Slaughter Them All

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I'm currently studying for the bar and figured this would be a decent way to relax when not studying. I asked my mom to ship me the models from about ten years ago when I first started the hobby. All of them were Blood Angels models or chaos space marine pieces, so I figured I would strip them down (they were truly heinous, yikes!) and try to give them a second life as Knights of Blood. If I read the fluff correctly, they are lunatics who leave a trail of bodies behind them, so I'm going to try to show that. Without further ado, I give you many of the stripped models. I should have taken some pictures of them before their bath in simple green, it was awful on a truly epic scale.

Obviously Dante will be used as Dante, but the marine in the background will be death company, and the chaplain will become a Lemartes stand in, mainly because I really like the sculpt and and already had it.

I blue tacked Mephiston together and if you notice he has the backpack from an old chaos lord. I think it will add to the flavor that they are barely on the edge of loyalty when I finally get it finished.

The Emperor's Champion will also be death company, and if you notice he will be wearing a raptor style jump pack and has an assault squad pointing power fist. The other raptor jump pack will be given to the sergeant of an assault squad. I guess at this point I should mention that the goal is to have the death company painted white rather than black. I'm aware that the Angels Encarmine are the only ones that do that, but I think it will look stellar when they are on the table and the rest of the army is metallic with some red. The chaos lord you see is in the process of getting the eight pointed stars and arrows and such removed and I will turn him into a Seth stand in. I'm really looking forward to working on that one.

Nothing really special here, although I am going to use the chaos missile launcher and attach it to my assault on black reach heavy weapons operator. One question: the old school blood angels sergeant is going to be used in the death company, and I am having a devil of a time removing the black spray base coat. Does anyone know of something that works better than simple green?

Last image for now. The sanguinary priest has already been dry brushed boltgun metal, but I'm thinking about adding another round of drybrushing and seeing how it turns out. Oh, and if you notice the techmarine is a mix of the havoc leader's legs and the techmarine stuff from the old honor guard box. Believe it or not, but that techmarine was the first miniature I ever painted when it had plastic legs and a jump pack, and I am SO happy there are no pictures of how bad it was.

That's all for now. I have some stuff painted, but I need to get back to studying. Thanks for visiting.

Not really. Although for metal models anything with acetone in it does the job well, I hear. (Brake Fluid, Nail Polish Remover.)

Good to see your giving some old models a new lease of life - and Blood Knights to boot. Good luck with the bar, btw. :)

I'm using Dettol to strip my old models, works really good

Yes, Dettol it is friendly to plastic.

Also: I didn't mention Dettol in my first post as I didn't know whether or not it's available in the states. Is it?

I was looking for dettol at the grocery store today, but didn't see any. It may or may not be present in the states, but I think what I am going to do is just numerous baths of simple green and keep at it with the old toothbrush I use until for the most part the primer is off. On a plus side, my cousin sent me a ravenwing battleforce box for my graduation (awesome) and that should promise numerous hours of work.

I have had this bike in this condition for a few days, and I am reasonably happy with it, although there are a few details to finish. With this army, I'm not really going for jaw dropping, I'm just shooting for to improve my painting skills and have the whole thing look playable. Please pardon the limited camera skills, my only camera is my blackberry.

For some reason I can't get imageshack to upload the picture of the side of the bike. I've tried three times and am giving up. Feel free to let me know what you think.

Thank you Olisredan, I know it's been a while. I have been working on a few more of the bikes, but more than that I have been working on my old models. As I've mentioned before, I want to paint my Death Company white, so here is an attempt at doing just that.

I know that chaplains are supposed to be black, but as I am going to use this one as Lemartes, and the chaplain is a part of the death company. I like the thought of marines keeping their armor when they lose their minds, so whatever honors, equipment, or otherwise they previously used the chapter lets them keep, thus the chaplain is allowed to keep his armor but it gets painted white. I'm not sure what to use on the eagles and skulls and what not, but I'm thinking either gold or red would look good. Any input is welcome.

Good luck with the bar exam.

Also nice job using some of the older models. While building my Deathwing I picked up a few of the older terminator models to mix in with my terminators, and it just looks cool having some old mixed in with the new.

As far as Lemartes goes, I've never painted white models before, so I don't have know how to paint the heraldry. Maybe steal a few ideas from the White Scars?

I've spent a lot of time trying to work on the old models, and here are some of the results. I'm happiest (although that is not to say happy) with the chaplain, and came to the conclusion that painting white is the hardest :tu: thing I've ever tried to paint. Of course, I can't figure out how to paint eyes or jewels to any level of satisfaction. Oh well, here are some WIP pictures. I need to finish some details and add the jump packs.

If your still having trouble removing paint from your metal minis I'd say the best and most effective way to completely strip metal models is to give them a bath in lacquer thinner then give them a nice scrub with an old tooth brush (I use thinner designed for auto motive use). I have been using it for 12 years and never met a metal model I couldn't strip completely. Besides that I love your choice on a Chapter. Besides Flesh Tearers, Knights of Blood are one of my favorite Blood Angel successor Chapters.

Mainly, I just wanted to poke you in the direction of this article, on page 2 (click on the Power fists) there's a good guide for eyes that really helped me when I first started.

As for gems, this guide is really good. It looks hard, but once you've tried it out a few time it should come easily. If you want red gems, try replacing the colours for Blood Red (main), Chaos Black (shade), Golden yellow (Lighter edge), Skull white ('dot'/extreme light) and Scab red (Blending for shade).

But I also wanted to say that the work looks good so far. It's good to see someone brightening these old models up.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the kind words. The reason the power fist is down is because I plan on adding a raptor style jump pack to him so the goal is to have that model look as if it is descending and singling out its target. I have gotten the paint off the metal models to some level of satisfaction, the real challenge is whether or not I can get the paint off the old plastic models I have. That could be a project in and of itself. Zincite, thank you for the article on the eyes, I'm going to try that out, it looks a lot easier than the guide on gw's site. Also, thank you for the guide to jewels, I'm also going to try that out. Question though, do you blend the paint to make the transition smoother, or do you clean your brush and just add new color. I'm slightly confused by that guide. Within the next couple days I should have my attack bike squad done but for the small details, and will post them when it's at least put together.

Hello there, the army is expanding, slowly to tell the truth.

First, we have my attack bike squad. I really want to put heraldry in my army, so this is the sixth squad of the fifth company of the knights of blood. I still do not have the chapter insignia to where I want it, so I haven't attached the left shoulder pads yet. These are still very wip, so there is much left to be done.

http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/3117/0054iw.jpg

Next are some tactical marines, third squad of the fifth company, but I haven't made the blood drop on the pauldrons yet. If you look closely, I haven't finished the kneepads on all of them, and also I only have seven marines. Not sure where it happened, but I can't seem to find the last three. Who knows. The sergeant is going to have a chainsword, whenever I get around to adding it.

Here is the beginning of an assault squad. Yeah, I really don't have much to say about it.

Finally, this is some of my death company with a sanguinary priest. More than anything, this picture is for the purpose of showing the contrast between the death company and the rest of the army.

Sorry for the slow reply. ^_^

I don't bother blending. Just painting the colours on is fine, in my experience. I do add a small line of Scab Red between the Shading/main colour, but that's about it.

There's a good, simple guide in the last Eldar codex that shows you how to do them, but I can't find it on Google. This Picture is similar though.

I'd recommend you just try it out though, I found it very easy to do once I'd tried it a few times. :P

hey, i noticed you where looking for something to strip paint with. Try Dawn Power Dissolver. Comes in a blue spray bottle, about 3 bucks a whack. Its used for removing caked on gunk on dishes for the dishwasher, but it rips paint off of metal, plastic and resin. Smells floral, wont give you cancer and washes away with good old tap water and an old tooth brush.

i have successfully removed most types of paint, stain, varnish and so forth. never again will i fret over a paint job that didn't come out right.

Hello all, sorry for the slow reply, life tends to get in the way of things.

@Andrew J - thank you, that white is a total pain.

@Zincite - thank you for the help with the jewels. Those pictures are very helpful.

@araekyus - what stores can you pick the dawn power dissolver at? I haven't been able to find it at the local grocery.

Now, a few pictures of some progress.

First, the beginnings of my bike squad, very early in the process.

Next, three angles of my biker sergeant. I still have a lot to do on this model, but I want to get a few games in with this army, so I think I'm going to get things close on most models and put in the details once things are put together.

A little bit more work has been done on my Lemartes stand in. Here it is. I'm fairly happy with how the white has turned out, but I forgot how I painted the parchment on the purity seals so they aren't all the same.
