What options do we have to write or own fluff

quite a fex actually

first there are the lost companies. these are great companies who's wolf lord decided to recant his oath to the current great wolf but not to say. instead of falling in line for the new great wolf this company takes of with their own fleet, armour etc and goes on their own personall crusade.

second, a wolf lord predating the current wolf lords. as far as i'm aware it's only mentioned of a couple companies who was their previous wolf lord. and even then you can choose to represent the wolf lord before that one. personally i prefer the latest since i feel it hard to explain how a lost company can keep up with having it's armoury up to date and recruitment etc

Yeah theres plenty of space for made up fluff, as long as you stay through to the real fluff thats already out theres, theres nothing that says you cant make up your own wolf lord and great company post- or pre-current ones.

I would watch out for making fluff on what happens to characters like Logan and Ragnar and their great companies, plus what above posters said about lost companies etc. Theres a lot you can do on your own!

Best option to keep with the up-to-date wargear and options in the Codex is to go at an earlier point in M41. You've got a thousand years to play with easily, and none of the Wolf Lords have been there that long, not even Logan grimnar so you could have a different Great Wolf.
In fact, theres been a trend since the new codex to make pre-heresy space wolves, and Ive seen armies based on the battle of the fang coming up lately!

:) I have to admit I want to paint up a Blood Claw squad after reading about the adventures Redpelt and Helfist. ^_^

I run Ragnar's company but rarely use Ragnar himself. My Wolf Lord is actually a high ranking wolf guard. On the table he uses wolf lord stats and points etc but fluff wise he is one of Ragnar's closest advisors. In fact, he was one of those considered to become Wolf Lord after Berek Thunderfist until Ragnar came on the scene. There were fears of a leadership dispute arising but Hvitr Valdyr (The White Wolf) immediately swore fealty to the young lord, recognising his talents as the leader of the pack. He even painted one of the White Wolf heads adorning his armor black in recognition of Blackmane.

Thats how I do it anyway.

This is how I got around it with my own companies fluff. Just one of many-many ways as shown above.

'The Space Wolves have never been ones to stick close to the codex, and many believe that the old wolf fiercely guards secrets about the exact size of his chapter. Even within the fangs walls hushed voices talk of great companies active outside of the core twelve Wolf Lords. The great company nicknamed the White Wolves is a case in point.

The White Wolves origination is shrouded in enigmatic and venerable tales, loosely describing a sacred oath and a gathering of the chapters fabled hunters and trackers milenia ago. More talk of the burning vengeance of Russ and that not one of his enemies will escape the jaws of the wolf. When the wolfs honor has been dealt a blow and their folly escaped, it is believed they are marked by the white wolf. An unrelenting hunter of the dream world who hungers for vengeance and will harry its foe into the abyss itself.

The white wolf is a patient, silent and determined hunter, traits Wolf Lords of the White Wolves always hold . For they track the most elusive and vile of foes, striking deep in their lair ready to extract the debt owed in blood to the chapter.'
