Resurrecting tanks

Recommended Posts

Ive been on ebay again and ended up with a couple of new tanks in need of attention.

I managed to score a razorback with a roof mounted bolter and half a predator. It had the turret but no sponsons.

Ive started to strip them and I also bought a sponson sprue. As I was using the boltors on the pred I had the laser cannons left over.

When I put them together they looked loads better than the standard bolter razorback. After a bit of kitbashing this is what I ended up with (its only tacked together)

I think it sits well on the Rhino

The predator was more of a mess and once I started stripping it I found it was blue painted over red, painted over green, painted over black primer.

I added a new rhino front and sponsons. Im just about to make the hatches so they will be on tomorrow.

I wouldnt mind some feedback on the front spikes though. Are they chaos spikes? If so what do you think. Keep them on an Ultra vehicle??

Heres a the (almost) finished armour it'll be added to

Let me know what you think about the razorback cannon and predator spikes

Very nice stuff! I'm a big fan of rescued models and you've done a cracking job on the colour as well.

Thanks, I sometimes think I end up spending more on recaimed models than if I bought them off the shelf but I enjoy bringing them back to life.

The three that are almost done are off ebay but the new predator is the worst of all. I think Im going to try and copy my other razorbacks forgeworld armour and see if I can make it out of plasticard. I think the 1st razorback looks great beefed up with armour so I want to try and copy that (seeing as FW have taken the armour off their website due to the molds been knackered)

Group shot with Ebay LR that Im not going near until the rhinos are done

I made the fatal mistake of having a "look" around ebay the other day. 3 days later I ended up with a vindicator in need of some attention.

It had been built to but needed the hatches and dozer blade.

Ive sprayed the base colour and main shadow lines. Ive also built a techmarine

I wanted to keep the figure different to Chronos (as Ive got him for my LR) but I ended up making him look very similar. Ive tried to go for "Ive seen you now all I have to do is press this button" look.

Let me know what you think

You're doing a great job on the salvaged vehicles. Any secrets to success? Do you strip the old paint with Simple Green, or a similar product? I'm considering going this route as opposed to dropping roughly $35 for every Rhino or Drop pod! ^_^

Thanks.

It depends on how they have been put together.

If they have been put together with plastic glue (the type that melts the plastic) then I just put it in a bath of Kitchen cleaner (Flash power spray in the UK) and after a couple of days clean it up outside with a jet washer (thats right a garden power washer)

If its been stuck with super glue or the kind that doesnt melt the plastics then I prise it apart, soak it in a bath of cleaner and then either jet wash it or brush it before reassembling.

If its in a real state I'll clean it up best I can then use Squadron filler to fill the big gaps before sanding, priming with Halfords matt black and then hitting them with my air brush.

Im going to get all 6 done then do a consistant weathering with a toothbrush and airbrush.

Thanks for the reply.

Looking forward to more progress! I particularly like the shading on the finished tanks.

I think the results your achieving are very high caliber. Love seeing neglected models get some loving restoration and brought up to this level.

Are you using an airbrush to paint and shade them?

Nice work on the salvaged tanks, brother. The paintjobs will do them justice after the neglect they may have seen. Anyway, always a fan of reclaimation, as a practicer myself. Keep up the good work.

(I tend to use Fairy Power Spray for stripping my stuff these days. What's Flash like? Does it have a noticeable odour?)

Thanks guys

I tidied the techmarine up a bit as looking at the pictures I noticed some areas that needed touching up.

@Razblood: I hope not, but probably as thats how I tend to bid on things. I cant resist a bargin even though Ive got another 4 to finish. Ive done for a bit now so Ebay should be safe.

@Master Toddius: Thanks.Im spraying them regal blue then overspraying with ultramarine blue using a zential (sp) technique. What I then do is spray neat azurman blue where there should be a shadow. Im then doing to add highlights and damage with a brush. Im using a Iwata airbrush to get these results.

@Olisredan: Thanks. The smell of Flash is very strong when its in the box but this doesnt tend to stick to the stripped model for long. The only thing I have noticed is if you open the back of the rhino up you can just smell it as its in a closed space. I suppose it saves them having to have a magic tree air freshner :jaw:

Im cracking on with this one now and will get some pictures up in the next few days.

Beautiful. I haven't used an airbrush before, but seeing these I'm thinking I might need one when it gets to time to do up my tanks.

Have you put up any tutorials or airbrushing step by step, by any chance?

Either way, very inspirational.

Heres an update on my Vindicator

I had some spare time yesterday so after seeing this tutorial (which is great but in my opinion takes the weathering and chipping too far for an Ultra tank) I thought Id have a go at painting the dozer blade.

Link to video tutorial

Theres still a chunk of work to do regarding the final highlights but I think the stripes turned out really well (if I do say so myself)

Heres the group shot. Im waiting for some forgeworld doors before the 2nd Land Raider is completed

The armored column expands! You've inspired me further to reclaim some of these lost beauties off ebay. I'm particularly fond of that dozer blade on the Predator destructor, scratch-built?

Great work, keep it up! :tu:

Thanks

Its not scratch built its the Imperial Guard Dozer Blade. It sits further forward than the normal ones but it looks good.

Ive also got a forgeworld style dozer blade off ebay for one of my razorbacks but it needs a hell of a lot of cleaning up. Once its done Im going to stencil an imperial eagle onto it.... lets see how that turns out.

Ah, that's what it is.

Very cool idea for the upcoming dozer blade. Reminds me of the Chaos stars on Christian Dunn's(?) Black Legion Vindicators.

Nice work!

After reading this thread I went to ebay and looked for cheap ruined tanks, but found mostly older etition things. How do you search on ebay?

Thankyou in advance

Thanks

I normally search for "space marine tank" or "Space marine Rhino"

It takes a while but every now and then one comes up (there were 3 on last night which looked good)

The only ones to avoid are "glossy" ones where the owner has painted them with enamel paints
