less grimy but otherwise looks awsome!

It's beautifully painted, really nice effect. Doesn't scream 'Inquisitor' to me though, if I could make any kind of suggestion it would be to have a look through your bitz box (or a bitz site) for some kind of Inquisitorial icons or something? GK box might be a good place to look?

Edit: Having said that, you might be planning to add some in paint on his armour later, in which case, ignore me! ;)

I guess I'm too lazy to paint an icon. I do have lots of decals and a few pots of decal seting sollution though...

Thanks everybody! :P

@ Retributis: To be honest I painted him up as an Inquisitor just as an excuse to paint the mini. I was never a fan of bare heads on armoured minis and I hate converting metal minis so the helmet had to stay. ;)

My only criticism is that you could have and I believe should have made the extra effort to put the Inquisitorial emblem on the axe head or even Green Stuffed the =][= into an axe head. Similar to the Juggernaut Chaos Lord seen here, his axe head already has the 3 lines present in the Inquisitorial emblem. This Guy's Axe

The irony is that I have the FW brass etch Inquisitorial emblems that I could have used. The problem is I usually assemble and undercoat minis without any specific plan in mind. When I finaly get around to painting them, sometimes years later, I often find out that I could have assembled them differently. Unfortunately I usualy just want to be done with the pile of unpainted minis so I don't have the courage to strip and reasemble them. I'm lazy, I know...
