Do Erebus etc. think they are doing the right thing?

Just wondering, aside from the assorted greedy, possessed, insane and power hungry followers and worshippers of Chaos, does Erebus and his like genuinely believe Chaos is humanity's only hope? I know there hasn't really been a definitive answer and he is described as being power hungry by other characters, he is never portrayed as a raving lunatic. So what do you guys think drives him and others like him?

My understanding is that the Word Bearers (and maybe a few others) believe that humanity needs religion and the chaos gods to survive the horrors of the galaxy.

Of course it never hurts to be promoted to the top of the food chain after the change in management. B)

I'd say as with most space marines, the word bearers are doing whats good for the post-humans more so than whats good for humanity. space marines tend to have a general disdain for anyone under 7 feet tall, lack ofmuscle, and boat loads of fear. this is for the powerful to get more powerful.
They utterly believe that for humanity to prosper, they need the aid of the Chaos Gods. The sacrifices don't matter, they're necessary evils for the strength to survive in a hostile universe, and for knowledge of the truth, that the Gods are real, and they demand worship.
Can it not be argued that Erebus is the best character within the series thus far? If I were one of the HH authors I would be clawing to write about his twists and turns, plans and schemes. To read his background would be absolutely refreshing, heck, we may even look at him in a different light if the HH authors illuminate us

Erebus I think is a true believer, in the same way that Lorgar is. Personal power is the perk of running a religion, but I think the religion itself is what matters most to him.

Kor Phaeron, on the other hand, seems much more of a Chaos = my ticket to being the old dude who is in charge and gets all the daemonic ladies. In all honesty, I'm 99% sure that if Kor Phaeron has a moustache, he would be unable to function due to a need to twirl it all the time.
