A few questions on ravenwing paint scheme....

So, I discovered a unit of space marine bikes in my desk droor that I forgot about, I also found a bunch of the ravenwing backbanners from the kislevite project that my cousin and i worked on a few years ago. So I decided to paint up a ravenwing unit (which may turn into a full dark angels army.... hopefully).

Now, I don't have a DA codex ( in fact, none of the stores around here do either, apparently it doesn't sell)and couldn't find any clear pictures online of what the ravenwing have on their right shoulder pads. Is it a stylised "X" like codex marine assault squad based bikers or do they have something special?

Also, I painted the armor black, the shoulderpads and helmet in darker than dark angels green and the trim, bolter casing and aquilla in bone, is there anything wrong with that? I always like to make my armies just a bit different from the codex paint scheme, but with enough of the original paint scheme to make it look right as whatever army I am painting.

Finally, should my speeders have back banners? just for reference, I am using the old metal ravenwing flying couches.

BTW, I have never painted space marine bikes before and have found them very fun to paint and am enjoying the hell out of it. This post may soon become my WIP blog for my dark angels. I have also found an extra tacsquad and razorback that I am turning greenwing, can dark angels take the 6 man squad with a special weapon? or do I have to be 10 strong like codex marines?

Welcome to the Dangles, look around on 2nd hand sites for the dex, or order it from GW so you can really get involved in the unforgiven.

My RW bikers have a white squad number on a black pad no special markings needed for them, I think that is fairly standard.

Flying couches can have banners if you want, the new speeders come with a couple of icons etc but no banners, an old speeder might look wicked all RT'd up :)

Alas no 6 man tac squad for us, it's 5 or 10. On the bright side the 5 man squad can have a Sgt and a special weapon trooper, lets you attach a IC to ride along in the RB. Alas poor 3rd Ed, I knew him well...

a old scholl land speeder with the feather banner would look something like this http://www.ironhands.com/mrg_lsped.jpg

Here is a blown up version of GW's Ravenwing biker box, and they did something on the other shoulder http://dmrp-games.co.uk/images/GW40K/44-14.jpg

as to the lack of a DA codex, i'm not at all surprised considering how poorly it was thought out, and the zero playtesting involved.

Ravenwing generally use the winged fist clutching a forward canted sword (Ravenwing company icon) on the left shoulder pad and the squadron number (or possibly squadron markings, if you want to use those) on the right pad.

Post up some pictures of those bikes! (Sadly, I screwed up my priming and base coating and ended up with some popped air bubbles, so it is back to stripping them again) Your paint scheme sounds like it will look interesting.

For the speeders, mock up a test with some blu-tac and see if you like it. I've seen some speeders with the RW flags that look very good, and a couple that have been sort of silly.

Five man DA squads can take a special weapon, however, you can only take them in five man and ten man squad set ups, so no six man squads. Ten squad members can take a heavy weapon at that point.

Nostagic much?

Stobz wanders off wondering where his three got lost to....

Beaut yet hideous old model exsulis

BTW, I think the cover art is using 'mirror' image bikers, the RW pads only face forward properly on the left shoulder.

Haha, I bitz built mine a long long time ago. They used to have the bitz in the old collector's section but alass they cleaned that out.

Yep, shame about that, GW used to be the goto place for bits, now I s'pose it's the interwebz we must look

You might have better luck with ebay, and someone getting rid of an old army. next best thing is some brink, or mortors have a damaged goods bin that may have them as well.

fyi not my ebay page

++ Removed direct link ebay selling item. Folks can use the search function whilst on ebay. B&C doesn't exist to promote stuff being sold, no matter whose it is ++

YEah, I like my old flying couches for the speeders that are attached to the RW bike squads. I think I will use regular speeders for the actual speeder squadrons. I just don't want to try and find old landspeeders on ebay and I have three of the old ones, so enough for as many RW squads I will have.

Thanks for all of the responses guys.

@Brian Blaire:

I will post some pics of my bikes, but not tonight. I am far to tired to deal with the long process of transfering pics from my camera to my laptop (I need to get a camera that is more user friendly than mine). Hopefully after I get the pics up I can receive better advice because you guys will know what you are working with.
