Dwars
Hi all readers, I'm starting up a Grey Knight army. I've bought the codex and a box of grey knights. The knights will a strike squad to start my force with. I don't know what I will take as a HQ choice. Any help starting up is welcome. I will post my first pics soon. Till next post!!! dwars Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/232414-starting-my-grey-knights-army/ Share on other sites
thade
I'm in the same boat, more or less...tho I'll be spending at least another week or two studying the codex before purchasing my first models. Is this your first 40k army? Your first Imperium army? For me, I have a Space Marines force (a DIY chapter) and I used to use PAGK as allies under the old ally rules (which are now deprecated). I still have about a dozen PAGK and an unpainted LR, so that'll be the beginning of my force. I'm thinking of scoring a box or two of terminators and going for a Paladin Death Star (for the charm of it). Also, I think they'll be hella fun to paint as well has challenging to play (given their point-cost I'll always be dramatically out-numbered). As for an IC, I'll either run Draigo (so that the Paladins can be troops), a Librarian for melee support, or a Brother-Captain with a Psycannon for ranged fire support. I will definitely field a Dreadknight. Those are my thoughts. Yours? :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/232414-starting-my-grey-knights-army/#findComment-2795628 Share on other sites
templargdt
I think a Librarian is a great HQ choice for us. The problem there is transport (your choices are Storm Raven or Land Raider, or Chimera if you also buy an inquisitor and henchmen squad.) If you are starting a smaller force, an Inquisitor might be a better choice since its cheap and also can go in a Rhino. Welcome to the Grey Knights! Dwars
This is my third 40K army I started with a horde of orks, to switch a bit I started a space wolf army and I fell in love with power armour. My army is going to include a strike squad so I can add some numbers to the army (so I can make a bad choice now and then). But then you almost need a squad of termies in a grey knight army so I will score a box of those guys to, paladins are so badass. The dreadknight is a must have, i love the model and a monstrous creature with termie armour; Hell Yea! For my HQ my eye fell on the Brotherhood Champion to start the army with, maybe later a Brother-captain with a Incinerator and a halberd both master-crafted. I also like the Castellan Crowe model so he is also an option for me. Let me know what you think! THE PORTCULLIS
Buy the Librarian model. This HQ choice is stand alone excellent. But if you want to branch out you can proxy it as an Ordo Malleus Inquisitor or Grandmaster/Brother Captain. I have a Librarian model converted with a hammer and it makes a fine Mordrak too. Failing this get Coteaz as he is the gateway to an Inquisitorail list and is at a low points cost one of the best HQ choices in any codex. Yea, librarians are always great choices for all army's, but the grey knight one has great boosting powers and offensive powers too and you can take them all! for transport I will go with an oldschool land raider if I will go for a Librarian. I know that I answered your question with a question, but the answer is no. Master-crafting is not twin-linking. Valerian thanks I overlooked that bit, but is a Incerator a nice weapon for a Brother-captain? Just finished the bases for my first grey knights and I'm totaly excited to start with the knights. I will post a pic of the bases soon so you all can tell me what you think of it and help me with futher ideas. Valerian thanks I overlooked that bit, but is a Incerator a nice weapon for a Brother-captain? Absolutely! Just five points (IIRC) for a weapon that can cost 20 elsewhere in your list. It's what I'm planning on using on my generic GM. Dwars
Hi all! My list is starting to come together! So here is what I've come up with so far. I'm aiming at a starting force of 1000 points with Castellan Crowe as my first HQ. First of is a big squad of Purifiers (10); 4 Psycannons 3 Halberds 1 Deamon hammer 1 Warding stave Knight of the flame with Deamon hammer and digital weapons Rhino for 366 points Don't know if it's over the top but it can do a lot of damage shooting and in cc. Next is a small squad of Purifiers (5); 1 Incinerator 2 Falchions 1 Warding stave Knight of the flame with Deamon hammer and digital weapons Psyback this one is 215 points Crowe will go with this squad and kick some ass :P This is all I have for now, let me know what you think of my list so far. thade
Probably very effective. Pay particular mind to Crowe's special rule though, as it means he'll either be all alone OR one of your squads will take some serious hurt if it gets charged. At that points value, it will make or break you. List looks fun though. :P Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/232414-starting-my-grey-knights-army/#findComment-2798634 Share on other sites
mercenary
Crowe does NOT have the 'Independent Character' special rule, so he can not join other units, thats why there is so much Crowe hate out there. So he either hijacks one of your Purifiers transports or just runs behinds rhino/razorbacks/dradknights/etc. As to your list, warding staves are not worth it, better off taking your enemy down first before they have a chance to strike. Minimum sized units works brilliantly with purifiers, 5-6 Purifiers in a Rhino/Psyback with MC hammer, 1-2 Pyscanons, and the rest halberds is ideal. Hmmm why do I overlook those little rules? ;) Then it's off too the drawing bord with the list, maybe foodslogging with 2 big Purifier squads of 10? I love the big squad with the 4 heavy guns. Or drop Crowe for now and take 2 5/6 man strike squads and a big Purifier squad and a Brotherhood Champion? I put the Warding staves in the units for those powerweapon/fist saves I hate to take, maby only in the big squad? There are a lot of new things in my head now...Arggg! I will post my renewed list soon! thanks for the help all!! templargdt
+1 for removing warding staves, way too expensive. Yes, if it works once it's made it's points back. However, in a large squad, just tool them up to kill the opponent before the strike (Halberds.) In a small squad I could see it except that you can easily get shot to death and lose the expensive model before even using it to save a powerfist wound or what not. (Warding Stave on Librarian, however, is another story.) If you are going to run Crowe, I defintely am in the MSU (multiple small units) camp. 6 Purifiers, 2 Psycannons, 4 Halberds (maybe 1 hammer, but I wouldn't) and a Psybolt Razorback with Twin Linked Heavy bolters. 222 points I think (with no hammer) and really good. Dwars
Just a quick question... If i have a Liby to make a squad I10 with quicksilver dus it count for hammers too? I hope so that will be a nice trick to pull off with a unit of Paladins full of hammers :) To get to the rest of my army I still don't know how to use Crowe himself in the army he has nice stats and so on but footslogging him all the way with the rest of the army in transports isn't a great option and lending him a transport is going to leave a squad behind... does anyone has a guideline for me, I had all my HQ's of my other army's in a squad or on a bike so they could move with the rest of the army. thanks for all the help so far! number6
See p. 42 of the BRB. Mordrak
Hey fella welcome to the Inquisition...I personally field a draigowing army @ 1750pts, far more powerful than a lot of people give credit to! But hey feel free to check out my blog as I'm going through all the units, so hopefully it will help you to make your own choice compared to how you play rather than copying someone else's list and getting frustrated. To clarify: The model is at I10 after the casting of Quicksilver. (This might come up if you have to deal with a spell cast or something.) The model still strikes at I1 due to the TH rule. With quicksilver you have negated the bonus of Halberds and it doesn't work on Hammers so that only really leaves you with Swords of Falcions. Falcions are otherwise over priced but the bonus attack is worth while at I10. Swords are a more clever choice for me with the I10 bonus. embalancer
wouldn't it be better to MC your DH rather than putting digi weapons on it? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/232414-starting-my-grey-knights-army/#findComment-2800489 Share on other sites
Toasterfree
wouldn't it be better to MC your DH rather than putting digi weapons on it? digi weap allows you to re-roll that pesky 1. go ahead and MC it also, that way you can re-roll that miss and then you can re-roll that failed wound too. Dwars
heej all, A small update here. My army now has a full strike squad with 6 halberds, 2 hammers and 2 psycannons, a termie squad of 5 with 4 halberds, a hammer and a psycannon (magnetized so i can take it off). I also bought a dreadknight with heavy incinerator and a heavy psycannon (with magnetized sword). My army HQ will be Coteaz, he is a nice solid leader with nice psychic powers and gotta love his; I've been expecting you and Spy network special rules. I don't gonna go with a army full of Henchmen, but give him a squad of Purifiers or Purgation squad to lead and shoot of psycannons at all the enemy reserves that come in play ^_^. My army is foodslogging for now but hope I can make good use of terrain and come close fast enough for the kill. Hope you have some tips for me! Toasterfree
you will be limited to 6 troop slots, with the two that you already have that gives you 4 more.
