Mr. Danvers
Well, i finally got round to working on my GC Lord models for my army and I'm a big fan of having a dreadnought as my main character. Obviously, Bjorn is the main choice for games and I have a converted model set up for him and he's a legal rule set. The next part I'm working on is my 'fluff' Lord i.e. how I actually would model and run my wolf lord in a dreadnought. My initial idea was to have essentially an IC that evolved with the storyline of my army, hence several different versions of my Wolf Lord. The start of the fluff would have him as a marine, then his interring within a dreadnought using Bjorn's entry and finally his succumbing to the Curse of the Wulfen whilst in the dreadnought. BA players will probably flame me for this, but I can't prove that I had this idea a while ago with the old mini-dex book, so I won't even try to. Now, the main thing I notice is how to turn my idea into a playable and balanced set of stats, rules and points cost to use in games (friendly obviously :)). It would be too easy to make something totally overpowered, but I'm more into a good game with my opponent than whitewashing them. Also, avoiding the raging accusations of being greedy with taking stuff from the BA codex would be nice, but that will happen regardless. It's my own fault for not getting round to it in the end really, but hey ho nevermind. Hence I turn to B&C to thrown a few ideas about and see what other suggestions you guys can make or what advice you may have. I was planning on building upon the rules of Bjorn to design this character, as it seemed the most fitting. Stats: Bjorn's a fair start as he is a Wolf Lord in a dreadnought already. The only thing I might change is bumping his I value to 4 to represent the fact that he's basically going mental in a box and won't be as sluggish as a normal dreadnought thats been awoken. To counteract that increase, maybe a drop in S from 7 to 6 to balance him out. Armament: I was planning on having him as a close combat dreadnought, so two CC weapons, modelled with the blood talon parts of the furioso as wolf claws. I'd just run them as a pair of no-save weapons with no boosts to S or any re-rolls on wounds etc. I also figured that if he was designed for close range, the heavy flamer and melta gun options under the arms was probably the best ideas, but I wasn't sure. Special rules: This is the part I'm quite undecided with at the moment. For instance, would a D6+1 attacks style effect from MotW be a little too mental on a dread or not? Along with random attacks, I'd probably have him subject to the Rage rule as I think it fits pretty well. He would lose Ancient Tactician, as it would make no sense whatsoever. I feel that the Living Relic rule is perfect to keep, as it covers how the army would fight to recover their lord if he fell in battle. Also, I really like this rule anyway and it's a pretty hefty disadvantage if you don't watch out. Then it's onto the Ward of the primarch rule. Now, I'd say take this out, because it is specifically designed for Bjorn and his story. The only other ideas I came up with as a replacement is a rule from the old Moriar entry where he ignores Shaken and Stunned on the damage table due to the rage or having a 5+ based upon the fact that the wulfen will drive him to carry on fighting regardless of his wounds, which seems to be pretty accurate when you read novels about its description. I figured a vehicle ripping rule would make sense, with saying he gets 2D6+S pen against vehicles in CC, but that might make him too strong. Finally, Bjorn has Saga of Majesty, which I don't think is applicable for a wulfen in a dreadnought. The only other Sagas I think that could replace it are Warrior Born or Beastslayer. Warrior Born is definitely getting into the unbalanced catagory if paired with a random number of attacks in CC, but Beastslayer seems a little bit pointless, as a dreadnought against another is hardly as epic as a single marine bringing one down himself. Any input would be great. I'm just happy to be finally working on this guy after too long :P. Cheers in advance. dswanick
Go simple. This is the Wolf-marked dreadnought I field in Apocalypse games : http://i46.tinypic.com/2nktbpd.jpg which "counts-as" a Blood Angels Furioso dreadnought with Blood Claws. Simple, straight-forward, perfectly legal in Apocalypse and not an unreasonable choice in a friendly, non-Apoc game. Schertenleib
I agree with dswanick. This would be the simplest way to go. The other thought might be a "counts as" Chaos Dread using the insanity chart. Fluffwise though... I don't really think it fits well. Dreadnought are all under the Great Wolf's Company and would not be leading a GC anyway. As soon as a Wolf Lord would be injured badly enough to be entombed in the Dread the Wolf Guard would elect a new Wolf Lord. Otherwise Bjorn would still be the Great Wolf and Logan never would have advanced. Bottom line though....it's your army do as you want. Have fun! ^_^ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/232531-dreadnought-ic-musings-motw-style/#findComment-2797125 Share on other sites
Mr. Danvers
That Apoc suggestion is a good idea. I've not played an Apoc game, so didn't realise that it worked like that. As you said as well, easiest rules set. I didn't think about the whole re-elect idea either :S. I'll just have to tweak my fluff a bit for it to make sense. Well, it would make sense that a new Lord would be voted. Cheers guys. Mr. Danvers
WIP update: Started making the dread today and here's the current progress: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v236/jaymz2k4/IMAG0102.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v236/jaymz2k4/IMAG0101.jpg Based upon that lovely Khorne dreadnought from the 2005 GD in Baltimore(?). He stands a bit funny on the base, as there's a pin running through his foot and the base, but he's not glued down yet. Neither of the arms are glued either, so that I can detach them for painting and weapon destroyed results. Still working on being able to magnetize the melta gun and heavy flamer under the arms, but not sure how to do it at the moment.
