Should I convert from Vanilla Marines to Space Wolves?

...such as thunderfire cannons, deep-striking terminators, scouts with shotguns, scout bikers, veterans, command squads, and apothecaries to name a few.

Don't have one, don't like deep-striking, only use Scout Snipers, don't use vets, don't use command squads. Only time I've ever wanted to roll a command squad was as a mounted assault unit on bikes with LC/SS, but this would have cost around 470~ points and was pretty much unfeasible to use in a serious game. Thunderwolf Cavalry? Answer to all my prayers.

No it's all good, and all fine! we wolves are just a proud bunch, who aren't in it just for winning. We're here for the fun, the fluff, and the community. Allot of people here I've grown to learn since I first started, are real wolf-at-heart people. With all that being said............ welcome to the FANG!

I'm not sure you've priced that command squad correctly.

Five men, three with lightning claw and storm shield, one with thunder hammer and storm shield, and all with meltaguns runs in at 380 points. Apothecary gets nothing except a bike of course. That's regarded as the default equip for the bike command squad, and while expensive it gives you mobility, firepower, melee power and survivability. Two of them (with two captains) is a very tough ask for many armies to deal with.

Play whatever army you want to, in any configuration you like, in any colours you like (a lot of my bikes are still being repainted). As long as it's legal it doesn't worry me.

Ok as an old campaigner and a win at all their costs kindda guy, Welcome to the fold.

Your looking for a Wolf Lord that broke his oath, but is still loyal to Russ. I have had one for ever. It's how they got around us not having successer chapters. Sorta a screw up on thier part they needed to fix.

I have played Spaces Wolves since I spoted a pic of them in the old Orange WD Compendium. Loved the Camoe scheme they had. And yes it was Camoe. lol Then in Second Edition I got the new Codex when it came out and loved it. Back when our Terminators teleported and only over charges Plasma weapons could blow up (I hate GW sometimes).

There is nothing wrong with this younf wolf lord wanting to win. I have been winning with spacewolves for 20 years now. And calling him a power gamer makes you guys look alittle judgemental. None of us have played him. And if he is using the codex and rules right, no big deal. Know what I mean.

And show me one SpaceWolf player that does not think our fluff rocks. I like the Imperal Lions too, and Thousand sons, but to me SpaceWolves are the hands down champs of fluff. So what is wrong with someone reading the Codex and going nuts for it. You did.

I have my DIY chapter too. I also have a ton of orks and some Eldar. Does that make one a bandwagon jumper? Sometimes you need a break from your list. I use to win every Saturday tourny at the places I played. So you need to change things up. Slap this guy on the back and give him an Ale.

Welcome to the Fang. Now spank some people in the name of Russ. If they are cute spank them once for me. =)

that doesn't make any sense  correct me if I'm wrong... so your on the verge of doing the exact same thing. BUT, every single one of your marines has been rocking a Ragnar's Company shoulder pad since the start. Soooooooo your marines were Space Wolves, that were counts-as vanilla marines, and your on the verge of going back into Space Wolves. Okay! got it, that's what I got, that's what I thought.

Ha almost, they're my own chapter with a non SW colour scheme but I love wolves (as you can probably guess by now) so I used the Ragnar's company shoulder pads and transfers to use as my chapter emblem.

Mister_wolf will have my respect upon proof of the tatoo lol.

Only a little fella, my first tattoo I got when I was a young pup of 18  Believe it's the great wolf's company!

You gotta play whatever floats your boat.... the details don't really matter.

The problem with the 'internets' is you can start believing a lot of the crud out there about power lists, what works, what doesn't.

I think Adepticon and a few of the other -very large- tournaments give us a very clear indication of the real world 'what works' in 40K..... In the top 25 there are several armies of almost every variant, including tough as nails vanilla marines.

Thunderwolf Cavalry: I have long sought an assault unit as powerful as this, and imho nothing in the SM codex is this deadly. I would roll a 5-man squad, barebones; with 30 rending attacks on the charge (and potentially led by a counts-as canis wolfborn), I honestly don't think they'd need any upgrades.

This is something I really strongly disagree with. Canis is quite mediocre for his points, you will find this out. He's 'ok' but a homemade TWC Lord will probably inevitably win you over.

But everyone just writes off the vanilla codex... it's good. Not great, but good. In some circumstance it is great. But specifically to your point, I challenge you to take your TWC squad, which at this point is nothing more than theory hammer, and test it out.

The Adepticon example I gave featured a few very strong assault elements.... you cannot underestimate Vulkan with Thunder Hammer Termies. This unit is the original deathstar. And it won't fall to Halbreads nearly as easily as TWC.

I believe one of the top Marine lists also featured a Shrike lead, flanking squad of 10 Terminators with fleet.

You just have to be creative. I think if you're going to do Wolves that's great. Welcome aboard! Just don't discount what some creativity can do for the vanilla codex.

And I will tell you this, the first few times you use TWC you might be disappointed. I wanted to use them so bad when the codex first came out. Some people thought they were a 'silly' unit. I loved the idea..... Then I started hearing on the internets how abusive they were and shied away from the idea.

I finally re-visited it and realized it can be a real glass sword kind of unit especially considering the match up. It MUST be supported properly. I think it needs the proper support more than, let's say, the Vulkan Deathstar. It's a very expensive unit.

It also has a -few- more nemesis now like poison availability and as metioned, Halbreads.

The unit IS fun... very fun though but so far I would not say it could crack my top 3 list builds at 1500.

the sweetness of space marines is the flexability to rock back and forth on different codexs. (permitted you have said models to proxy) I my self made a grand army using space marines, but now and again to throw a wrench into the mix ill play blood angels to switch it up for my gamer buddies.
