[Commission] (Custom Chapter) Sanguinary Phalanx HQ

Recommended Posts

It's metallic. Mostly.

The progression is:

Scorched Brown,

VMC Bronze

Devlan Mud wash

VMC Black horizon blend to VMC Leather Brown blend to VMC Old Gold blend to VMC Silver/VMC Old Gold mix. Extreme higlights with VMC Silver.

Work back from the horizon, VMC Silver, Old Gold, Bronze, Bronze + Leather Brown but blend in specular highlight at this point.

Reads harder than it is to do.

Edit: Check post #61 in this thread.

Moving on with the honour guard, here's a first take. This guy will eventually be the equivalent of a company champion. I'll probably swap the shield out for a bigger one and use this to make the rest with a press mould.

This guy's pretty much built. The wings are attached to the JP rather than the back, same as the Chapter Master. Will help with painting (the JP/wings are just tacked on):

And the Sanguinary Novitiate (Apothecary) - just his spear to finish off:

I may remove the decoration from the discs on the left shoulders and paint the chapter icon there instead... not sure yet.

Bit more progress. May redo the counterweight on the Apothecary's spear. It's a bit messy.

Conversion work's pretty much done. Some chopped up sprue rubble and gritted sand will go on the bases later tonight. Should be set to prime and start painting tomorrow.

That is a wonderfully characterful squad, each Marine tells a story that combine (like Voltron!) to form a bigger story. Wonderful :D

I've done some extra work as this job was delayed by previous bookings overrunning, and the client had paid in full in advance.

If I were to take a fresh booking to repeat this job, It'd be along the following lines:

Chapter Master (competition standard) - £200 (£25 assembly / conversion, £175 paint)

Honour Guard (tabletop character standard) - 5x £75 = £375 (£25 assembly / conversion, £50 paint)

Parts cost (2 Sanguinary Guard sets, write off the astorath and other bits, I keep excess bits) = £41

So a total of around £616, plus postage and paypal fees etc which should (providing the shipment isn't to be insured for the full value) make the total outlay for the client just under £650. Model cost plus 10% deposit in advance, remainder on satisfactory photos for completion.

Basic candy coat done, this is pretty much what the finished tone will be. There'll be a layer of gloss over the top of it though.

That is... a fair wad of cash, I must say. But you get what you pay for. Sterling work, brother. :P

Considering the Master took around 35 hours, and the others are looking to be about 12-15 hours each, it's still under minimum wage. For the standard though, it's about what the market dictates. Not a game to get into if you're looking to get rich. :-)
