the iron templars

Recommended Posts

Hi, this is my first attempt so please be gentle!

As you may know, i am not much of a painter so am trying to decide on one chapter that is-

a-easy to paint

b- i find them interesting.

Ive looked at lots of chapters but they all have 1 or 2 things about them that i dont like...so im making my own!

Chapter name-iron templars

gene-seed-imperial fists (dorn is my favourite primarch after all)

Paint scheme-silver armour, black shoulderpads, codex unit markings.

chapter symbol-a templar cross.

recruit from-feudal worlds. (i like knights!)

crusading chapter-yes!

codex?-yes (but slight variation, more on this later!)

speciality-mechanised assault/blitzkrieg.

slight variation- the iron templars believe that attack is better than defence and rarely employ static defences (unless this is absolutely necessary!). The chapter consists of ten companies (called crusades) and each is led by a captain (called a paladin-they wield relic blades as a badge of office). The first crusade is led by the chapter master.

each crusade consists of-

6 tactical squads,

2 assault,

2 squads of sternguard (these replace devastators)

command squad.

paladin, chaplain, librarian.

scouts are not counted as "on the strength" but each crusade generally has 2 scout squads.

any thoughts on this?

Hi Belisarius, great decision!

Hopefully I and others can help you out with the process.

Well the obvious question is how and why your chapter have neglated the use of reserve companies and devastator squads?

How do they make up for the loss of firepower and where does all those sternguard come from?

Also, four battle companies is enough for more than 90 % of the space marine chapters in existence, why do the Iron Templars need 10?

Diverging form standart codex organization is a rather overused concept I belive, and usually it boils down to difference for the sake of being different.

Think about it, the Imperial Fist are as codex adherent as you can get (outside the Ultramarines, maybe) and the Crimson Fist likewise.

Granted the Black Templars (from which you seem to draw inspiration) are an exception, but it is widely established that 1) they have no succesors 2) they really are the exception that confirms the rule!

On a final note, I seem to recall that the paint scheme you describe fits that of the Iron Knights, another of Dorn's succesor chapters. You might want to look into that :)

I think the idea of a blitzkrieg chapter is a fine enough concept, but I must admit that I have a hard time combining it with a knightly theme... Which isn't to say that it can't be done!

However I do think that you would benefit from staying within codex limits, with regards to organization. The burden of having to explain a divergence, to me at least, seem to far outweight the conceptual gains of it.

Also do remember; the IA that you are writing doesn't dictate what models you play with. Even if you despise devastators as a 40k player, it doesn't mean that there shouldn't be any in you chapter as per the IA!

Best of luck with your chapter!

Cheers

Thanks for that! I always found the codex restriction of having reserve companies was a bit restrictive-i much preferred the way the Tau military or a SW company are organised. Each of my paladins is a crusading knight in the service of the emperor and should be fighting! I imagine the extra sternguard are the best warriors of each crusade (as there isnt a 1st company as well...)

Im going for a sort of mix of all the bits i like about the howling griffons, black templars, imperial fists, executioners and storm wardens.

Regarding how the blitzkrieg fits in with the knightly theme-the rhino is their steed, is it not?

(im gonna stop typing now-just finished an essay so my head hurts!)

thank you very much for the feedback! hope ive answered your questions-if not, ,let me know! :D

had another idea-before starting an engagement the marines in a crusade cut off all their hair, shave off their beards and swear not to cut them again until the mission is over. Watched over by the chaplains, each battle brother swears an oath that they will fulfill in battle, if they fail...pain glove!

Pain Glove does not work as a punishment with the Fists and their children, considering the Imperial Fists use the agony of it as part of their daily meditation. Just as the Mighty Dorn used to do.

The psychological pain of having done goofed in front of not only the Chaplain but the whole Chapter would be much more agonising to a marine. Perhaps having some sort of Death Guard-ish Repentant Squads. Perhaps the squads led personally by the Chaplains into the thickest fighting to get some sweet, sweet atonement.

for the real future-knight look you could either give them lots of Attack-Bikes or, better yet, mechanical horses in war-plate. A strange, home-grown branch of the Mechanicus make them in the same way that the cyber-mastiffs favored by the Inquisition are made. Gene-spliced with a Rhinoceros and further up-graded with cybernetics. It's a grumpy tank that eats grass.

If all the companies are active companies then you are going to get a lot more ass kicked but also have a much higher turnover rate. And it also removes the safety margin that the codex chapters have where they can gradually filter through replacements to the Active Companies on a steady stream. Yours would not have this. A couple of bad recruitment drives combined with a couple of bad campaigns and you are ~1/4 of the chapter down.

Not that this is a bad thing as it adds flavor to a Chapter.

Also, with every one busy killing things, you will need a separate department within the chapter to charge with recruitment. Perhaps when a Marine gets too beat up to be fixed properly and they know their presence on the field of war would be a liability they take the job of Recruitment Officer as a sort of Working Retirement.

Also there will be a lot more Failed Aspirants to go with the increased turn over rate. Some of the less crippled ones could get the unglamorous job of garrisoning the places the rest of the Chapter catches. And generally assists the Guard if they are present. The things that have to be done but no one wants to do, sort of thing.

just ideas.

thanks for that! i was thinking that they recruit constantly and heavily to keep the numbers up (kind of like the howling griffons)

thats an excellent idea of putting the badly wounded brothers in charge of recruitment (backed up by lots of chapter serfs to do the admin and servitors to do all the work-possibly failed aspirants?)
