Looking to start a Daemon Army

Recommended Posts

I've been getting bored of playing my Wolves and Marines and I want to play an non power armour army, and in an effort to kill two birds with one stone I was thinking Daemons for the new army. I've been meaning to get into Fantasy anyways so that is a boon, and if I play a CSM any time I have the daemons for it, so that is 3 useful applications for this.

So here is my question, I have NO daemons and want to start collecting, so what is the cheapest way to gather a Khorne (Yes, I'm certain on Khorne, because Khorne is the only god worth his salt in my book) Daemon army for both Fantasy and 40k?

I'm not talking about the methods of acquisition, I'm thinking Model Wise.

However, if you know of any models that are really similar and are cheap still, I'm more than open to hear about it.

Thanks for reading and for the advice.

Well there is really only 1 mono-Khorne army that I think is competitive and that's a foundation of 2x Bloodthirsters supported by 3x Soulgrinders filled in with Bloodletters and Bloodcrushers.

The Bloodthirsters are a no-brainer because they represent the majority of your heavy anti-tank and because Khorne heralds aren't that impressive when you compare them to the basic troops and/or elites.

I went with Soulgrinders over Daemon Princes because they offer you some ranged firepower, which your army is lacking, and Khorne DPs are rather lackluster. Take phlegm over tongue because its better with the BS3.

If you want to be using them for fantasy as well, some Lord of the Rings movement trays would be useful.

With Khorne, all you really have to play with are Bloodletters, Bloodcrushers, Bloodthirsters, Flesh Hounds and Soul Grinders. Of these, Flesh Hounds are always going to be the least useful, if you do go for them I'd recomend you make sure to use Karanak.

2 Bloodthirsters, every time. This should be fairly obvious. Consider making one of them Skarbrand, and buying all the upgrades for the other. 600 pts sorted. If you like converting or want to give it a go, I'd always suggest converting a Balrog for a Bloodthirster, the model is the same price but in plastic. I converted one into Angron and I think it works really well.

Bloodcrushers are just too cool not to get. Soul Grinders give you much needed firepower. Bloodletters... eh, just get two lots to fill the comoulsory troop choices as far as I'm concerned. Skulltaker and Herald of Khorne aren't bad, but you need those slots for Bloodthirsters. I'd say Skulltaker/Herald should only be taken in Apocalypse armies. Of course, Skulltaker looks awesome and would make a fine champion for a unit of Bloodletters.

I appreciate the replies, but I realized that a beggar cannot be a chooser, so I'll rephrase

What is the cheapest way to start a Dual-Game Fantasy army. I would prefer not to have any Slaneesh in my army, but I'll take what I can.

Also, I was just going to model them on a square base, as most 90% of all gamers are fine with it

Just to be clear, you're talking cheapest as in terms of money?

If so, I would nix my previous advice and take 3 Daemon Princes. Turn them into the uber Nurgle DPs (iron hide, wings, cloud, touch) so they each cost you 200+ points. I can only speak to the 40k army but I'm sure that fantasy daemons still has the option for a nurgle daemon prince.

Then you're going to use plaguebearers and bloodletters, the first for holding objective and the second for taking them.

I don't have a clue about the Fantasy rules, but I repeat that in 40K 2 Bloodthirsters can fill up 600pts, either maxed-out (which is all GOOD, not just points for the sake of points) or one as Skarbrand. Forget the Soul Grinder if you want cost-efficient, you can't use it in fantasy.

Working on a 1750 Point Army List:

HQ

2x Bloodthirster (600pts)

  1. Skarbrand
  2. Death Strike, Unholy Might, Instrument of Chaos, Blessing of the Blood God

Troops

3x 10 Bloodletters (600pts)

  1. Fury of Khorne, Chaos Icon, Instrument of Chaos
  2. Fury of Khorne, Chaos Icon, Instrument of Chaos
  3. Fury of Khorne, Chaos Icon, Instrument of Chaos

Elites

2x 3 Bloodcrushers (270)

  1. Fury of Khorne, Instrument of Chaos
  2. Fury of Khorne, Instrument of Chaos

Heavy Support

1x Daemon Prince (240pts)

  1. Daemonic Flight, Iron Hide, Instrument of Chaos, Unholy Might, Mark of Khorne, Blessing of the Blood God, Death Strike

With 40 Points left over. That's just a quick Khornate list, so it'll almost certainly need fine-tuning, and I'm not sure how it would work out in Fantasy. That's £213.50 RRP, £198 if you get a second Daemon Prince to be Skarbrand. If you wanna just be super cheap then maxed out Bloodletters can give you 240 pts per box if you split into 2 squads, making it doable for about £160 with a Bloodthirster HQ, but I wouldn't recomend.

It’s not easy to get a 40k and WHF army to fit together for cheep.

If you take a lot of 40k MC hq’s and heavy’s, they wont fit in the WHF army because of the limited points in the lords (hq) slot. So a 2k list is limited to just a thirstier and a few cheep heralds.

I’d recommend a base army of

Thirstier (awesome in both games)

40 letters (awesome in both games)

6 crushers (awesome in both games)

8 hounds + Karanak (awesome in WHF)

2 DP’s (for 40k)

That will get you 1850'ish in both games. I’d defiantly start out small and proxi play till you know if daemons are for you.

Mono Khorne lacks magic defiance which may make playing WHF frustrating. I’ve found a good army in one tends to fails in another. To play effectively, I’ve amassed about 5k points in multi god daemons to play both games.

I find twin soul grinders are really healpful in a mono khorne army, as are blood thirsters and blood crushers and lots of bloodletters.

Flesh hounds are great (not sure how they work with the new codex) against grey knights for their 2+ Inv against force weapons, it really slows them down

Hounds with Karanak and blood crushers are good in fantasy and i've had soem luck with Skulltaker there aswell.

you do lack magic defense and i like to take great standard of sundering on a herald for this to disrupt their magic.

I have been playing daemons for a while now. I do not know why but I never thought to bring 2 bloodthirsters. Stinky little Tzeentch heralds clouded my vision. I made an account and logged in just so I could say that you have sparked the awesomeness of tabletop back into me. For the first time in +8 months I am going to go to the LGS and lay down some big scary models!

Don't model them on square bases. Model them on warhammer 40k circular bases, then, using an official wfb square base as a template, construct another base which is square and has a hole in it that is large enough to nest the w40k circular base, this modular basing is very popular amonst wfb-w40k demon players since it allows them to play anyone(including the nitpickers) with their demon army, also allows u to do competetive play with them.
