Road to the Demons

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, thought I'd make a little thread here to update as I work on stuff for Chicago's Golden Demons this year. The first piece is just a practice piece for a competition on the 25th of June using the new Finecast line.

So far it's just the base, I've put about two hours into the mock up and began laying in the pieces. Once I get more glue and Milliput tomorrow I'll continue building up the base.

Sorry the pictures are a little bland, but it's just a base!

There will be a lot more stone work and sculpting once most the pieces are laid in.

I was thinking of converting the Ultramarine into another chapter, so I'm taking suggestions on what he should be. Let me know what you guys think.

Any input in thoughts to the project would be much appreciated, or thoughts on the display base.

im sure you will do the model justice regardless but i have to question why you would change the model to a non ultra chapter.. the banner itself contains the symbols and images of the many systems of ultramar, aswell as many other chapter specific emblems..

i suppose you could maybe turn it into a blood angel becuase the image of guilliman has wings, but failing that without some serious GS work it wouldnt look right for a non ultras banner bearer to carry the ultramarines chapter banner

The work to convert it is not a problem for me. The new finecast resin is really easy to convert and file off emblems and stuff. ;)

I don't mind doing an Ultramarine, I'm just looking for suggestions on non ultramarine chapters as well :)

were it not a golden daemon id say change it for sure, most independants dont value the ultramarines as Gw does..

with the winged primarch i think blood angels are a solid second choice

Just an update, tonight I got the base ready for sanding and cleaning. A dirt will be added here and there before it is primed. Majority of the vegetation will come after it is painted in the form of leaves and grass.

But so far only 4 hours in. I put the model on the base to give an idea of the concept. And then another picture next to it to show just how much larger the base is!

This picture is just the back of the base to show how much is truly built up.

I'd love to hear input from you guys, I'm taking tomorrow off to go see my Texas Rangers, but I should have it primed Thursday night!

You could try doing Ancient Galatian, if I remember that paragraph from C:SM 4th ed. correctly, at the Breach of Korinth(?) where he lost his arm, then eventually died, but never let the banner fall. You just have to green stuff the arm to look like it was hacked off.

The fluff behind the battle was he was one of the few marines remaining at the gate, if I did it, I'd have to do it right with mounds of dead Ultramarines. Which would make me happy as I am not much of an Ultramarine person.

I also want to recreate the old 3rd Ed. Marine codex cover if I remember correctly.

Oh, I always thought of him being the lone marine on a high cliff, separated from his dead/dying brothers by the tides of combat, desperately holding off the enemy from getting through. I'm basing this on the bit of artwork that was on the same page as the paragraph I reference, where there are a bunch of marines moving forward to man defensive positions while he stands there and looks suitably inspiring.

Alright guys, sorry to keep you waiting. He is going to be an Ultramarine I decided.

I got the base primed tonight added some details and began the marine. The bad picture will be replaced soon with good ones once my camera starts working, but this is he standing as of tonight. With exactly 2 weeks till the deadline, as well as an armies on parade competition. I am doing a Sons of Orar army I think. I'm so torn on what to do for it! :HQ:

Anyway, enough chat, here is the picture.

I only put about 45 minutes of work into the blue, still lots to go plus weathering. But it's a start!

C&C much appreciated!

Thanks guys.

Boomsly: I've been in the hobby since '97. It just takes a lot of practice and knowing where you want your light source. I built up a nice even base coat using Regal Blue and began mixing in Hawk turquoise for the highlights. The final light is pure white. I then when back into the shadows with mixes of Hawk Turquoise and Regal, pure Regal, and Asurman Blue and Leviathan Purple washes.

I don't paint Ultramarines very often and wanted a different colour from the RaF Ultramarines you see every day. Hope that helps! :P

I'm about to head to the shop to get some more work done. I also primed a Land Raider last night to work on.

Well the base is almost ready for water effects/resin. I got it painted today, I'm pretty happy with it right now, and am pretty happy with the model in general. Still a long way to go before it's finished!

I'll be taking better pictures when my camera is charged and even better ones when it is all finished! :)

Let me know what you all think!

Nice work, very cool.

Gotta say the rats feel out of place for me, though. If you're wanting critters, i think scorpions/lizards/snakes would look better on that desert base.

Dry skulls in a dusty valley, with all the tops sawn off.
