Justcar
I have been painting minis for ~ 3 years and have never had issues with spray paint before. Recently I tried to prime my grey knights with a brand new can of primer. It came out fuzzy. The paint has clumped up and has a grainy/rough texture. Some of it won't stick to the mini either, like it was covered in flower! I have no idea what has gone wrong! If you have any idea or have experienced this as well, please help!! Thank you, D Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/231032-need-immediate-help/ Share on other sites

Thank you, D Off the top it sounds like one of 3 things but it's hard to tell without knowing the paint type, manufacture, and enviromental conditions. First cause I look at is enviromental. Humidity and/or high temperatures will cause sprays to do as you observed. With high humidity giving a more pebbled texture and is caused by the spray mist condensing with moisture in the air before hitting the surface, and high temperature will cause the spray to partially dry in the air before reaching the surface and leaving a graining/sandy texture with some powdery areas. It can be a bad can of paint, wich can mean the paint it's self is bad or there are issues with the actuall spray assembly/propellant inside the can, or the spray head it's self. I don't pitch a can untill I rule out the first and last cuases though. Last cause is all operator error and comes from just being to far away based on the enviromental conditions or just plain not shaking it enough(like my pappy always says,"shake it itll you think it's good then shake it that much longer!"). I screw up with this occasionaly myself. Since by your location being GA I'm going to guess you have a combination of high temp/humidity and operator error. To correct, try brushing the mini's with a stiff tooth brush to remove the grit, sometimes it works and sometime not, you have to decide at this point whether they're good to go, you need to strip them, or they need to be re-primed. The next time you prime try to do it when the trmperature is lower, I aim for 75 to 85 myself, and with as low of humidity as you can. If you're lower temperatures at the times you can spray are above 85 you can still spray if you remember to spray a bit closer to normal and use quicker lighter coats. There's no hard and fast distance, you'll have to learn as you go. Try a test with the can that gave you problems using these tips on some sprue or an old junk test mini and see how it goes. If you still get a gritty finish try another can at this point.
