Guardians of the Covenant - An Unforgiven Tale

I
t's said that of all the progeny of the I Legion, the Guardians of the Covenant are the strictest followers of the Lion’s tenants, laid down on Caliban during his time in the Order. Nothing was more sacred to a Knight Lord of Caliban than his sword, his shield, and the heraldry upon it. To the Guardians, their own heraldry has been born solely on the merit and blood of its forebears, each new Order Master inheriting it upon the death of his former Liege. Though defensive in nature, the traditional combat shields of the Guardians turn them into a bulwark which none may breach. Controlled, steel tempered strength is the first lesson many learn. It is highly customary for veterans to wear pages of the Requiem Angelis, the Verbatim, and the Codex Astartes upon their armor and shield. Tradition also states that no script, large or small, may be placed upon a Guardian, less they have penned it with their own hand.

Of the 10 Orders of the Guardians of the Covenant, the 5th Order bears distinct attention and significance. High within a quartered field the red mountains of Mortikah VII sit. Below them lay the green of Caliban’s fabled woods, adopted homeworld of Lion El'Jonson. The connecting bone quarters are mirrors and opposites, whose encompassing presence act as both watcher and aggressor. They symbolize the blinding strength of purpose and its counterpart, the unflinching eye of judgment. A Knight's dedication to duty.

Very impressive work so far. I also like the Fluff included with the Mini's pics. These types of logs always appeal to me more than just photos with brief descriptions. I do have one question though. I recognize most of the individual bitz that make up this marine but where did the torso come from? I would guess that you smoothed out an existing chest piece and possibly bulked it out with putty. I would like to see some WIP pics if you have any or just an explanation if not.

Thank you for the wonderful comments everyone.

Almost all the models and parts that will be used for the army are an amalgamation of different armies. As far as marines go, there will be a mixture of new Blood Angels, Dark Angels, plastic Grey Knights, regular Space Marines, Ravenwing parts, Converted Space Hulk terminators, and lots of Chaos Space Marine bits. There is also a lot of fantasy items I have taken from the Bretonnian plastics, undead plastics and from old school Mordhiem minis. I have had a head start in the "doing" portion, which will allow me to post up new photos and stories more frequently.

(Next on the slate: I will be taking a look at why the Guardians wear robes of crimson).

Mikhail - Your guess is very close about the chest-piece. It is just a normal loyalist marine torso that had its eagle removed. I had to really think whether this was going to be more of an art-scale project, but in the end, I decided to stay with normal sized marines, but add as much weight and bulk where I could. I will make sure to post WIP's of the rest of his Demi-Brethren.

What answered that call was 8 full Orders of Unforgiven, determined to not let the xenos deny them of the repentance and confession of Osmunt’s black soul. Over 900 Guardians of the Covenant were led into battle by their Order Masters and Grand Master, shattering through the Hulk blockade and unleashing fiery rain upon the surface of the war torn world. It is very rare for any Astartes Chapter to fight at near or total strength in a single engagement, rare indeed is the foe that would warrant such strength. The sheer number of Orks that had survived planetfall dwarfed imagination. Relentlessly the Guardians bolstered the plains before Adhemar’s fortifications and completely surrounded the primary population factories, ensuring there was equally no way in, as no way out. Their bulwark stemmed the green tide and traded their lives for time, as three bone white ghosts began to hunt for their Fallen brother, while an entire world looked the other way.

It was said in the minutes before the horde met the Guardians on open ground, Grand Master Talmanrues ordered the Chapter’s Paladin Abshelm to draw steel, and plant his Heavenfall Blade into the ground before him, a grim tradition that echoed from a dead world. Honor demands death and duty demands not a single step backward, until the blade is returned. Such is the teachings of the Lion. With a blinding sense of purpose, the Guardians of the Covenant grimly looked upon the face of their death and shook the very ground with their charge.

Of the 106 Knight-Brothers of the 5th Order, 14 souls survived. Order Master Weirnotte was shattered beyond recognition and interred into a sarcophagus, to become the only remaining Ancient in the 5th Order. The Chapter's Paladin Abshelm was given Weirnotte's command over the 5th Order, and has been instrumental in rebuilding not only the Order, but the Chapter itself during the century after the conflict. With the loss of so many, Chapter wide reconstruction was required, no longer maintaining unique 1st and 2nd Orders, much akin to their Brother's Deathwing and Ravenwing. Guardian Orders have since been maintained with strict tenants for self reliance, 1st through 5th acting as full Battle-Orders, each with 106 standing Knight-Brothers. The remaining Chapter relics suits of Tactical Dreadnought Armor now stand to gird the 10 veteran Knights in 1st Brethren unit in each of the Battle Orders, as well as their Order Master and his retainers. 15 suits of armor to each of the 5 Battle Orders, now representing their parent Chapter on a smaller scale, spreading thinly the best resources, in order to gain greatest advantage.

To honor the sacrifice given by the Guardians of the Covenant, Supreme Grand Master Azrael granted a rare honorificum. All survivors were granted the right to paint their right shoulder guard in bone white, and wear upon its field the broken red sword of the Lion. Fearlessness in the face of certain death, strength of purpose and nobility of sacrifice against all odds. Let the Imperium tremble at the resilience of the Knight Lords of Caliban, for none may wear our highest honor. Let their robes show the color of their duty, of their sacrifice, and of their worth. Let every battle-brother in the years to come know of their courage.

The soul of Osmunt has since taken residence within the cold and uncaring halls of the Rock, much to the satisfaction of the Interrogator-Chaplains Sapphon and Asmodai.

Thank you for the comments!

You're right about taking a few liberties with the two paragraphs of cannon fluff, I have had some ideas swirling around in my head that needed a starting point, and enough of a tragedy, in order to be made real. Hopefully people can forgive the fleshing out.

The heavy bolter marine is just a WIP, but enough is done to show where I was getting to. The Nightvision photos (minus the orks!) are previews of what are next on the block, the remaining 8 tactical marines, all robed, and a Plasma Cannon Dreadnought.

I've spent most of today painting more tactical marines and thinking about what exactly I would like to include in my 1500 point list. Winning isn't all that important, rather, working towards a goal that can easily be built upon after.
