Lords of Dawn Chapter Symbol

“The wrath of the Almighty God-Emperor is now hanging over a great part of this heretic world. Yet there is time for your souls to be saved. Bow before the Almighty God-Emperor and let everyone fly out of this Sodom. Haste and escape for your lives, look not behind you, lest the fires of purification that will consume this world consume you as well."

-- Agrath Angelos

“The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them, so that people are without excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles. They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen.”

-- Agrath Angelos

Origins

The Lords of Dawn were founded in the 12th founding. They came from the Dark Angels geneseed. Although they spent a relatively short time with their origin chapter they were heavily influenced by the stories of the Lion and the Emperor. They devoted themselves to purity before their primarch and their God. Agrath Angelos was the most influential chapter master. He was the Chaplin for the entire chapter before becoming Chapter master. He often compared the emperor to his own loving but stern father. This is the image of the Emperor that the Lords of Dawn believe in.

Early in the Chapter’s history they encountered iron men. Argrath found the iron men to be completely abominations, and felt that servitors were just as bad as iron men. This became Chapter dogma and caused a major rift between them and the Adeptus Mechanicus. Relationships between the two became strained. This cut them off from a lot of harder equipment to acquire such as suits of Terminator armor and dreadnaughts. They adjusted their tactics for the lack of these heavy hitters. They focused on the close combat required of fighting in a Space hulk and almost completely eschewed the use of vehicles.

Early in the chapter’s history a decapitation strike destroyed the majority of the Lords of Dawn leadership. It was because of this that the Brethren and the Warrior-Disciples were created. This also caused a shift to the importance of leadership in the Lords of Dawn. Every year a hundred thousand men and fifty thousand women would be tithed to the Lords of Dawn. The majority would become members of the Brethren. The Brethren are extensively trained for combat and augmented so that their life span and fighting capability is extended. Every member of the Brethren will see combat at least once. Real combat experience is highly prized among the Brethren. However, the majority of their time is spent doing support functions for the Chapter and the Fleet. A select few are inducted into the Warrior-Disciples who are personally led and discipled by the members of the Lords of Dawn. Being a Warrior Disciple is considered a high honor. Psykers are identified quickly and they are extensively trained from identification to make them extremely difficult for a daemon to possess. They often become Warrior-Disciples.

Their first major engagement after the decapitation strike was the Damnation of Carrion space hulk. This became the first core ship for the Lords of Dawn. It was renamed the Damnation of Heresy. After the clearing of the Damnation they decided to take the destruction and clearing of Space Hulks as one of their primary missions. The cleared Space Hulks would be either converted to be used by the Lords of Dawn or cut up for raw materials, sometimes both. This gave the chapter and the Brethren room to grow. Later hulks were converted to singular purposes, such as manufacturing or growing food. They gathered several minor STCs while clearing the Space Hulks however because of their strained relations with the Adeptus Mechanicus they did not share the templates.

As the number of brethren grew, so did the number of children born to the Brethren. In a little more than a hundred years, the Brethren born into service outnumbered the brethren who were tithed to the fleet. A short time later they ended the tithes. This lead to them becoming very insular and having little contact with the world outside the fleet. The beliefs of the chapter became more and more radical and fanatic. It was because of this that they formed close ties to the Ecclesiarchy. Many in the Ecclesiarchy considered them to be extremely devout in their beliefs about the emperor. This lead to them being a go to chapter for the Ecclesiarchy. After a particularly dangerous mission to retrieve valuable artifacts for the Ecclesiarchy, they were granted the addition of a preceptory of Adepta Sororitas from the Orders Hospitallar and Millitant. This preceptor also began to take new recruits from the Breathren. The preceptory was founded onboard a cleared space hulk named Blood of the Faithful. Aware of the growing population and power of the fleet that the Lords of Dawn controlled, the Inquisition began to take note and created a Conclave of Inquisitors to watch over the fleet in 634.M36.

The Ark Mechanicus Hand of the Onmissiah crashed into a space hulk and lost most of its fleet. Within days all of the Servitors were lost, and over the next two years as it drifted through the warp it also lost most of the remaining crew. The hulk came out of the warp and was attacked by the Lords of Dawn. They managed to rescue the Ark and brethren helped to crew the repaired ark. This lead to them sharing the STC information that they had gathered and repairing the strained relationship with the Adeptus Mechanicus. The Hand of the Onmissiah joined the Lords of Dawn fleet. They also began to recruit members from the Brethren. Before the start of M37, there was no one on the entire fleet who had not been born into the Breathren.

The Fleet has split many times. Currently there are between fourteen and twenty fleets. The actual number is obscured because fleets often work together. The known fleets are One for each company, one for the inquisitors, two for the Adepta Sororitas, one for the Adeptus Mechanicus and then between one and six others for various tasks that need completion. There are some in the Administratum who believe that the Lords of Dawn have gotten out of hand. However, for now they are mostly under control and do what they are told to. Getting rid of them would be difficult becuase there is a lot of space to hide in and they could never be certain that they got all of them. Their crusades are always bloody affairs and they could literally tear through a great many worlds on a burning crusade before being put down. The Inquisitors feel that the Lords of Dawn are operating within acceptable limits for a Space Marine Chapter.

History

Late M35 The 12th founding.

Early M36 They encounter iron men, servitors become heresy.

253.M36 A decapitation strike takes out the Lords of Dawn Leadership and many of their ships. Creation of the Brethren.

254.M36 First tithe of a hundred and fifty thousand. Fleet population is around 200,000.

262.M36 the space hulk Damnation of Carrion threatens a hive world. The Lords of Dawn begin to clear it. Brethren assist in the clearing. The new space allows for the expansion allows the number of Brethren to grow.

359.M36 Fleet population reaches sixteen million. First time that born brethren outnumber the tithed breathren.

383.M36 Fleet Population reaches twenty million. Last tithe taken.

504.M36 Last tithed Brethren dies.

538.M36 Retrieval of Artifacts from a Hiveworld that was to be subjected to Exterminatis for heresy on the orders of the Ecclesiarchy. Sisters of Battle Orders Hospitaller and Millitant Preceptory joins the Lords of Dawn Fleet.

634.M36 Conclave of Inquisitors is formed to watch over the Lords of Dawn.

778.M36 Ark Mechanicus Hand of the Omnissiah crashes into a Space Hulk. Drifts through warp attached to Space Hulk.

780.M36 Lords of Dawn Rescue the Hand of Omnissiah. Strained relations with the Adeptus Mechanicus improves with the sharing of minor STC templates that the Lords of Dawn had gathered. Hand of the Omnissiah joins the fleet. This is the last outside addition to the Lords of Dawn Fleet. From this point forward, all major permanent additions come from within the fleet or defeated space hulks.

Before 001.M37 Death of the last outside member of the Lords of Dawn Fleet dies. Twenty First generation of Brethren enters the service of the Lords of Dawn.

999.M41 Fleet Population is over 18 billion. One Hundredth and fifty seventh generation of Brethren enters service to the Lords of Dawn.

Home World

They have no homeworld because they are fleet based. They have a large fleet centered on the Damnation of Heresy, Blood of the Faithful, and Hand of the Omnissiah. They have ships that specialize in certain functions such as farming, mining, and manufacturing. Their culture is highly insulated from the outside world. They manufacture all of their own weapons and equipment. Many of their traditions come from a time when space was at an extreme premium and every ship was cramped. However, that is less true in the modern era. Although every member is employed by the Lords of Dawn they have vast amounts of free time. They are encouraged to use this freetime to make the shipboard economy more efficient and to do whatever they can to find better ways of doing things. They often conceal these improvements as new STC that they find.

Organization and Combat Doctrine

The Lords of Dawn are mostly organized along the lines of the Codex. They have a thousand line space marines in ten companies. From there it is adapted for the addition of the Warrior-Disciples and command of the Brethren. While overall the Brethren support themselves, a select few are chosen to be lead and discipled by members of the Lords of Dawn. Because every one of the Lords of Dawn is a leader and has their own men to command they are very self-reliant. They also put high consideration on the leaders that are willing to sacrifice their own wellbeing for those that they lead. Being loyal and able to inspire loyalty is highly prized among the Lords of Dawn. Their combat doctrine is also adapted from the Codex for the Warrior Disciples and Brethren. They focus on close combat and fast brutal strikes. When on a planet they often accomplish this by using drop pods or assault vehicles.

Beliefs

They believe in the goodhood of the emperor, of his chosen son Lion El'Jonson, and of Machine God who form a holy trinity. They believe that one day they will rise together to cleanse the impure galaxy in fire and blood. They live on starships because until he comes again the rest of the galaxy is more or less impure and not deserving of the true believers. Occasionally worlds need to be reminded and prepared for the return and the second great crusade. When this happens they fall upon that world and cleanse it of everything that does not recognize the truth of their beliefs. They also refuse to shut up about it unless they feel that everyone agrees with them, and so put off many other space marine chapters. They tend to get along better with more religious chapters and less well with chapters that don’t believe in the Godhood of the Emperor. They get along particularly well with the Space Wolves with whom they agree in both the simplicity and sincerity of their beliefs. Once a chapter gets past the beliefs of the Lords of Dawn they find some of the most dangerous and dedicated warriors in the galaxy who are willing to fight any heresy, mutation, or xenos at the drop of a hat.

I read this, and while I'm not today in mood, to give a harsh critique. This article persuaded me of otherwise.

Origins

They came from the Dark Angels geneseed. Although they spent a relatively short time with their origin chapter they were heavily influenced by the stories of the Lion and the Emperor.

- ... and they will be told about this Fallen business, so...

They devoted themselves to purity before their primarch and their God.

- Adeptus Astartes don't worship Emperor as God.

He was the Chaplin for the entire chapter before becoming Chapter master.

- ChaplAin. Chaplin was english comic in between wars.

- Btw, why was chosen as Chapter Master?

Early in the Chapter’s history they encountered iron men. Argrath found the iron men to be completely abominations, and felt that servitors were just as bad as iron men.

- Man of Iron is different name for sentient machines, think Matrix movie.

- If you abhor servitors because of MoI, then you should add here Dreadnoughts and all Machine Spirits.

They adjusted their tactics for the lack of these heavy hitters. They focused on the close combat required of fighting in a Space hulk and almost completely eschewed the use of vehicles.

- Do you realize the TDA is used almost exlusively for such missions?

Early in the chapter’s history a decapitation strike destroyed the majority of the Lords of Dawn leadership. It was because of this that the Brethren and the Warrior-Disciples were created.

- Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't understand this train of thoughts, at all.

After the clearing of the Damnation they decided to take the destruction and clearing of Space Hulks as one of their primary missions.

- Looking for Space Hulks is like chasing the Flying Dutchman. It's not exactly easy job nor very smart decision, considering all the vermin infesting the Space Hulks.

Every year a hundred thousand men and fifty thousand women would be tithed to the Lords of Dawn. The majority would become members of the Brethren.

~

The cleared Space Hulks would be either converted to be used by the Lords of Dawn or cut up for raw materials, sometimes both. This gave the chapter and the Brethren room to grow. Later hulks were converted to singular purposes, such as manufacturing or growing food.

- You are committing quite obvious act of heresy and no one noticed. Nice. <_<

They gathered several minor STCs while clearing the Space Hulks however because of their strained relations with the Adeptus Mechanicus they did not share the templates.

- If the Admech ever get a hint of such techno-heresy, you will be done for. No kidding.

The Ark Mechanicus Hand of the Onmissiah crashed into a space hulk and lost most of its fleet. Within days all of the Servitors were lost, and over the next two years as it drifted through the warp it also lost most of the remaining crew. - Really? ;) Deus ex machina development.

- Hello, we are Astral Claws and we have, among other things, committed the same heresy. Our Chapter was declared Excommunicate Traitoris and dealt with sword and fire.

Beliefs

They tend to get along better with more religious chapters and less well with chapters that don’t believe in the Godhood of the Emperor.

- That's like 99% of Chapters, though.

they find some of the most dangerous and dedicated warriors in the galaxy who are willing to fight any heresy, mutation, or xenos at the drop of a hat.

- Yes, they are Space Marines and...?

+++++

Now, don't get me wrong, but your writing style is god-awful. It's mechanical like the sentences were put together on assembly line or something. There is simply no fluency.

NightrawenII, thank you for your review. I am definitely going to implement some of the points that you have stated here. However, a few of them need a little clarification.

I'm not clear on what your meaning here. Space hulks would make for excellent raw materials. It also insures that the space hulk will not reform or come back later.

Can you be more specific about what is the God from the Machine here? I can point out several but I think they are well within the bounds. If you could clarify that would be of great help.

Thanks, I'm going to keep that in mind as I rewrite it.

The Whole using Space Hulks for raw materials thing is a little risky. Have you ever seen the film Event Horizon?

Here is the trailer for it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gd0nQUF00Sg...36A4A38D41E3A1B

If you imagine it as humanities first attempt at Warp Travel then it fits perfectly into the 40k universe. It is also a great example of what happens to a ship with no Gellar Field when it visits the warp.

Also you might find this picture funny and appropriate. Sometimes I think it should be permanently stuck at the top of the screen.

That's just not right. Creepy.

I want to see it :D

Anyways, I agree with soddinnutter. Don't bother using space hulks for raw materials. Just have a collection of world spaced throughout the segmentum that your Chapter has pacts with for certain raw materials in return for protection.

If you already have the industrial infrastructure floating around with your zero-gravity mega-forges and such then you could just strip-mine asteroids and never have to worry about resource shortages ever again.

Also I really recommend Event Horizon.

Liberate Tutame Ex Infernis.

You won't need eyes to see where we're going.

So you have minerals mined. What about foods and such? And isn't is a heresy of some sort to use craft that xenos and possibly heretics used as their Base of Operations?

Also I really recommend Event Horizon.

Wonder if I can find it for free online...

Quote from the movie?

Depends. There are Xeno things that are in use. Jokearo (or however it's spelled) digital weapons are much in favor amongst the nobility and Inquisition.

And the Adeptus Astartes, much like the Rouge Traders, are outside of Imperial Law. So they can get away with a little more before the =I= starts to get trigger happy. And it's only illegal if anyone finds out.

Food is easy. YOu have the raw materials to build some really huge hydroponics farms and such.

Also if the Japanese can make steak from turd I am pretty sure the Mechanicus can do it as well.

Adeptus Astartes don't worship Emperor as God.

Not entirely true as at least one, the White Consuls, is noted to directly worship the Emperor as a God. So some do it's just exceptionally rare.

Also, if you're going to criticise something you could at least make one or two suggestions for improvements rather than just lambasting it.

I have suggested alternatives for this IA.

Another thing: I don't really like the idea of the Brethren. It's like giving the Lords of Dawn their own Imperial Guard regiment, and I'm sure the HLoT don't like that idea.

Also, regarding the psychic Warrior-Disciples...the Inquistion would like a word.

Making chapters mega awesome anti-hero's that are adored by their followers and misunderstood by most everyone else gets boring after a while. The Lords of Dawn don't have to have everything possible to make them interesting, I'd recommend dropping the guard brethren thing, the tithes of people and the on/off love with Mars. The fleet idea is a good one, a migrating fleet of humans crosses paths with a crusade fleet and BAM! We have an interesting chapter with interesting background that aren't silly batman-come-robin-hood-come-awesomesauce-come-allthingstoallmenmarines.

I like a lot of your ideas individually, but together, it seems clunky, inelegant and a little bit off.

Paradill

Ok, thanks for all of your ideas and thoughts. I've been working on blending them together more smoothly. This is almost a complete reworking of everything that I hope flows smoother.

Lords of Dawn Overview

Forces Recognition

The Lords of Dawn official colors are white and blue. They use white as a base color with blue providing the trim and decoration. While their armor is mostly painted a medium grey, the shoulders are white with a blue trim. The Skull, Wings, and belt is also white. Their chapter symbol is a blue seven pointed star on a white field.

Origins and History

See attached timeline for overview of events.

The details of their founding are lost to history. However, I believe that they were founded in the twelfth founding. They appear too early for the fourteenth and too late to be a part of the eleventh. The first hard information on them comes in 024.M36. They had chosen the world of Kilmer to be their home and it was officially declared Aptus Non. The next few years are uneventful for the Lords of Dawn. They performed their duties as was expected of them by the Imperium and the Codex. In 055.M36 a space hulk named Judgment of Devastation was discovered on collision course with Kilmer. The space marine fleet was augmented by a nearby imperial fleet. After a week of bombardment it became clear that the collision with Kilmer became unavoidable. The Lords of Dawn decided to rescue their few artifacts and as many of the population as they could. The imperial fleet was also able to assist with this and 90% of the population was saved along with most of the strength of the Lords of Dawn. It was at this time that the records pertaining to their founding were lost to my investigation. The refugees of Kilmer were packed aboard the ships of the Space Marine fleet. During the next five years, they apparently lost the will to find a new homeworld and instead became a permanent fixture aboard the space marine ships. In 060.M36 the home world of the Lords of Dawn was listed as fleet. During the same time year a Warrant of Trade was issued to the former governor of Kilmer to form a fleet for the refugees of Kilmer and to support the Lords of Dawn.

In 148.M36 there was a official review of the fleets by the rogue trader and the chapter master of the Lords of Dawn. There were 57 Space marine ships and 4385 ships belonging to the Kilmer fleet. The review stated that there were exactly 147 space marine squads, 63 scouts, and 421 ranked space marines for a total of 1,484 space marines. The population of the Kilmer fleet was 3,294,345. Of this number 2,800,193 were adults and all trained in the defense force of the fleet. The name of the defense force was Brethren, indicating close ties to the Lords of Dawn chapter. Of those, 280,019 were considered to be active duty. 18,370 were considered to be warrior-disciples fighting alongside the Lords of Dawn. After this fleet review, the fleets were split roughly according to company lines. These fleets were numbered I through X.

During the age of apostasy, the Lords of Dawn were separated from the empire by serious warp storms. This did not deter them from their duties and preformed them well. In 286.M36 the Lords of Dawn joined Thor’s crusade. This also caused a massive swelling of the number of ships and people in the Kilmer fleet. Previous to this, the Kilmer fleet believed as the space marines did. However, because of the influence of Thor and the new believers, they became more in line with his beliefs. Because of this, the space marines slowly began to accept the truth of the imperial dogma. They maintained close ties to the ecclesiarchy after this and some units from the Lords of Dawn accompanied Thor on his journeys. In 359.M36 two Adepta Sororitas Commanderies joined the Kilmer fleet. One of them was a part of the Orders Hospitaller and the other of the Orders Militant. The Warrant of Trade was amended to the support of the Commanderies as well as the Lords of Dawn. In 439.M36 the Commanderies were upgraded to Preceptorys.

As far as the records show, The Ark Mechanicus Hand of the Onmissiah crashed into a space hulk and lost most of its fleet in 538.M36. After approximately two years in the warp and the loss of the majority of the crew the hulk came out of the warp and was attacked by the Lords of Dawn. They managed to rescue the Ark and the Kilmer fleet helped to crew the repaired ark. The Hand of the Onmissiah and it’s new fleet joined the Lords of Dawn fleet at the fleet review in 634.M36. The Warrant of Trade was again revised to add the fleet of the Hand of the Onmissiah that the Kilmer Trader was to support. The Lords of Dawn had 152 space marine squads, 97 scouts and 413 ranked space marines for a total of 1510 space marines. They used 47 ships. The Kilmer Rouge Trader fleet had 67,234 ships with a population of 16,243,974 adults. All of them were considered to be trained as Brethren. 1,825,359,752 were considered to be active duty in the brethren and 23,893 were considered to be warrior-disciples with the Orders Militant and 19,375 with the Lords of Dawn. The Adepta Sororitas Orders militant fleet amounted to 35 ships and 1853 Sisters. The Adepta Sororitas Orders Hospitaller fleet consisted of 270 ships, with 1674 sisters. A lord inquisitor had also attached a fleet to them at this time to watch over them consisting of 27 ships. The Hand of the Onmissiah also had a fleet consisting of 547 ships. This review was conducted by the Kilmer Rouge Trader, The Chapter Master of the Lords of Dawn. Both Canoness Preceptors, the Magos Explorator, and the Inquisitor. This fleet was commanded by the High Lords of Terra to explore the far reaches of the Segmentum Obscurus for a hundred years and given a name as a whole of Ardua Survailiious.

During the hundred years that they explored, they were far from any outside support. They learned how to mine asteroids and dead worlds for raw materials and depend on each other for support. In 723.M36 the fleet was returning to terra with the discoveries that they had made. They flanked the 5th Black Crusade and were instrumental in sending it back into the eye of terror. Excited about this success, they were given a more extensive mission in Segmentum Obscurus for a hundred and fifty years to return in 900.M36. The fleet again departed and returned to the imperium in time to help repulse the 6th Black Crusade. During the sixth black crusade, some of the captains of the fleet were seduced by Chaos and fell with those that were on them. As the 6th black crusade ended, the shadow fleet fled into the Ultima Segmentum. In hot pursuit, the fleet followed into the darkest regions of the segmentum. Over the course of the last two hundred and fifty years they have hunted the shadow fleet without mercy. However, the shadow fleet put the lessons learned during the two commissions to explore to grow and to hide. Whenever it seems that they seem to be defeated they keep coming back. This has resulted in the growth of the entire fleet to over ten times the size it was before their first expedition.

157.M37 Return of the Fleet from the crusade. Most recent fleet review.

I'm going to leave criticism of this to higher powers, but I have one bone to pick...

In paragraph 3, you have 1,484 Marines on 57 ships. Then, if the fourth paragraph, you have the Chapter grow to 1,510 Marines, but the Chapter fleet drops to 47 ships. Why does the Chapter grow so much, and why did they lose ships?

The growth of the chapter happened entirely in the scouts. During the first review, you had ships that were designed to work without any support. During the second review, they had the support as needed from the other groups that made up the fleet. This means that they need to use fewer ships to get things done. The number is likely to drop even more at a third review because they are more integrated with the other groups.
