New(ish) Ultra recruit

Greetings :D.

I've been on the fringes of 40k for a while, not really playing and only painting the odd model, but i've decided to get back into it, choosing Ultramarins as my main army to collect. I very much doubt i'll be playing competitively, as i'm only going to be playing/painting 40k as a side project when i want a break from other systems that i do play competitively. As a result, this is mainly going to be a painting/casual game project, although i'm not adverse to building lists that are an effective mix of competitive and fluff based forces. I've only played a few of games of 5th ed and those have been spaced out over 18 months, but i played quite a bit of 4th and a lot of 3rd, so i'm only partially clueless :P.

I've always had an affinity for the Third, so i decided to go with them as my main force with support elements from other companies (Vets from the 1st, Speeders from the 7th etc). I was very tempted to re-create the 2nd exactly following the picture from C:SM, with all the appropriate armour Mks in the appropriate squads etc, but decided i'd rather go my own way with mixing in armour & weapon Mks. Plus, Fabian is just cooler than Sicarius.

Anyway, enough with rambling introductions and onto some more interesting stuff.

These are the photos of my first couple of test pieces. I've put them up here for the moment, but as i do more i'll post them in the proper place (WiP/HoH or Blog, depending on how often i update). For the moment these will be the only models i have chance to paint for my 3rd, as i've got quite a lot of stuff to finish for other systems in order to attend events. Hopefully i'll be able to get back into painting Ultras sometime between July & August (depending on how other painting goes).

Sergeant of the 3rd (un-named at the moment). His eyes look weird in the photo, plus you can really see the slight mold slipping on his sword, but luckily neither of these is that noticeable irl. I really like painting on battle honours that my models have earned, so the kill marking on his chainsword and patterning on his left vambrace have been earned in blood, so to speak.

welcome toxichobbit.

we all enter the hobby with different aims and it can be rewarding on many levels.

i really like the weathering and battle damage on the sergeant.. if your stuck for a name, the sub-forum has a stickied thread for listed names, 3rd co included

I was just wondering how you painted up your Ultramarines. It looks like it's Regal Blue and then Enchanted Blues, but I'm not sure. Maybe a mix of the two?

Great painting though ;)

Edit:

but as i do more i'll post them in the proper place (WiP/HoH or Blog, depending on how often i update).

Just a quick comment about this: you don't have to post your stuff in the WiP/HoH sections if you don't want to. If you look in the BA section, there's quite a few painting logs that are only there. I just thought I'd mention it :D

Thanks all for the welcome and comments .

GC08 - i had a look at the stickied thread, unfortunately it doesn't list a name for this particular sergeant (5th Squad, 3rd Company), but it does list some of the other company members so it'll be a very useful resource.

Exile Blue (P3) base. Exile Blue + Black shade. Highlights of Exile Blue + Ultramarines Blue - Ultramarines Blue - Ultramarines Blue + Frostbite (P3) - Frostbite.

If you wanted to use just the Citadel range then Regal Blue is very close to Exile Blue and Space Wolf Grey is very close to Frostbite. You can probably use either of the paint ranges and still get pretty much the same effect.

I can't really give an exact recipe because i tend to paint by eye, rather than using a formula. Usually when mixing colours i start with a 50/50 mix then add more of one colour or the other to taste.

Captain Idaho - any areas of stubble like the shaven scalp are really easy. It's just a mid-grey (although you can use yellows, browns or red/oranges for diffrerent hair colours) with a mid-flesh tone mixed in. The mix is then watered down alightly and has a little bit of Mixing Medium added. It should be just on the verge of opaque-transluscent, so that any shading/highlighting on the skin still shows through, but it still tints the area with grey to give the look of stubble. Then just follow the hair/beard line. That's all there is to it :).

I much prefer the shaven headed look to GWs bald look. It has a more millitary vibe to it, giving a nice hint of discipline rather than hair loss. I'll probably go for shaven on most of my marines, although i might give also do some mohicans/jarhead cuts on the scouts to show them as fresh(ish) recruits.
