According to the rules (pg. 48) Independant Chacters can join and leave squads by moving into and out of coherency with them. Could someone point to the page where it says units can join or leave an IC? If not, then an IC can't "hang out" in a vehicle when the unit disembarks, he would have to get out at the same time, move out of coherency, and then re-embark the vehicle (which he can't till next turn).

BRB Pg. 67 ICs embarking and disembarking

"They can also disembark seperately by either the unit or the character ddisembarking while the others remain onboard,..."

There is no problem with the unit leaving the IC.

Don't picture it as "who is joining". The IC rules are pretty clear on this. If at the end of the Movement phase, the IC is within 2" of a unit that it can join, it's joined. If it's within 2" of more than one unit, you must declare which unit it has joined. So it doesn't matter which order you move the units in...IC first, infantry first, doesn't matter.

Why would it be any different in the case of them being embarked? (Answer: it wouldn't. <3)

As Seattle DV8 says, the transport section of the rules deals with all of this. ICs can get out at the same time and with the squad they were embarked with. Or they can get out at the same time but separately. Or the IC can get out on his own, or stay in on his own, leaving the squad. All perfectly legal.
