Bismarxist
Hello everyone right now I am building a terminator heavy army but I can't decide on an hq (although draigo is out for sure since I find special characters boring and flat) I'm leaning towards running with a Librarian but he just seems too fragile to survive on the front lines with only 2 wounds and to iron halo. Also what are your thoughts on powers and equipment? Right now i have him carrying a master crafted halberd level 3 upgrade Shrouding Quicksilver Might of Titan Sanctuary Dark Excommunication and psybolts. The rest of the army is 2-4 squads of terminators with swords/halberds/hammers and bodyguard of paladins. skarn
I use a Librarian with a staff to keep him alive in CC, and use him to buff surrounding GK squads and shroud vehicles. Even Strike squads are pretty tough when they are I10 and Str6. Bismarxist
I've thought giving him a staff to help with his close combat survival but I am more worried about PoW from the volume of powers that he is going to be casting. So do you limit the number of powers you cast to try to mitigate that risk or do you always drop all of your powers a turn? Also do you run him at lvl 2 or lvl 3? Angelis Mortis
If you can spare the points, attach him to a couple Paladins w/Apothecary. Thats what they are there for. Bismarxist
Perhaps I wasn't as clear as I could have been but my main worry with a Librarian is that with only 2 wounds and only a 5++ casting 3 powers a turn raises the threat of a PoW blowing him up. So what I keep thinking is that with the number of points that i am already spending on him I could buy I a grandmaster, get a much heavier sledgehammer unit, grand strategy, and be much more resilient against PoW at the cost of the psychic powers and hood. Any thoughts? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/231126-librarian-questions/#findComment-2779643 Share on other sites
nurglez
well, I find that mastery level 2 is enough, as I generally dont need to cast more then 2 powers a turn. I've played with a libby twice, both times at 2000 points, first game libby helped provide cover and sanctuary helped kill a few charging zerkers, then he died to kharne, oops. second game he won me the game, helping draigo's squad to take out 6 killer kans and 2 ork dreads thanks to might, and provide cover with shrouding. I didn't suffer due to perils of the warp in either of those games either. I run my libby with a halberd, 3 servo skulls and might, quickening, sanctuary, shrouding and rift, but will only take him in 2000 point games :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/231126-librarian-questions/#findComment-2779676 Share on other sites
worloch
One of the reasons I like the new Codex is that I believe all our HQ's have something to bring to the table (except the Brother-Captain lags a bit). PoW is definitely something that plagues our army, and the Libby doesn't have much protection against it unfortunately. In my mind, that doesn't mean we avoid him, but rather that we know he is a calculated risk. One way to mitigate that risk is to avoid overloading on him. My suggestion to you would be to keep him in, because his powers are pretty awesome, but scale back a bit. Lose the psychic mastery level 3 upgrade and drop the Psybolt Ammo. Unless you're planning on facing Demons a lot, I'd also recommend dropping Dark Excommunication. If you plan on getting him in to CC on a regular basis, I'd drop the Halberd and take a Warding Stave. A 2++ in CC goes a long way towards discouraging attacks leveled at him in the first place. It's true he won't hit nearly as hard as a GrandMaster would, but he can enhance your squads much further. Using Quicksilver on Termie's with Force Swords means you get In 10 (probably going first) and the 4++ in CC. Might stacks with Hammerhand, which can take a squad from St 4 to St 6 which is much more frightening to many opponents, and can cross the threshold on Vehicles. Shrouding and Sanctuary give you some durability that our expensive units sorely need. Bismarxist
Thanks for all the help and advice everyone. I'll probably just keep with a halberd because I made a rather simple, yet elegant conversion that I am rather pleased with (I took one of the old school captains gave plastic arms and replaced the head/skull top of one of the new staffs with a tomb kings curvy bladed sword) but I'll still run a few test games with him to get the fine tuning down. Also here is the list(s) that I am currently planning. http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...howtopic=231150 Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/231126-librarian-questions/#findComment-2779716 Share on other sites
templargdt
I would stick with the Librarian. Also, I wouldn't worry about blowing yourself up with a perils. It's a 1/18 chance per casting and you do have a (low) chance of saving it with your Terminator armor. That said, I personally wouldn't take Mastery 3, two powers a turn seems plenty, at least in my games so far. Halberd on the Libby seems like a great choice to me. I run my Librarian in a Terminator squad with 4 halberds and a hammer. Works like a champ. A Librarian with Halberd and four powers seems like a great chioce to me and, honestly, one of the best things about the librarian is the hood, and it's free. Unless I was going to go super cheap and take an Inquisitor for my HQ, a Librarian is my default HQ choice. Doomaflatchi
My problems with Librarian survivability come not from Perils, but from the fact that he's an IC, and can be singled out in close combat. So, to prevent this, I give him a Warding Stave. Also, I never take the Level 3 upgrade - our powers are split up so nicely between ones cast on our turn and ones cast on the opponent's turn that I almost never find myself wishing I could cast a third power on a single turn; as such, the upgrade just isn't worth the points to me. Still, feel free to play around with it. No amount of Mathammer will ever trump what you find that works for you! :cuss Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/231126-librarian-questions/#findComment-2780411 Share on other sites
