Suggestions, opinions and ideas please!

I'm planning to start a new army after seven years of not playing 40k. I used to play with the basic and boring chaos space marine miniatures, but now I've got something different in mind.

I want to play as CSM, but I've decided to use miniatures from the loyalist SM range and use some bits from CSM range to give them the edge I'm looking for. What's your take on using loyalist models as 'fallen' chaos space marines? I've already got some background for my future army; they used to be extremely pious and they held the Emperor as god. Just recently something made them reject the Imperial creed and fall into Chaos (haven't made up what yet...) and now they try to purge the galaxy from the Imperial lies and their take on heretics. The background is still a bit generic but I hope that I'll be able to make it more credible etc.

I haven't decided a name for the chapter yet, but I would like to name them after their background and their color scheme. I'm planning to paint the armour in Bleached bone with white highlights, trimming in bronze and weapons as wooden. Their whole left arm will be entirely black, except the shoulder pad and trimming. Any tales on the colors?

As this is my first post here, don't be haters, I'd just like to get some opinions from players who've played longer than me and who have a bit more insight than me since I haven't painted or played in seven years.

Welcome to the B&C. Threads on DIY Chapter creation have their own forum - Liber Astartes. Don't fret though, as a mod will undoubtedly move this fairly shortly.

A resource you might find handy is the B&C Painter - click "SM Painter" in the top corner - which will allow you to create an example of your colour scheme for us to view.

How about Purifiers for the name? It gives it an ironic twist.

I've actually entertained the idea for loyalist models with a few chaos bits for quite a while. I say go for it, and put up the results.

Alright, I post this the moment James moved it. Talk about bad timing.

Sounds like you have yourself some johhny come lately Word Bearers! *cue old Word Bearer vet with a power walker* Back in my day, we were worshiping the Emperor as a god and then turning to Chaos with STYLE! :eek

Well one way you can get a name is by further defining what made them turn. If there was a specific turning point on a planet, like their homeworld being condemned to die or they run across some dark secret ruins somewhere and turn, they could be "The Prophets of Taurnos" or "Heralds of Skathrasin" whatever you decide to name the place.

For color scheme, they could be "the guys that hit you with wooden sticks until you die!"...ok not that catchy.

Color scheme is tricky, you could try names such as the Blackened Gauntlet Host or similar. Point to the exceptions to their color scheme rather than the majority...because then you risk having to repeatedly explain

"So they are the Bone Guards right?"

"Yep"

"So why is their arm black?"

Which, of course, if it is part of the background works fine...but just be prepared to do it.

Really, develop their background a wee bit more and the name should come to you.

Is there a ritual where they shove their gantlets into flame as an Oath to first the Emperor and then perverted into a ritual to the Dark Gods?

@CMID

Hahah yeah same.

I really like the name Purifiers. That gives some more ideas about their armour design, such as 'purifying flames' on their black should pad etc.

One thing I forgot to write in my first post was that they have turned renegade but they are still somewhat ashamed because they rejected the Imperial faith and now they praise Chaos undivided.

That's what I've been trying to figure out and pretty much stuck at the Word Bearers kind of rejection. Although I love to think that my marines believe that they serve the Imperium properly by going renegade but their turning was inspired by lies from some chaos deity. Now that they've sort of realized it they are ashamed. The left hand is painted black because of their shame, much like the Black Legions armour.

Mixing Chaos Marine and Space Marine kits is a good idea - one that appeals to lots of people. It's especially suitable for recently turned chapters like yours, and of course almost nobody will mind you using them (after all, why should they?).

Only thing is for your Terminators (if you even have any) Codex Chaos Marines gives them power weapons rather than Power fists as standard, so the standard terminators kit will force you into upgrading your termies. Personally, for my Iron Warriors terminators I currently have 10 made from Grey Knight Terminators, and plan my next 10 to be a cross between the Chaos Terminators and Wolf Guard Terminators.

If they're pious as you suggest, perhaps a Chaplain model as a Chaos Lord would go nicely to lead the force? Maybe he had to replace the Captain in a leadership role because that shame you mentioned was getting to him?

Since they're similar to the Word Bearers in some ways (but enough difference to make them interesting) maybe a Dark Apostle of the Word Bearers could have been involved in their fall? It might help you to develop the background more if you settle on who caused it.

As for attacking "their take on heretics", maybe they originally focussed their attacks on the Ecclesiarchy, and during a major raid of some kind they found something or just realised for themselves that they had fallen to Chaos?

Just some ideas off the top of my head - hope they help and good luck!

You forget the guard regiments. But seriously, just one completed IA/IT about Purifiers would be nice.

On topic, it would be much cheaper for you if you went to a bits site and just randomly picked legs, torsos, heads, and arms until you had enough pieces for your marines. Plus it gives them a more random assortment of equipment look.

How about they spend a long time out on the galactic south-west on the Utter Edge where the stars are few and scattered.

Out so far with nothing but Orks, apostate psykers and abominations as far as the eye can see. They are there so long that no one remembers a realistic picture of the Imperium. When they finally make contact with the rest of the Imperium and participate in a few campaigns they are horrified at the sheer uncaring attitude it has to it's people.

Also during all this time a Word Bearer missionary is growing increasingly unhappy with the way his Legion is interpriting the words of the gods. They have, he feels, perverted the creed of freedom into the hateful ranting of bitter degenerates and moral reprobates. So he takes his retinue of servants and goes in search of any who will listen. manages to slip out of the Legion unnoticed during the 10th - 12th Black Crusade and goes around showing people the Happy side of Chaos.

As he has preached his blasphemous messages of peace and love around the galaxy his religious beliefs have changed and mutated as new things have been encountered. This sort of thing happens when you spend too long conversing with xenos.

Khorne = Honor and Pride

Slaanesh = The striving for Perfection

Tzneetch = Ambition, Hope

Nurgle = Tenacity, fortitude, contentment

Emperor = Servitude and subjugation

Isha = Love, respite and recovery

Cegorach = The undoing of schemes and Mirth.

The worship of the gods as practiced by the majority of other Chaos Marines is blasphemous and base. They see the gods as bringers of freedom and enlightenment.

As such EVERYONE wants to kill them. There is also much feuding as there are about a hundred and fifty different sub-cults in the chapters ranks and many members are in more than one cult in an ever shifting web of alliances and feuds. the infighting has never led to complete disintegration of the chapter or anything worse than savage beatings because they all know that there is safety in numbers and none of them have anywhere else to go.

They get new equipment from the less than legal Rouge Traders.

No ideas about names though.

Something with religious overtones maybe.

Feel free to throw the ideas away.
