Glory to Guilliman! Glory to the Imperium!

Lunar Hawk Tactical Marine - 4th Company

The Lunar Hawks, were created around the middle of M39 during the 24th Founding. Their purpose was to help ensure the Kushima Sub-Sector was rid of Orks and to deter pirates and raiders from looting the ravaged worlds after a rampant Ork Waaagh had nearly decimated the area.

The chapter was created using the Geneseed of Roboute Guilliman, but from the second founding chapter; the Novamarines. A selection of warriors were selected from across the Novamarines chapter, notably Brother Captain Uriel whom was of some renown and Brother Jeremiah, a young pious Chaplain. Along with some chapter veterans, this cadre of command personnel, assigned to the creation and training of the fledgling chapter, took it upon themselves to form a chapter very similar to their parent chapter. Having been given the bulk of war materials from the Adeptus Mechanicus, the Lunar Hawks were eager to get to grips with the enemies of man. Starting with the purpose they were created for, the Lunar Hawks went about cleansing the worlds within the Kushima Sub-Sector of the remaining Orkish threat from the recently defeated Waaagh.

The Lunar Hawks take their name from the flying creatures of their associated 'homeworld'. These ‘Hawks’ appear at night and only then rarely and is considered by the local populace to be a good omen if one is seen.

The chapter symbolis a pair of white wings with a white sword in between them. It is similar, if not the same as the Dark Angels symbol. Although veterans and command personnel may have a slight variation.

Their colour scheme is predominantly Grey with White helmets, the colour Red is upon their backpacks and from the knees down. White is used for the melee weapon encasements and Black for ranged encasements.

Homeworld and Fleet

The Lunar Hawks do not have a homeworld per say, they instead have a moderate base of operations within the Kushima System. The Kushima system is the capital of the Kushima Sub-Sector and consists of its Star and 3 planets. Of them, only 2 are considered vital points of interest to the Imperium. Kattori, a Mining planet, is situated closest to the sun; it has an abundance of natural minerals that the Imperium greatly benefits from. However, due to Humanities impatience, the planet was nearly torn asunder in a cataclysmic mining incident. A third of the planet was blown into space, wracking the rest of the surface with earthquakes and the like. Since the incident, Kattori has been re-settled but in much smaller numbers and is under the strictest of mining operations, lest another mining fatality happens. With a third of Kattori now circling the lower hemisphere of the planet actual as an Asteroid field, the Lunar Hawks have since taken up residence within a large chunk of the former planet, known as Kattori 3 and setting up its base of operations.

As the chapter does not have a fortress monastery it has a space faring fleet, but due to its young age it has not acquired a huge number of assets. The chapter fleet consists of a single Battlebarge, the 'Centurion' and around six Strike Cruisers and associated Escorts. This fleet does not stay within the Kushima system as a whole but patrols the Sub-Sector altogether. Strike cruisers with an Escort Squadron are occasionally seen outside the Sub-Sector where upon the chapter may be taking crusades or aiding other Imperial forces.

Combat Doctrine

The Lunar Hawks do not stray far from the teachings of the Codex, for it was written by none other than their Primarch and also because it was sternly taught to them by the training cadre from the Novamarines, of whom are noted for being rather hardline in regards to following the Codex. They have however, developed a slightly zealous streak in its battle brothers, this is in part, due to fighting against the savage Orks for almost two decades in the Kushima Sub-Sector but also from the pious sermons of its chapter chaplains. Other than this vigour in melee combat, the chapter is considered as codex as can be, because they believe that by the correct application of pressure, an opponent can be crushed, hence they stay a versatile force to be reckoned with.
In battle the Lunar Hawks fight with the knowledge that they are the righteous blade of the Emperor and they smite their enemies without mercy nor respite.
The Emerald Blade
The Emerald Blade was the power weapon of Brother Uriel, the chapters first Master. The blade was shattered by the Daemon Prince Orax and it was feared unable to be reforged. However thanks to both the Adeptus Mechanicus and the chapters own Techmarines the blade was lovingly restored. The blade is now a Relic of the chapters early history and is only wielded by only the most honourable battle brothers.

An example of their zealotry and stoicism can be seen during the events on Kushima Primaris, where the chapter did battle with the forces of chaos, where upon the chapter was slowly losing ground, the battle brothers determined not yield. Brother Uriel, the chapter master strove forward to face the chaos leader, a daemon prince no less, but was tragically slain during the duel, his sword shattered in two. Though their beloved commander had fallen, the Lunar Hawks continued to fight all the harder, determined to win against the traitor forces. Brother Ajax, the chapter champion took his former masters blade and hacked the daemons head off, turning the fight in favour of the loyalists causing the renegades to flee before the wrath of the Lunar Hawks. From this the Lunar Hawks fell upon the traitors with renewed vigour and soon after, won the battle.

Organisation

Being a Codex chapter, the Lunar Hawks are organised in just the same way as their predecessors, the Ultramarines and the Novamarines. The only notable exception being that the 6th and 7th reserve companies are often deployed along side battle companies, utilizing both bikes and speeders to great effect. This comes from fighting the orks in their home system where upon a fast retaliatory force proved to be a major asset.

The reserve companies are more often than not, assigned to support the battle companies with small to medium contingencies. While the battle company will provide the back bone of the fighting force, the reserve elements will be on hand to tailor themselves according to the commanding officers requests. Scouts squads from 10th company will also be used in a similar way to the reserve companies, often being assigned to larger task groups to provide them with reconnaissance and stealth units.

Recruitment

The Lunar Hawks recruit from wherever they find suitable subjects. Most notably is the Yashima System which has a handful of worlds suitable for recruiting from. The chapter follows standard recruiting procedures and this has led to a continually stable geneseed.

Beliefs
Speech by Brother Jeremiah, Master of Sanctity
"Brothers! The enemy is upon us! Let them feel our wrath, let them know who we are and what we stand for! Let them fear us! Glory to Gulliman! Glory to the Imperium of Man!"

The Lunar Hawks belief system consists of commemorating the deeds of the Emperor, whom they see as a gifted individual; their Primarch and their own chapter heroes. Like the Salamanders, they also believe that human life is valuable and should be protected where possible. This is because they see themselves as defenders of humanity and if they do not do their duty then they are not worthy of being Astartes.

Battlecry

While the chapter does not have a specific battlecry, they do have a few sayings of sorts.
‘Only In Death Does Duty End!’
'Glory to Guilliman!'
'For the Emperor!'

Recent History

Just under 2 millennia have have passed since the chapters founding and alot has happened. The chapter has had many a victory to be lauded but also its share of defeats to be heeded. By the grace of the Golden Throne the chapter endures to this day and is actively seeking the enemies of man. The chapter is currenty staving of fresh Dark Eldar attacks upon the Yushima System and is gearing up within the Kushima System to set off on a crusade.

Well, there you have it, my Index Astartes: Lunar Hawks :)

Originally the Lunar Hawks were completely different, with another version of background saved on my computer. i had gotten bored with the colour scheme and noticed the fluff for them was rather in-depth but long and amateur at best, so i gave them a re-write and this is the end product.

I feel it is lacking in some areas in comparison to my other background, but i didnt want to make the IA too long lest i bore you to death :P

So feel free to comment and criticise on the various parts of the above IA. Hopefully over time, things can be improved upon and edited to make it an IA worthy of an Astartes chapter :D

Thanks for your time!

Shaabhekh

ps: also, i may well post some more fluff relating to my Chapter and their system/sub-sector etc in the near future, to both beef up the chapter and its related topics but also to provide some more insight as to the chapters character.

DIY Chapters go to Liber :D

Yup, i only just noticed that, after spending a huge amount of time constantly preveiwing the post before i submitted it... only to plonk it in the wrong section :P then again, the Lunar Hawks are a chapter of legend! :) (to me anyway :P )

Shaabhekh

Hi Shaabhekh, I have a couple pointers that you might want to consider :)

First: Are you aware that the name of your chapter corresponds closely with that of the Luna Wolves, the original name of Horus' legion?

I'm not saying that you need to change your chapter name, but I find the similarity a bit distracting.

Secondly: Why did your chapter change it's symbol to a sword after their home blew up? I don't see a logical connection and therefore it seems a bit odd. If you prefer the look of the Dark Angels symbol, either for aesthetic or painting reasons, just say use that as their symbol. No need to conjure up an excuse, just mention that the original chapter master found the combination of wings and a sword fitting.

It's not like there's a College of Arms policing the Adeptus Astartes ;)

Thirdly and more important: I have a hard time discerning the theme of your chapter. While an obvious theme is not neccesarily the only (or best!) way to create a chapter it does wonders for the reader who doesn't share your understanding of the chapter.

Bluntly stated; the Space Wolves are viking-werewolfs, the Blood Angels are noble vampires, the Black Templars are crazy fanatics - what are the Lunar Hawks?

You have hinted of this within you Combat Doctrine section, and certainly combat doctrine can set chapters apart, but I feel that it is not so for your chapter.

Largely codex adherent with no notable flaws or conflict distinguishing them from their fellows, your chapter seem to lack character.

Usually Ultramarine succesors distinguish themselves either through a unique history, or in the Home World and Beliefs section. While this is not true for everybody, it's a valid guideline.

I think your IA needs a bit of work in these three areas and I think you need to think about what sets them apart from the 999 other chapters out there :P

I hope you can use the advise, best of luck!

Cheers

@ Olisredan: at them moments the chapter symbol is pretty much the DA symbol lol, mainly because DoW and DoW2 lacked anything creative etc so i stuck with that, plus assembling the models i had i utilised the DA spures a bit to give myself a chapter icon on the pauldrons.

i will go over the company of marines and see how many could be adjusted and see what im left with :)

@Malthe: i am aware they are closely related and that particulary why i chose it, because not alot of people go near the word Luna/Lunar when making chapter names, so i figured i would jst wade right in and slap it on as a name ;)

in accordance to the chapter symbol changing, it does seem as though i have missed a key element out lol, if one had read about the sword being shattered by the Daemon Prince (which happened on Kushima Primaris) and the side caption about the blade being reforged, then this would be why the chapter changed the symbol. altho i will need to edit this a little later on tonight to clear it up :) (cheers for pointing that out lol - so that it does relate to the events upon which a chapters iconic blade (the 1st masters sword) was broken and made anew afterwards)

and on your third point, i do see what you mean, so again when i edit this later, i will try to bring out the character a bit more within the combat doctrine/beliefs section(s) and see if it is more discernable :)

Thanks again guys

Shaabhekh

Very interesting and familiar color scheme

Now on with the C&C.

The Lunar Hawks, were created around the middle of M39 during the 24th Founding. Their purpose was to help ensure the Imperiums hold within the Kushima Sub-Sector were re-established and held after a rampant Ork Waaagh had nearly decimated the area.

Chapters aren't normally established to hold anything, and since it takes over 50 years to establish one ... doing so to combat a Waaagh! is never gonna work.

The chapter symbol, originally, was that of a pair of white wings with a small 12 pointed star in their centre, a symbol of homage to the Novamarines. Since the tragic events on Kushima Primaris, the chapter has deemed it prudent to change the symbol to a pair of white wings with a white sword in between them. It is similar, if not the same as the Dark Angels symbol.

Did I miss something?

Their colour scheme is predominantly Grey with White helmets, the colour Red is upon their backpacks and from the knees down. Black is used for the weapon encasements but from the events of Kushima Primaris, close combat weapons are now painted White.

There, I missed it again.

The Lunar Hawks do not have a homeworld per say, they instead have a moderate base of operations within the Kushima System.

One sentence paragraph. Either add to it or combine it with the one below it.

The Kushima system is the capital of the Kushima Sub-Sector and consists of its Star and 3 planets. Of them, only 2 are considered vital points of interest to the Imperium. Kattori is a Mining planet and is situated closest to the sun. it has an abundance of natural minerals that the Imperium greatly benefits from.

With a third of Kattori now circling the lower hemisphere of the planet actual as an Asteroid field, the Lunar Hawks have since taken up residence within a large chunk of the former planet, setting up its base of operations.

Please combine these properly.

As the chapter does not have a fortress monastery it has a space faring fleet, but due to its young age it has not acquired a huge number of assets.

The Lunar Hawks do not stray far from the teachings of the Codex, for it was written by none other than their Primarch and also because it was sternly taught to them by the training cadre from the Novamarines, of whom are noted for being rather hardline in regards to following the Codex.

One sentence paragraphs ... see above.

The chapter however, has developed a slightly zealous streak in its battle brothers, this is in part, due to fighting against the savage Orks for almost two decades in the Kushima Sub-Sector but also from the pious sermons of its chapter chaplains. Other than this vigour in melee combat, the chapter is considered as codex as can be, because they believe that by the correct application of pressure, an opponent can be crushed, hence they stay a versatile force to be reckoned with.

In battle the Lunar Hawks fight with the knowledge that they are the righteous blade of the Emperor and they smite their enemies without mercy nor respite

Combine properly.

An example of their zealotry and stoicism can be seen during an engagement with the forces of chaos where upon the chapter was slowly losing ground, slowly, for the battle brothers of the chapter refused yield.

We get it ... it was slow.

Combine properly

The Lunar Hawks recruit from wherever they find suitable subjects. Most notably is the Yashima System which has a handful of worlds suitable for recruiting from.

The chapter follows standard recruiting procedures and this has led to a continually stable geneseed.

Well since you hardly ever leave the system (not normal for SMs) it seems right that you recruit from there.

The Lunar Hawks belief system consists of commemorating the deeds of the Emperor, whom they see as a gifted individual; their Primarch and their own chapter heroes.

Though not Salamanders, they also believe that human life is valuable and should be protected where possible. This is because they see themselves as defenders of humanity and if they do not do their duty then they are not worthy of being Astartes.

Combine properly.

Also, sounds better to say "Like the Salamanders"

@ Ecritter: i had read your IA ther other day too and did notcied a closeness in colours lol :P

as for combining the sentences etc, i will do that, usually its done to help me section it out and stop it from being a blob where people dare not read lol, but i will combine when i edit soon :)

the Tragic events stated early on will be corrected, i had overshot the mark on wht i was planning on writing and missed out the verification later on. might re-write to establish whtats, what :tu:

and they do leave the system, just not the sub-sector that much. but again will re-word to make them a lil more out going :P

ta for C&C tho :P

Shaabhekh

ps: edited quickly to sort out sentencing etc, will beef out character a shortly :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Hello, I'm a little bit late, but I'm always ready to provide healthy dose of critique. ;)

Origins and Geneseed

A selection of warriors were selected from across the Novamarines chapter, notably Brother Captain Uriel whom was of some renown and Brother Jeremiah, a young pious Chaplain. Along with some chapter veterans, this cadre of command personnel, assigned to the creation and training of the fledgling chapter, took it upon themselves to form a chapter very similar to their parent chapter.

- Selection... selected...

- Name-dropping. As far I can tell Uriel, nor Jeremiah, doesn't play any notable role in the Chapter creation.

Their colour scheme is predominantly Grey with White helmets, the colour Red is upon their backpacks and from the knees down. White is used for the melee weapon encasements and Black for ranged encasements.

- You don't need to tell us, we can see that very well. ^_^

- Btw, white helmet is used as identification of Veterans.

Homeworld and Fleet

The Kushima system is the capital of the Kushima Sub-Sector and consists of its Star and 3 planets. Of them, only 2 are considered vital points of interest to the Imperium. Of them, only 2 are considered vital points of interest to the Imperium.

- If the Kushima system is capital of Kushima sub-sector, it means there is dockyard of the sub-sector fleet and Administratum/Arbites/Departmento Munitorium HQ. In other words, there should be civilized world to handle and support such *large* chunk of Imperial bureaucracy, not just backwater mining planet.

- You are mentioning only one and... well so-called third planet.

the Lunar Hawks have since taken up residence within a large chunk of the former planet, known as Kattori 3 and setting up its base of operations.

As the chapter does not have a fortress monastery it has a space faring flee

- Eh? Base of operations is Fortress Monastery unless it's a ship.

Combat Doctrine

They have however, developed a slightly zealous streak in its battle brothers, this is in part, due to fighting against the savage Orks for almost two decades in the Kushima Sub-Sector but also from the pious sermons of its chapter chaplains.

- Your Chapter is around here for almost 2,000 years. In the case of Space Marines, it means that they have been fighting various horrors of galaxy for nearly 2,000 years.

Other than this vigour in melee combat

- What vigour in close combat? Being zealous is quite vague term. There is several ways how could you be zealous without beating anyone in CC, burning witches at spot is one of them.

An example of their zealotry and stoicism can be seen during the events on Kushima Primaris, where the chapter did battle with the forces of chaos, where upon the chapter was slowly losing ground, the battle brothers determined not yield.

- Uhm, what? You haven't been fighting Orks? It's some kind of Tzeentchian magic! Quick, Brothers! Kill it with fire!

Organisation

- Eh, that's how every Codex Chapter deploys its Reserves, in support and reinforcements of Battle Co's.

Beliefs

- There is nothing wrong with it, just... there is nothing good. The Belief section is actually the section where your Chapter(since it's Codex Chapter) should stand out the most and well... There is not very much to set apart your Chapter from the rest of random Codex Chapters.

Cheers, NightrawenII.
