Thousand Sons Rubric Terminators

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone, i dont usually post much but i thought that this topic might pique some interest; especially after i finally get the motivation and means to upload pictures of my progress. But first i must preface this thread with a wee bit of background:

I had started this project about 2-3 years ago once i had begun collecting my Thousand Sons army and i absolutely loved the fluff for them, especially the thought of Rubric Terminators. After seeing an old conversion piece, i knew that the base model would have to be Grey Knight Terminator bodies, only with added Tzeentch glyphs and an Egyptian flavor (as is the general theme of my entire Thousand Sons army). I had bought 9 Grey Knights Terminator Bodies and Tomb Kings Ushabti glaives (and an extra Thousand Sons squad) and set about converting. Being extremely frustrated with the myriad of metal models and bits, i hit several walls and the project was eventually put on an indefinite halt. Now with the release of the new plastic Grey Knights range, new life was breathed into my project, and i finally had my excuse to go back to work on them.

I began my project anew two nights ago and have already surpassed my previous, metal attempts.

I truly hate to write a whole essay and not even include any pictures with it, but just take it as a promise of pictures to come of my progress within the next night or so.

Thanks for reading my story and hopefully tagging along for my project!

Setting up a thread with no photos is just teasing.

....and just so it is known, i do have the storm bolter arms, however there is not really much to change/convert about them so i left those out of the pics

Hope you enjoyed this first batch, and i promise lots more to come, especially as this project progresses and i finally motivate myself to break out the green-stuff

Feel free to request additional pictures and close-ups (just keep in mind that the Aspiring Sorcerer leading the squad will probably be the last done due to the amount of green-stuff he will require)

Thanks for tagging along!

Looking like some cool conversions, but are you going to fill in the gaps above the loincloths with greenstuff or some other sculpting medium? They look a bit odd hanging there like that.

i actually made some green-stuff molds of the two torso styles of the regular metal Rubric Marines some time ago, and so i plan on using those over-sized belt emblems (in addition to chest icons) to hopefully cover up most of that gap.

I recently bought a box of GK Termis out of sheer *iz pretty i wantz* and I've been wondering how to actually use this models for my chaos army. Do you mind if I steal ypur idea? I have some rubic marine parts lying about I could finally use ^^

And I really like the metal glaives you made, they look as if they were cast that way. I'm definitely keeping an eye on this thread.

Armageddon must be near because its impossible that you're actually going to finish these things. I feel like its been more than 2-3 years since you started working on them.

sorry no pictures this time, ive hit my first wall of sorts in that my molds that i had created for the chest/belt icons didnt really work out as well as i had hoped so now i either have to make new molds, or go through the painstaking process of using my dremel to grind down each metal Thousand Sons chest piece, ugh. but anyway i can at least answer a few questions....

are you going to use the power armor heads for termies? or are you going to cut the decoration off and use it on termie helms?

i am planning on using the power armor heads as is, the reason is that i had previously attempted attaching both a regular and Grey Knight terminator helmet to the top part (decoration or whatever) of the Rubric Marine helmet and:

1. The regular terminator helmet didnt fit in the Grey Knight terminator torso, and looked very out of place

2.The Grey Knight terminator helmet looked too much like a Grey Knight (duh) with only like gluing the top decoration on top as an after-thought

Will you cover the wording on the armor?

I wanted to keep the wording on the armor to represent the etchings and sigils of the sorcerer who commands them; unfortunately i do recognize that the actual wording is very Loyalist/Grey Knight-esque and as of now there is nothing that i can think of to replace it.

Looking like some cool conversions, but are you going to fill in the gaps above the loincloths with greenstuff or some other sculpting medium? They look a bit odd hanging there like that.

after taking another look at the loincloths i do agree that they are hanging a little low and as such i will reposition them higher up on the thigh pauldrons on the legs.

i plan on getting back on track very soon, and with that will come pictures, i promise!

thanks again everyone

One idea I can think of is to cover the wording up with GS. Then when you paint them, free hand some runes like this and maybe symmetrical designs like pentagrams to show some kind of arcane, bonding ritual had been used.

So like I said, I jumped on your idea and I'm making a three man Rubric Termicide Squad. One problem I ran into is that, because of the way the helmets are made, I can' really fit them onto the torso in a mobile position, so they couldn't really turn their heads a lot.

Have you run into the same problem? I was thinking of adding some spacing between torso and helmet so they stick out a bit more, but I wanted to ask you first if you had some other thoughts on this?

My only thought is to take a sharp hobby knife and carve some of the shape of the letters off withing the engravings. As the words that are there make no sense, however with some minor work removing little bits of each letter could lead to individualized Runic etchings per suit. Other then that LOVE the work. Where did those halberds come from that your using btw?

When i did mine i chopped the wreath thing off, but they were chaos terminators.

Not sure if you can see from these pics.

Nice pictures from all concerned, but Master of Fact...can you tell me where you got those shoulder pads for your terminators from please?

This is what I would do, cover up the words with GS (using clayshapers to get it nice and flat), then freehand the runes in their place.

Nice looking Termies' so far. :)

ok im back, well to some capacity at least.

As far as the wordings etched into the armor, i will probably try and use my knife to carve them up a bit and make them more rune/sigil-like, im not going to go with the "green-stuff over and paint in the sigils" route because while i love to convert and model, im not much of a painter.

Anyway, while i am unable to continue my work on this project until the silicone putty for the chest icon molds arrive; i will however, satiate some of your thirst for pics with some other conversions of mine. Although i had converted these models a while ago, i just never posted pictures of them:

http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z359/mlech256/IMG_0285.jpg

My original Aspiring Sorcerer for this unit (you can tell by the metal); however i do really like this particular model so instead of scrapping him, ill probably just keep him as alternate Sorcerer Lord in Terminator Armor or whatever its called these days.... [its the Brother Captain Stern model as the base for anyone who didnt already recognize it]

http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z359/mlech256/IMG_0288.jpg

And next are my Thousand Sons Chosen Sorcerers. Now while these guys were legal (and awesome) in 4th, they are no longer playable in 5th edition; no matter, because i now just use them as Obliterators whose "spells" represent their multiple types of weapons [i know this is a commonly used practice and im not breaking any new ground with this thought process].

Chosen Sorcerer 1 (i plan on modeling some green-stuff flames onto the skull in his hand)

http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z359/mlech256/IMG_0293.jpg

Chosen Sorcerer 2

http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z359/mlech256/IMG_0295.jpg

http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z359/mlech256/IMG_0299.jpg

http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z359/mlech256/IMG_0296.jpg

Chosen Sorcerer 3 (in his open palm will be a floating sphere [connected to his palm with some sort of green-stuff flame thing]

http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z359/mlech256/IMG_0304.jpg

http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z359/mlech256/IMG_0305.jpg

http://i1185.photobucket.com/albums/z359/mlech256/IMG_0301.jpg

In addition, all of the Chosen Sorcerers will get that scroll tabard thing that can be seen on my metal Terminator Aspiring Sorcerer [brother Captain Stern] model, it is the one originally found on the metal Aspiring Sorcerer in the Thousand Sons boxed set. This is of course in addition to more Egyptian and Tzeentch icons and other goodies...

Hope this will satisfy you until i can get back to work on my Rubric Terminators...

Well, the plastic sorcerors are more kitbashs than conversions, but they look great.

I really like weaponless Marine miniatures. We mostly see them with gun/pistol in one and melee weapon in the other hand, so it's refreshing to see these Sorcerors relying on their awesome warp powers ^^

Stern is more of a conversion. It was a bit hard to see what you modified because it's metal on metal, but now I see what you did there. However, now that we have the Sang Guard and Grey Knight Terminator open hands, I would swap the Rocket Launcher hand for one of those, as they look more realistic.
