Raving Bonkers:

Thanks for the very detailed reply! Lots of good info here...

About spraying distance: I think I am spraying from farther than 10-15 cm. Will pay attention to that today.

About PSI: as I said in a reply, I've been having luck with 30+ PSI. But it may depend on spraying technique and distance.

About spraying technique: yes, I agree that the pooling in recesses means spraying too long/too much at a single spot. I should try and use the airbrush more like I would use a spray can.

Thanks,

Retributis:

About paint thin-ness: this was the new Vallejo airbrush primer, straight from the bottle, as recommended by manufacturer. I think it might have been slightly too thick, but I don't think paint thickness/viscosity was the main problem.

About spraying too long on one spot: Yup, this was the main problem. I need to use my airbrush like a spray can.

Thanks for your help!

Latest experiment -- I love the color, but the paint is still too thick.

1) Vallejo airbrush primer (white) 30 PSI undiluted from bottle

2) Liquitex Alazarin Crimson Soft Body acrylic paint diluted 1:1 with Liquitex acrylic medium, plus a couple of drops of Liquitex Slow-Dri Fluid Retardant (applied with large paint brush as crudely and heavily as possible)
