Spray primer recommendations please

Recommended Posts

I've just been monkeying around with Vallejo paints, and I've found their Game Colour white primer to be quite good (brushes on easily, seems quite tough). They also do grey primer in 17/60/200ml bottles, which they show being sprayed on with an airbrush.

Not sure if that's any help or not

halfords grey primer is the best primer ive used, if you dont want grey they do a black spray paint too which is meant to be good. but to me, primer means actual primer.

It's primer I'm looking for and in grey as I'm doing space wolves. Will check out my local halfords.

I've always used the GW black primer, but it's getting rather expensive. So i have a couple of questions. Why do people prime grey instead of black? i'm just curious, because with a black undercoat blacklining is very easy, and i can imagine it being harder on a grey prime. So i am just curious to what the reason is.

grey gives you a good base for lighter colours without having the issue of whites ott vibrance. if you want to deal with black lining, black wash before doing base colours, gives you darkened recesses (and in the case of power armour shaded/highlighted soft armour) before painting your main colours on. essentially its the best of both worlds.

one of the main advantages over black spray paint like gw's is that grey primer is actually a primer, its made to be painted over it will hold other colours better because thats what its made to do..

hell even my templars are now primed grey before seeing a nice thin coat of airbrushed on black. (because i havent found a true black primer)

The spray undercoats I've used:

1) GW Chaos Black. Nice fine spray, works reasonably well. Good base for zenithal workup jobs with the airbrush. Takes a couple of coats, requires the minis be cleaned before.

2) Halfords Black Acrylic spray. A bit cheaper than the above, same sort of paint, but spray is not so diffuse. Tend to use this for terrain pieces.

3) Plasticote Black Primer. Cheaper still, a bit sticky when dried. Good for terrain, bit too thick for minis.

4) Halfords Grey Plastic Primer. Pretty nice grey primer. Not too dear.

5) Tamiya fine grey primer. Super expensive. Super smooth. Generally for lighter coloured display pieces.

6) GW Skull White. Another acrylic spray paint, rather than a true primer. Fine white spray when shaken up enough.

The Vallejo one I mentioned above is available in black, and advertised as a true primer. :jaw: Approx £10 from Maelstrom Games for a 200ml bottle (it's not a spray can).

ive tried the vallejo grey before.. it smelt funny and im pretty sure its taken several years off my life, but ill look into it.

Oh, that's not so good then! Haven't used their polyurethane primer, but I've used their Game Colour white primer (equivalent of the old GW "Smelly Primer") and haven't had problems.

used to love the old smelly primer. Was great for when you used a black undercoat but wanted to use a light colour over it.

Think I may have to visit halfords. 500ml grey spray for £8. May work well on my space wolves.

Many thanks.
