Recommended Posts

Hello,

I a am Maj Tom and I hope to detail step by step the process of paining and building my army with you. I am looking for C&C but obviously nothing like "you are teh suck and should die", but something constructive. I hope you enjoy!

Chapter Master (1st Commander) Kodai Nazar 23rd Head of the Council of Admirals.

Let me know what you think of these pics, also a little for shadowing for my upcoming IA on these guys.

You are teh suck and your pictures are too small to adequately gauge your level of teh suck.

I joke, of course. I like the pose on your captain. What chapter are they? They look similar to astral claws but that is grey or beige armour?

They are codex grey with mordian blue trim. I call them the Fists of Hate since I was trying to think of a good Fist (you know good IF successor) related name so it is a working title. I did like the Astral Claw's scheme so I kind of started there and played with colors until I found the before mentioned colors. The commander is also supposed to be my rendition of Pedro Kantor since he is a pretty incredible buffing chapter master stubborn and scoring sternguard! What more could you want? I did take those pics with my camera phone, which look good on my phone... but lowsy on the forum. I am trying to get my real camera to take clearer pictures but have failed . There will be clearer pictures and bigger ones!

My first real update. Managed to do sme painting as well as get some more customized sternguard put together. As for the painting part I finished up on my commander and the dread naught, I also painted an assault terminator, and two sternguards (the new resin ones) I hope you enjoy. C&C welcome as always.

Okay, so you asked for C&C. Rather than just say "Good work keep it up" for fear of offending you, C&C is what you're going to get. Put your hard-hat on if you like.

I can't quite work out if your models are finished or not. If they are, they don't look like it. Sorry. Let's start off with your Kantor:

http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm210/CarreraV/Kantor-2.jpg

- In a few places, it's clear that the paint hasn't actually covered the area you're trying to colour. The most obvious place is the banner, where there are still black spots where there should be blue. Other areas where you have this problem are: the backpack, shoulder pads, leg armour, chest, and so on.

- This could be because you're trying to 'shade' the area by leaving it black, rather than actually shading it. Sadly this just leaves the model looking a little messy. I would suggest covering all these gaps first with the basecoat colour, then going back and shading them with the appropriate wash. The gold eagle heads on the backpack for example, should be painted completely with the gold colour, washed with either Gryphonne Sepia or Devlan Mud, then you go over the main blocks again with the gold. It's a relatively simple technique which yields rather good results, and with a bit of practice I don't think you would have any problems pulling it off.

- Good silver is easy to do. Boltgun Metal > Badab Black Wash all over > Highlight edges with Mithril Silver or Chainmail.

- A simple trick to making gold look shiny and really 'pop' is to do very thin line highlights of silver right on the edges. For example, the tips of the feathers behind the eagle heads, the top edge of the beak, the brow, etc.

- Actually painting the black areas black, rather than just leaving the spray undercoat, would improve the appearance. If you wanted to go a step further, use Adeptus Battlegrey or Codex Grey and highlight the edges. This would really improve the look of your Power Fist, giving it some added definition.

- Your conversion skills are actually pretty good, your mixed-armour Sternguard look great, but sadly your messy painting detracts from the overall feel of the model. Overall, the issue isn't really with your lack of highlights. A model doesn't have to use fancy highlighting and shading techniques to look good and in fact, if you're new at painting it's probably best to leave this for now. But it's crucial to practice clean and consistent colours in order to improve.

Hopefully that helps. I don't mean to bash your models, just want to be honest.

Didn't come off as a bash at all. I am new to painting and I will take your tips and work them into my models. The modeling part has always come much easier then the painting part, thank you Ravendove.

Something you might also want to consider is thinning down your paint a little with water, if you don't already. It helps the paint flow into cracks and give a much more even coat. Generally, painting two thinner coats instead of one thicker coat produces a cleaner and more consistent look.

Everyone is new to painting models at some time and you're certainly off to a good start, don't get me wrong. But those are just areas you might want to work on should you want to improve. All it takes is patience and practice.

:D
