Rune Priest magick

Heya,

At the moment i'm very busy doing research to a new DIY chapter, using the Space Wolf codex (here more info on it: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...owtopic=231686) I will make a WIP and maybe a IA (if i have the courage).

Then i will also explain the why i want to use the SW dex and such. But i want to say i'm not making a Lost Company, nor a successor of the SW. Still thinking on good explanations.. So suggestions are appreciated.

As you might have read in the link, my inspiration comes from shamans, and i need some advice on the Librarian/Rune Priest matter.

Rune Priests are very unique, they do not use arcane sort of spells, but elemental spells. In the novel a Thousand Sons, Russ himself said something about the nature of their magick to Wyrmdrake.

Now my question: how unique is their magick? How can i explain the magic used of my Shamans?

I myself was thinking that the shamans/librarians have learned ways to make their powers take on certain appearances (elemental appearances) but are not elemental of nature.

What do you guys think?

Also, now i'm here. I'm still searching for a source of their gene-seed (primarch). I can't/don't want to use Russ for obvious reasons. So i'm searching a spiritual primarch. If only a bit.. any has ideas?

ever consider a Dark Angels route instead? most people would say Dark Angels are more monk-like, but they are also very native american like.. especially with all the feathers they have. Not to mention, easier for you to explain, since you said it yourself that you wouldn't use Russ gene seed.

This seems like something that should probably be asked in the DIY section. As a rough guide the Space Wolves seem to channel their power from Fenris/Elements, while it is obviously still the warp the nature of the way they are using it produces slightly different results and a bit of resilience to some of the temptations of Chaos. A good choice could possibly be Jaghatai Khan of the White Scars who probably seem closer to the Space Wolves than any other Chapter.

Good Luck

I wouldnt agree MaveriK, even though feathers are a bit of a catch call of Native Americans it is hardly prominent or ever pushed. That and there is no evidence that the DA or any founded Chapters are ritualistic when it comes to the warp and they are hardly a spiritual

I agree, Dark Angels would probably be more appropriate. You can easily make a successor of the Lion's gene-seed, looking more like the native american's spiritual style, being a successor they can easily be a lot more spiritual than theyre gene-seed provider, especially if your DIY chapter take a lot of their recruits from a world or set of worlds that are highly spiritualistic.

Like Mav said theres plenty of feathers on the equipment from the Dark Angels upgrade pack. Also, if youre looking for spears that are more Sci-fi than the ones from the Beastmen sets, I suggest Dark Eldar or Dark Elves or possibly High Elves, quite easily converted to suit 40k. Also, you might want to consider the Grey Knights Halberds even tho they are designed to be Force/Power Wpns.

Go down to your local GW and check out the Dark Angels codex to figure out if their librarians have psychic powers matching what you had in mind.

Hope you figure out what to do.

If you still insist on using the SW codex which no one can stop you from doing except for Russ himself, I suggest you take a look at some of phosis21's post about his Avenging Sons chapter, which I reckon is a really good way to use the SW codex for something else than wolves, although I personally, generally dont approve of the SW codex being used this way, he has actually done a good job. The Avenging Sons are a basically a brotherhood of knights.

Basically, Blood Claws are Aspiring Knights, Grey Hunters are "Knights of the Realm" and the Wolf Guard are "Grail Knights", thunderwolf cavalry are obviously mounted knights and etc etc.

Search for his posts on the matter or pm him for advice!

I will stick with the khan as primarch for now. THanks for all the suggestions.

I will make something similar as Phosis, only with a shamanistic culture. Still have to think of names, but they will not be called anything in the SW codex. :) I already have some themes i'm gonna build units around (earth - bull, Wind -eagle) etc..

Cheers for the replies so far

Remember, remember, remember, though- all that power is still drawn from the Warp, no matter how it comes out. Don't forget about the inherent dangers, risks and such that the Warp holds so be carful when writing fluff. Acknowledging that their powers come from the warp could make some of the mystique of your DIY be lost but making them ignorant to the source of their power might make them look stupid. Not at all offending your efforts, just some wary advice from a fluff fan ;)
