ommelette
Hey guys, I'm going to order some paints online to broaden my palette. I was wondering, before commiting the moolah towards buying them, if there is some obscure paint which you have found to be indespensible (not obvious ones like white and black though >_>, unless they are somehow super special.) The reason being is that I discovered that vallejo has some interesting paints like a whole fluorescent range and coloured tints. There are more obscure kinds of paints are there, so have any of you had any great experiences with these random paints? Brother Predacon
One paint that I can't live without is a reeeeealy old GW paint called 'Vomit Brown' Thanks to the old style paint pot, it still holds up really well. I swear the old pots vacuum sealed the paint inside. As its been discontinued, I'm not sure what I'll do when it finally runs out... Firedrake Cordova
There are more obscure kinds of paints are there, so have any of you had any great experiences with these random paints? GW's old "Armour Wash", which was a mix of blue and black inks, and I believe is still available from Coat D'Arms. Yeah, I could just mix the current black & blue GW washes, but I'm lazy and pre-mixed is nice... :P Thanks to the old style paint pot, it still holds up really well. I swear the old pots vacuum sealed the paint inside. Yup, I still have GW paints from the 1990's (Create Paint Set, et al) that are fine. :P As long as the pot lid doesn't crack (happened in a few cases), you should be fine. ;) As its been discontinued, I'm not sure what I'll do when it finally runs out... You could try the Coat D'Arms version (Maelstrom Games sell them)? They made it originally, and are supposed to be using the same formula, I think..? http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Paint_Ra...atibility_Chart Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/232187-which-paints-do-you-find-most-invaluable/#findComment-2792962 Share on other sites
Magos Takatus
I have gone through phases, but I tend to find whatever army I am painting, I seem to always use Kommando Khaki, Deneb Stone and Graveyard Earth. I think this is because I always end up using these sorts of tones for bone detail and bases. I play collect Ulthwé Eldar and my Rangers had Deneb stone mixed into the main colours to make them a little more muted, and I think I might try that with the marine scouts in my army when I get round to them. I'd also say I can never quite get away from Scab Red and Red Gore. My Crimson Fists and my DIY marine chapter use them, as do most of my non power armoured models. :P I'd agree with brother predacon, vomit brown and vermin brown seem really handy to me. You'd think I would just have an army of dull muddy marines, considering the pots of paint I'm always opening. Olis
Vermin Brown seems to be an old favourite of mine - anything that needs to be brown it'll be that or Scorched Brown. Also - Boltgun Metal almost always is the base metallic paint I use unless what I'm painting definitely needs to be gold or bronze, it can be highlighted easily and you can get away with using just one coat of it if you're feeling lazy. :woot: Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/232187-which-paints-do-you-find-most-invaluable/#findComment-2794995 Share on other sites
crandall87
Bleached bone is my number one paint. I always mix it in with colours for my highlights Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/232187-which-paints-do-you-find-most-invaluable/#findComment-2795278 Share on other sites
CptCortez
Vallejo' Oily Steel is a popular paint for me. And, unfortunately, I couldn't live without GW's trio og awesome washes, Badab Black/Devlan Mud/Gryphonne Sepia. LoneSniperSG
Vomit Brown is discontinued? That must have been fairly recent, because it's still listed in the Citadel Tanks book. Apparently looking through my paint box tells me that Space Wolves Grey, Shadow Grey and Codex Grey are my indispensible paints.. since I have about four pots of each. Although these are my army colors so... IDK, when it comes to screens, lenses and laser sights, I always reach for Dark Angels Green, Regal Blue and Blood Red. My favorite ones are probably the metallics. If there were no Boltgun Metal I would probably freak out. barry_hhh
do you have many GW foundation paints? they are fantastic , perfect for base coats i sometimes mix them in with the thinner pigmented colours to help with their coverage , that works great. Kronk
Reaper Master Series Ancient Bronze, Silver Toned Triad, and polished bone. Of course, I use a ton of other colors on my Templars and Crimson Fists, but the above are must-haves for me.
