Deathwatch armor question

Recommended Posts

If memory serves, and i could be wrong here literally working by half-asleep memory, I think the armour becomes black, no chapter-oriented symbology apart from on one shoulder pad, and with the Inquisition's I on the other. One could take this to mean they remove ALL the chapter symbology including the wolf pelts and drops, or one could take it to mean the marine is a sentimental sort and keeps them but paints them black in all feasable cases. Out of the two the former is more likely in my honest opinion.

The Deathwatch books show members of various chapters throughout, and they seem to keep all the various fetishes/trophies/furs/whatever they had before.

It is only chapter and company markings that are painted over, with the shoulder pad left original colours to honour the machine spirit of the armour.

Im currently putting together a deathwatch army and have done a lot of rerading to asnwer questions simalar to your, from what I have gathered:-

When a space marine joins the deathguard, his armour is painted black and his left pauldren is removed and replaced with a silver pauldren that displays the deathwatch chapter insgnia and his left arm is also coated in silver. However each marine is allowed to keep charms and icons from his home chapter, for instance space wolves keep thier stone runes atached to thier armour, Dark angles are allowed to wear thier robes etc.

When based on a watch fortress each marine is also allowed to maintain a shrine within his chambers, a blood angle for instance may have a small statue of sanguinius and a golden goblet. Battle brothers are also allowed to wield the weapons they use when fighting for thier chapter. However such are the reascources available to the deathwatch that most prefer to use the weapons that are provided for them as they are superior in construction even to those granted to a tradtion codex astartes chapter.

So you could model some of your sternguard using the plastic boltonguns from say the dark angles or space wolves frame and other using the more spoecailised botler from the Deathwatch conversion set. This is what I have done with my deathwatch.

Hope thats of use, if you have anyy more questions drom me an email.

Mastermonkey is correct. The original index astartes article also depicted a spacewolf deathwatch marine with pelts etc. I have had an ongoing project like that as well and have been keeping small signs of chapter allegiance. I try not to overpower the deathwatch theme too much personally. A bit or two per model depending on its size is appropriate in my opinion. Whenever, I use a helmeted head though, I always use the metal deathwatch one.

Hope this helps and have fun!

Edit: corection for accuracy.

I stand corrected and just checked. The IA article did not have space wolf pelts, just weapons and messy space wolf hair on the head. However, the deathwatch role playing book does have pelts on their marines.

Para-phrased from the Deathwatch RPG book

"Upon joining the ranks of the deathwatch the battle brother enacts a ritual in which his armour is repainted black. Not all the armour is repainted however for the right shoulder is left in its original colour so the brother’s parent chapter may be known and not to invite its ire at a critical moment in battle.

On the warriors left shoulder the plate is electroplated silver and polished to a bright shine. At the centre is placed the icon o of the deathwatch the stylised =I= of the inquisition mounted with a deaths head and crossed bones. Around the icon various devotional texts are engraved including the catechisms of the xenos and the third abjuration of terra.

Aside from this the amour is usual decorated with purity seals, holy icons and trapping of the brother’s original chapter.

When a space marine joins the deathguard, his armour is painted black and his left pauldren is removed and replaced with a silver pauldren that displays the deathwatch chapter insgnia and his left arm is also coated in silver.
