1 of each of the original legions (pre heresy)

First guy I finished, Word Bearer.

I used a Space Marine Chaplain with Crozius model. And the only real changes I made to him was to dermel an Aquilla off his rear end, and I took the medalion cross thingy off his belt plate. I also flipped the vents on his power plant upside down and added a third in the back on the middle.

Next Guy I'm working on, The Dark Angel

This guy is not finished, I have been waiting for pieces for almost 2 months that hinder me going further with this guy.

So far he's made up of the Mkiii Iron armour body and right arm from Forgeworld, the left arm and sword are from the character conversion kit also from Forgeworld. The Helmet is a steam knight helm from maxmini and the helmet wings are Dark Angel wings of the lion, at least i think thats what they are called.

The cape is made from green stuff and plasticard, and the only real dificult conversion piece of this character was extening the left arm a little so he could hold his sword with 2 hands, I added an upper part of a space marine arm ( the piece you put the glue on to put shoulder pads on). It looked really bad until i added the shoulder pad.

The paint is nowhere near done, but I plan on having it mostly black with a green hue instead of grey hightlighting.

The Emperor's Children

This legion is troublesome, to get the right shade of purple had me using more paint in the try than on the model. I even ended up scrapping my first attempt at this legion.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y25/Vallieres/18%20Legions/Emperors%20Children/IMG_0163.jpg

The legs were hand carved from the assault marines legs, and the shoulder pads where elevated with green stuff to make him blockier. I decided to try again because i thought the model turned out chalky and I didnt like the soft edges very much.

My second attempt I chose to again use a metal model as a base. I chose the Emperor's Champion. I also wanted to have the back-pack with the eagle heads, and there was a shield I found in a site I will not name because they are being sued.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y25/Vallieres/18%20Legions/Emperors%20Children/IMG_0280.jpg

I think I may cut the sword off and use a Sanguinary Guard blade so I can work in more Wing imagery. Because the 7ft wing shield isnt enough

Thanks for the kind words guys,

Next up, my Iron Hands Character.

This Guy is made using the mkiii Iron Armor torso, and the Forgeworld Character Conversion kit. I wanted to make a lot of this guy bionic and have it showing to accentuate the pride an Iron Hands Marine feels in his upgrades.

The giant axe is from max mini under the steam punk weapons, and the shoulder pads come from a company currently being sued by GW, they sure do make great stuff, I bought most of their stuff.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y25/Vallieres/18%20Legions/ironhands/IMG_0215.jpg

I have since taken the head off the model and will be opting for a bald terminator head. pictures of that coming up. aswell as pics of the previous legions which are nearing completion, and the ones that are nowhere near.

One thing that vexes me is what I should do with the giant axe. I dont know if i want to make it simply metal, or paint it as a power weapon, any suggestions?

I think you should definitely give the axe some paint seeing as how the rest of the model is black and silver as well. Maybe a nice dash of red. It would look nice and also somewhat symbolize the AdMech relationship with the IH.

Another model I want to show off, because the technique in my opinion is one of the coolest.

My Ultramarine Character!

My inspiration for this character was from the book The First Heretic by ADB. In the book the ultramarines descend on Monarchia and one of the characters describes the marines as being cobalt and trimmed in gold with an ornate U on the armour. I decided to go literally cobalt, or as close as i could.

He is made up of Forgeworld mkii crusader armour torso, mkiii iron armor legs, maxmini steam knight helm, assault marine sergeant shield and sword and bolt pistol.

I like the dynamic look of this character, it looks like he just killed something and is looking for another foe on the field.

The armour effect comes from basecoating in mithril silver, and then 4-5 thin even coats of asureman blue wash.

I really need to touch up the white on this guy when it comes to the shield, it looks like really thick amature painting.

I still feel like there is something missing with the armour though, like a mat finish or something

Great work, though it is tough for me to adjust to the helmets. I know it would be strange to have everybody helmet-less and you probably don't want the modern 40K ones (though there are "armour through the ages packs) but it is starting to look a little less like marines and more like knights. Especially the last ultramarine. The cobalt and metal effect is great... except with that helmet, the shield and sword... you get what I'm saying :-)

Still, a thousand times better than I could ever do.

PS How about making some ranged specialists? You still have a lot of chapters ahead of you which will undoubtedly be close combat specialists (SW, World Eaters spring to mind off the bat) so I'd try to mix in a plasma/meltagun Salamander or something like that :tu:

@ gunslinger. If you check out the collected visions you will see exactly what I am trying to do. And for the most part I'm using GW recognized bits. My aim through this was to capture the pre heresy and heresy era of knights in space. Alot of these guys where literally knights of sorts before the emperor got to them 200-ish years ago. And I agree with you about the ultramarine, the one thing that you might not be able to see is the bolt pistol in his hands.

@ the damned. Thanks for noticing, I did infact buy the collected visions book, and have all the pictures I wanted to represent tabbed. The ultramarine is almost exactly what I saw in the book. And just wait till I get my thousand sons guy up, I'm waiting for literally 1 piece before I comete him and do some painting.

@ volgon. I like the red I dea, and the mars thing makes the most sense. But instead of painting red, I've decided to buy a rusting agent from a crafts store. There's a description of it in the modeling painting how to section. I think a rusted iron looking edged axe would look sweet

I didn;t mean that it was necessarily wrong or that I didn't think it looked great, just a bit too stylized for me. I have the collected visions, but you have to keep in mind that those are stylized artworks. I.e. you also paint Calgar like the models and not the GIANT with a tiny little head sitting on a throne you see all over the internet. Bombastic artwork doesn't make for realistic looking models. Again, I will stress that this is purely my opinion. The execution is fantastic.

PS The only thing I would disagree with you about would be that they were knights... before the SM the Emperor fought with bolter-wielding proto-marines etc. What makes you think there were any knights on Terra? That has been used for Caliban as a generally backward (technologically) planet, but Terra most definitely had the quivalent of strom-troopers or Rangers/Delta Force etc. There was old night, true, but Terra was still far beyond Earth in terms of overall technology. I can't see myself imagining any knights on Terra pre-marines. In terms of their ethic, perhaps that was what the Emperor decided to "put" in them, or pick precisely those individuals that were knightly or with some notion of chivalry, but still....

Anyways, I didn't want to get too much into this and feel free to ignore what I said. It's not like I'm trying to convince you too change the style of this attempt. By all means create it to fit your vision :-)

@ gunslinger. I know exactly what you mean, and I respect your opinion, but I have to admit, I didn't even really consider the Terran marines who are part of legions. The books mostly focus on the marines which come from the primarchs homeworld, and in my head (with help from the stylized pictures in collected visions) I used my imagination and the imagery described in bits by the authors. I'd also like to point out that I came to the Horus heresy side of the 40k universe long before I ever looked into the current stuff, so my frame of reference is more... Mythical than military.

And your right, it is a stylistic choice, and these models are by no means playable, on some of my future marines I will be focusing less on the knightly aspect, I don't want carbon copie of 18 dudes. For example, I'm still deciding on whether to use my pre heresy forgeworld missle launcher on the iron warrior or my alpha legionnaire. Part of me wants to make the alpha legion guy as bland as un-unique as possible to make him blend in with his other battlebrothers, just like how I picture them in my head

Finished my Iron Hands guy!

I took the original Forgeworld character conversion kit head off and went for a terminator bare head. I did cut most of the neck off the head because I wanted it to be closer to the torso piece, giving him more a look of being in really large armour. I wouldnt have had to do that if it werent for the legs on this model, they are much thinner than the iron armour and give him chicken legs; resizing the neck evens the model out a bit.

For the blade on the cog axe, I used a rusting agent available at Michael's. The tutorial for it is actually on this forum under modeling or painting.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y25/Vallieres/18%20Legions/ironhands/IMG_0304.jpg

the reason the axe looks so wet is because it is. the rusting agent literally takes hours, and this was my 4-5th coat on top of 4-5 coats of the iron agent. I was hoping for more of a red rust look, but this is what I was looking for.

My Night Lords Guy!

This guy is far from done, and progress is very slow, I waited for months for pieces for this guy and I'm still waiting for skulls on chains and a shoulder pad.

The inpiration for this guy comes from a guy in warseer who is doing the same kind of project as I am, His model had an amazing looking big axe with cat of nine tails on the back, and I loved it! I couldnt imagine a scarier weapon for a Night Lord to have. I did consider a chain axe halbred but settled on the axe. The large amount of green stuff on this character shows real bad right now but I will be trimming in the future making the armour more seamless.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y25/Vallieres/18%20Legions/night%20lords/IMG_0317.jpg

The body is an assault marine body and legs, the arms are mkiii iron armor. the axe is from the black orcs set i think, ( i bought 2-3 choppas, and a few chaos axes aswell because i wanted to make sure the size was appropriate. the flail on the end is from the flagelators set. there is also a spare dark eldar head hanging on his belt with green stuff.

I will probably start and finish this guy as soon as i get the last piece.

My next is Raven Guard!

This guy is literally made of 2 pieces. Kayvann Shrike Captain, and a max mini jump pack!

I didnt even know this character (kayvann) existed when i pictured this guy in my head. all i knew is that I wanted the beak helm, jump pack, and twin lightning claws. As i shopped around, I had in a bit store shopping cart: beak helmet, lightning claws, running legs, torso etc... and then I saw a picture of the model I ended up buying when looking for the color schemes on google. it was bitter sweet because it stripped away my pride in imagining such a neat character, but it was also cool to be able to get the model you want in one shot... just like my emperors children model.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y25/Vallieres/18%20Legions/Raven%20guard/IMG_0313.jpg

I only broke out my dremel tool for one little thing that I felt I had to get rid of. The acquilla on the chest behind the harness; all that is visible is the tips of the wongs, but it was enough for me to get my smallest bit and buzz it off.

My plan for this character is to use very very little white, these guys are stealthy and I want to keep it that way. the biggest accent with this guy will be the green shoulder pad and the lightning claws. I know the grey stands out a lot now, but I will be black washing over the grey to dull it a bit. the white will be reserved for the chest and knee emblems, and whatever else i feel like.

My Blood Angels guy!

This guy is made of the Blood Angels Vanguard veteran with jump pack model. the only thing i changed was the Jump pack, I used a max mini jump pack

The only paint I've done so far was white spray, watered down red gore basecoat, heavy black wash, and the pieces that will be black or metal coloured are painted black.

C&C welcome!

Raven Guard guy almost done!

The only thing left on this guy is the base, which i probably wont do for a while.

The lightning claws were painted the way as shown in the space wolves edition of white dwarf. the effect is a bit lost because of my lack of skill with that style of painting, and the fact that these claws are much more narrow than the ones on the wulfen that they are shown on.

got a little bit of cleaning up to do with this guy. the model is very precariously balanced and falls over constantly! thus scrathing and nicking the paint off some areas.

My Thousand sons guy!

I've been waiting for a pointing arm for soooo long for this guy, I have all the other parts, but I cant start until its all on there. my technique for this guy will be similar to the ultra marines guy and the blue, but will be a dark roan red. I only have the surplice and the power khepesh painted so far, and theres still some pieces i plan on adding, like scrolls and oaths of moment.

power wepaon is done the same way as the lightning claws on the ravenguard.

the pointing hand, when added, will also have some sort of fireball shooting out of the tip of the finger, any tips on how im supposed to do that, im still figuring it out.

tips and C&C welcome

I think Chapterhouse Studios do resin muzzle flash pieces? You could try one of those, although it would be really tricky to attach securely to a finger.

  • 1 month later...

Hey Guys, I know it's been a while, I've been busy with a lot of stuff going on, and have been painting many different things, so my progress over the months since was very little in appearance because of the volume of models.

Here's what the complete model looks like for the Thousand Sons guy, he is still unpainted, because I jsut got the last part I needed a few days ago.

I ended up using one of the exhaust thruster flame thingy from the maxmini pre heresy jump packs.

the back pack is an early chaos backpack.
