Njal Stormcaller - *UPDATED 7/9*

Recommended Posts

These are a few early progress photos of a project I'm currently working on. I may sell the little guy after it's all said and done. I apologize in advance for the poor quality of the initial photos as they were taken with a cell phone. The finished project will likely be photographed more formally. Comments are welcome!

The photos here show his skin, as well as the early stages of his armor. (NOTE: The mane isn't finished; I merely used a coat of Dark Flesh to block out the borders of his face.)

Thanks for viewing, and be sure to check out my website for commissions!

that is some smooth painting ,brush or airbrush?

Brush. I don't own an airbrush, though I'm considering it for some zenithal effects as well as the speed with which I could finally paint my Tyranid army. ;)

Thanks all for the compliments. I will be posting more pictures periodically. I'm in a phase where I basically get 2-3 very specific days for painting, so as those days come, so will the photos. Thanks again!

With obvious blending skills like yours I don't think that you need an airbrush. Just use the money you would spend on one and buy more minis to paint. Problem solved.

Thank you. Again, it would probably just be to speed up the painting of an army, or for terrain pieces. But for single models, then yes, I will stick to the brush.

Sorry for the delays. Things have been hectic. Long and short of it, here's some updated photos. I've done some of the yellows, and I began work on the fur. The dead wolf still needs eyes, claws, some highlighting, and a nose, but you get the picture. I like the contrast.

Wow! Looking awesome. Just curious, are you using GW paints?

-kizzap

I am using some GW, and some Vallejo (both Game and Model Color ranges).

I tend to prefer the GW browns and Foundation paints for my shades and base coats, as well as the Shadow and Space Wolves Grey. For Turquoise and Ice effects I like the Vallejo line. For highlighting, I look for natural, warm colors instead of using white. The Model Color range is great for that.

I also like Coal Black from P3, but don't really have a place to use it on this guy.

But most of my paints are from GW, yes. After having tried them all for years, I just find that GW paints start thicker, and thus give me - the painter - the most flexibility when it comes to finding the consistency I want. The Vallejo dropper bottles are super convenient, however.

Sorry (again) for the delay (again). Timing has been weird. Anyway, here are some updates as to what I've been working on. I've started work on his forked beard, as well as the various stone/skull pieces around the miniature.

Enjoy!!

Beard (beginning):

The beard will become lighter and/or slightly less saturated by the end.

I'm also repainting the tabbard/pelt beneath his belt, as I wasn't satisfied with it. There's still some spots with no paint on them yet, as well as the WWE style belt (which I'm undecided on). Some details around the pistol, as well as a few claws and medallions also remain.

Thanks for your support and comments thus far!

WOW!!

I am amazed at the amount of top notch painters out there (at least from what I see on these here boards...), and you should consider yourself one of them Brassangel!!

...you know, I got a Njal that needs a little paint too.

I look forward to seeing more as this project goes on!!

I was gone for a while, and I never got a hold of a good camera, so this will be more of the same, low-quality images. It really doesn't do the model justice. Not to toot my own horn, but it looks good in person.

There are some runes on the base, which my phone camera couldn't snap without being a total blur. I carved them into my sculpted base. I was going to use some lava rock as a basis for Njal, but I couldn't find a shape I was pleased with, so I just built the scenery from scratch using Milliput for the mountain, and some slabs from a Gale Force 9 kit. Every color in the model itself was also used on the base.

I will go back and do some touch ups as I see fit. For now, I need to avert my eyes for a while and focus on another project before returning to Mr. Stormcaller.

I hope you enjoy, and a big thanks to those who followed the project!

That is some top notch painting my friend! I can tell if that was on a gaming table (If your using him in games that is) that your opponent would want to throw in the towel just because he's so awesomely painted. It would be the kind of model that I would notice on a table.

lol...Thank you, but I don't think he will end up on the gaming table for playing. I will likely sell the figure at the end of July, however, so what use he gets will be up to his new owner. :tu:
