Chapter idea/s

Recommended Posts

Was flicking through some books this morning, How to paint Space Marines being one of them. I noticed a DIY chapter shown on the inside of the back cover, simply named Hospitallers - obviously referencing the Knights Hospitaller of history.

I've seen the chapter before and even seen attempts to expand it by others but never gave it much thought myself until now.

Having discussed it a little with a friend, i found a spark of interest dispite being slightly mocked.

The idea of a chapter which covets medical lore above all else doesnt seem that much of a stretch, especially if the chapter placed its apothecaries in a leadership role due to some event in the past.

Marines are killers not doctors - so says my former friend. I cant imagine marines performing a planetary assault in the name of rescuing a bunch of orphans who have the sniffles. - he continued.

My arguement in favour was that of course marines prize medical knowledge, they themselves are bio re-engineered. The long lost info on the Emperors geno labs and the creation of the Primarchs sets up a motive not to mention the war against mutation natural and chaos inspired. Nurgles incessant spread of contagions, The likes of Fabius Bile conducting his experiments aswell as the known degradation of various gene seed stocks.

The above sets motive i think.

Oppinions?

Your right when your say Space Marines prize medical knowledge, it would have many benefits if a chapter were to prize that sort of knowledge. There are also many chapters about that have higher than normal numbers of Apothicaries within their ranks, so your idea i think is valid. :)

Sounds interesting enough, the Red Scorpions favour their Apothecaries (their 2nd in Command is Master of the Apothecarion). I was going to do it for my Chapter but then the Codex changed and I couldn't have Apoths lead my squads :)

It could work, they could eventually slip into heresy when they try and grow to Legion size... They could be obsessed with purity after losing a large battle or some of their organs failing them. Go for it!

I took a break from 40k when I went to Uni during 3rd Edtion, when I got back into it we were on 5th Edition, I recently read the 4th edition codex and wish I had been around during the traits era, so much flexability for creating unique rules legal DIY chapters. :(

Sounds good. When someone says Medic Marines to me this is what i think.

Suggest using Mk VI 'Corvinus/Beakie' helmets and robes as much as possible. as a passing nod to the Plague Doctors of the days of yore.

Maybe their home-world was all but obliterated by Nurgelite Cultists and so they have declared war upon Grandfather Nurgle.

Their current crusade is to exterminate Nurgles Rot from the galaxy and end all incarnations of the Zombie Plague.

Their is current friction as to what they want to happen to Fabious Bile. some want to shake him by the hand, set him on fire and steal all his research notes; The Radicals. the others want to set him on fire using his research notes as kinderling; The Puritans. They have never met him but they have come across his New Men quite often, and so they know he is a genius of the Mad Scientist variety. Also they are not sure if the Oblitorator plague should be studied at all, given that it is a deamonic virus, Purge it with Holy Bleach and Anti-bac!

Maybe they disbanded their standard means of organizing and adopted squad sized units to act individually, led by an Apothecary in times of peace and by a Champion in times of war. All in the name of covering more ground. Harder to attack in a dispersed state but no real means of making full war on their own. This means lots more specialists per group than is standard. as each group will need:

1 Apothecary (for the Holy Work and transforming Apprentices)

1 Tech-adept (to keep the armour working and sealed),

1 Astropath (to keep in contact with the other units and to coordinate assaults on inter-stellar epidemics)

1 Champion to lead if battle is called upon

~6 Bodyguards to protect the good doctor in the Holy Work.

The armour is always sealed. they never even ever remove the helmet. No one has seen what they look like since the started their Holy Work. It is rumored that they test contagions on their own genetically altered flesh to find cures for the more devastating abominations and so can not risk the threat of infection to the outside world.

They are all in for taking blood samples of damn near anyone they come into contact with, human and astartes both.

Have very close allies in the Orders Hospitaller of the non-militant arm of the Adepta Sororitas, the Ordo Sepulturum of the Inquisition and the Adeptus Biologicus of the Mechanicus. Not that most individual members of these great institutions don't try to stay as far away from them as possible.

Given how they are spread so far and so thin across the weary light-years it's quite hard to get a true measure of their numbers.

In times of peace when they turn up on a world they are almost always accompanied by mass outbreaks of petty diseases. The Plague Doctors, it is said, do this on purpose to give the immune systems of many worlds something to exercise on and as a mass immunization project, infecting a world with genetically modified Cow Pox to prevent against the hyper-Small Pox ravaging a neighboring system for instance.

Many chapters disapprove of them because they so blatantly disregard the work of Lord Gulliman and some see them as betraying their true role as the Space marines. Many others, all of the Raven guard and most of the Blood Angels descendants for instance, give their approval if it helps them find a cure for their respective medical problems.

Big on Plasma, Melta and Flamer weapons, bolters use Inferno Rounds. The fire cleanses and sterilizes.

These are just suggestions and suggestions only. Feel free to throw away anything that is not useful, which is probably all of it.

Not sure this is within the topic of post, but the original concept behind the word 'hospital' is actually a place of rest for pilgrim, and doesn't actually have anything to do with medicin at all (think ' religious guesthouse' = 'hospitality').

Specifically the Knight Hospitallers derived their name from the fact that they provided places for pilgrims to rest on their journey to the Holy Land.

Personally I think a chapter based on protecting (and recruiting from?) pilgrims throughout the Imperium is kinda cool :Troops:

Much cooler than a medic chapter... But hey, it's your project mate, do what you like!
