hey guys i was thinking today about what i want my new GK army to be like. i decided that i would either do a paladin or a purifier army and i need convincing to go either way. yes i know i want to go down this route (i play sanguinary guard a lot while using dante with my BA) and it won't be pure whatever i go with but it will be very heavy with whatever i choose

(sorry if this doesn't make much sense, had trouble trying to figure out how to get my point across)

i get what your saying mate, one of they guys i play against regularly is a sanguinary guard fan too :tu:

they are both great choices, however personally i would always pick purifiers over paladins. they are cheaper, so you get more. all the special weapons are cheap (half price for psycannon) if not FREE. they are in PA so you can mount them is a cheap rhino or razorback, unlike the paladins, which you would have to buy a 250 point land raider for. and my favorite part is the cleansing flame, allowing you to get an auto S4 hit in before combat actually starts (providing you pass the psychic test)

i like the idea of paladins (2 wound terminators as troops is just awesome), but i don't like the lack of models you got for it.

i do realise that in order to take purifiers as troops you need to buy one of the worst characters in 40K history. i mean at least Draigo has IC. but again, much cheaper.

anyways... that's my preference hope it helped :)

actually i kinda like crowe.

well heres what i see

PURIFIER PROS

larger # of models

4 special weapons per 10 models

can be in a rhino

cleansing flame

free incinerators

most like a sanguinary guard army

probably cheapest in $ terms

PURIFIER CONS

easier to kill

PALADIN PROS

2 wound terminators (possibly with FNP :tu: )

4 special weapons per 10 models

holocaust

free halberds and hammers

PALADIN CONS

i would have to buy A LOT of terminators

VERY low model count

help please

actually there is a factor that i forgot to ask, what points range are you planning on?

because usually in the 1,250 - 1,500 point range you can get away with having foot slogging terminators as there wont be to much S8 and or AP1 shots coming at you. and therefore you can justify taking them and watch your opponent cry as all his bullets bounce harmlessly of your gleaming silver armor :)

i had enough models left over from the previous models for me to try both, i just liked how the purifiers played a lot better, especially mounted in Razorbacks.

oh yeah... i forgot about the apothecary :P FNP is totally cheap, especially on top of 2+ with 4++ if you keep the sword :P

i did a squad bash with my SW mate. he thought he was being a smart arse by taking a full wolf guard squad in termie armor. so i decided to run t a full paladin squad :P

10 terminators, 4 psycannons, FNP and a banner......... i lost 1 model.

only problem.... that squad was 655 points..... OWCH!

now with those kinds of costs i could run 2 full squads of purifiers with 8 psycannons, and still have points to spare.

i guess in the end you gotta ask yourself.... do i want awesomeness of killyness, or do i want to have invincible guys that slowly wittle down the enemy.

its obvious what i have chosen :P

It's really up to you man. Both offer certain things, both are excellent in close-combat (in different ways), and both bring psycannon spam like a boss.

Purifiers:

Pros: More bodies, Rhino, you can fit all 10 in a Stormraven, can MSU with Razorbacks if you want

Cons: Still only WS4, you have to pay for nemesis upgrades (although they're dirt cheap), still only 3+ armour so no harder to kill at range than cheaper Strike squads

Paladins:

Pros: With an Apothecary, they are insanely hard to kill. WS5 means they slap your face, and free halberds and hammers make them dangerous as hell. They also fire psycannon in heavy mode always, so on the move they and quad psycannon Purifiers have the same output. They also have Deepstrike, which is very useful.

Cons: They're fat, so they can't fit in anything except a Stormraven. They are gold-plated expensive per model, so if someone drops Demolisher or similar on you, prepare to cry. You may have to waste 'Grand Strategy', or shell out for Draigo, if you bring the Deathstar (as half your army in one squad begs to be made scoring).

In smaller games, Purifiers. In larger games, both.

Multiple Small Units. It allows you to spread out your fire more, or concentrate it more efficiently. It also makes your units more durable, as the enemy can only fire at a few each turn.

If you hang around the Liber much, you'll know that I vote Purifiers.

Paladins all the way. With Draigo, naturally. Relentless makes 4 shots per psycannon per turn even when moving, result. It would actually probably be cheaper in moneys as well, as someone has mentioned you can get double the number of purifiers for the same points, but the kit is not half the price of the terminators! So you may even save a fair chunk of cash.

Anyway, Paladins are awesome. Grand Strategy to give them counter-attack for the game is always fun, or re-roll to-wound rolls of 1. Take a Dreadknight as well I'd suggest. Paladins, Draigo and Dreadknight. That's pretty much how I run my army, occasionally I use Stern or a Librarian.

It's always nice to have a full army of units with invulnerable saves of 5++ at least, with a 2+ armour save

paladins are lovely, and also a cheap army. with 5 guys costing 275 points without upgrades, my 1500 point army was made using draigo, 3 boxes of terminators and a dreadknight. the cheapest 1500 point army I've made so far ;)

Foot slogging with 2 wound terminators isn't as bad as it seems, especially if you add a teleporting dreadknight, lets you distract the opponent and helps your pallies survive :)
