None of the suggestions are a "bad idea", it's all down to personal preference :D And I think a burgundy cloak would look just as good as the grey one. However, if he's building Captain Mordaci Blaylock (aka. Stormbreaker), I think that the grey one would be better, as it is reminiscent of a storm cloud!
