Storm Dragons Reaver Drone

Recommended Posts

Fluffly justification:

Reaver Drones are an artifact of the grim period in the Chapter's history, when Storm Dragons were reduced to below one company's strength. They were created as a simple, yet ingenious way to weaponize servo-skulls, utilizing ancient propeller technology in favor of more complex antigrav units. Each Reaver drone is a nominally armored, hovering chassis carrying a pair of flechette launchers and two vicious blades, and piloted by an integrated servo-skull. The drones' purpose is to sow distraction and chaos in the enemy lines, or, perhaps more frequently, sacrifice itself intercepting an attack aimed at a battle-brother. If the servo-skull survived the chassis' destruction, it would disengage and quietly return to the techmarines to be mounted in another Reaver.

Reavers are still being forged in the Chapter's armories, and often accompany Siegebreaker cavalry to add weight to the Siegebreakers' already devastating charges.

Each Reaver counts as a Fenrisian Wolf, and as such is mounted on a cavalry base. The body is a RAFM Missile Drone (http://www.rafm.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=RAF&Product_Code=RAF02841&Category_Code=USXMin). I added a Servoskull from the Devastator sprue, a pair of combat blades and shortened/angled the missile launchers. The idea is that the drone would slam into something, either impaling or grabbing it with the "mandibles", and then fire the flechettes point-blank. Gruesome!

Pictures below. It looks more than a bit rough, but I'm hoping that a coat of primer and a paint job will take care of that. And yeah... I hate pewter. With all my heart.

Upgrade! I took a second look at the mini and the pictures, and decided that Reaver Drone 1.0 looked like crap. My personal credo is: "if it doesn't look good unpainted, it will look bad painted."

For the second round, I added the antennae (which came with the kit, and I stupidly forgot to stick them on), and replaced the crappy, brick-like stock missile launchers with converted pieces. The body is a SM melta bomb, the "claw tip" is the tip from the Necron gauss gun.

Reaver 1.1:

Let's just say I really fell in love with the bloodcrusher model. Fluffwise, and without going into too much rambling detail, the steeds were forged to as a part of a covert mission where some of the Storm Dragons briefly posed as Khorne Berserkers. The mission is over, but the steeds and their riders remained. They count as TWC, and, like TWC, are put on the field when something big and bad needs to be smashed, trampled or gored.
