Green Devils
First, the manager of our store isn't the easiest to get help from for anything (many people have complained to GW). In fact, most of us have stopped going there except to get additional paint or an occasional model because the store atmosphere is so bad. As a result, we've ended up trying to figure everything out on our own and I'm a bit tired of it. So if anyone can offer any advice, you'd make me, my friends, and my space marines very happy. 1. exactly how do you dilute paint/get it ready to put on the model? I hear people at my store say 2:1, but noone ever says if thats 2 parts 1 to one part paint (or vice versa), or even how to measure it or how best to do it. 2. And how do i use an airbrush? (A friend gave me a testors airbrush for my brithday back in march). I've got a bunch of rhinos and a few drop pods to paint. 3. Can Testors paint be used on w40k models? I only ask cause our store is a 40 minute drive, and theres a hobby lobby nearly across the street from my house. This would leave MUCH more time to playing/painting when all my friends meet up. And, if it can be used, does anyone have a chart or list of "approximate" colors? Any help could be appreciated. Sorry if I sound agitated, I've just been trying to improve my painting skills for some time, and compared to a large number of useless tutorials on youtube, and the current state of our store, I'm a bit upset. Urb
There are a few ways to mix paint but here's the most basic I know. Materials 1. Cup of clean water. 2. Ceramic plate or anything non porus 3. Brush. 4. Acrylic paint. 5. Paper towel. Method 1. Dip brush in the paint stopping before the ferrel. 2. Wipe onto the plate trying to get as much paint off the brush in a small puddle. 3. Dip the brush into the clean water as much as you did with paint. 4. Swirl the brush in the paint on the plate. 5. Wipe the bush on the paper towl. 6. Dip the brush in your paint and off you go. That should give you a reasonable mixture of water to paint to base a model. You may need to redip for more water or paint but you will get a feel for it. It's important to wipe the brush before painting though. You only want to load the brush with the amount of paint you want to use. After mixing there typically too much paint on the brush. Would help to have a second cup of water just for cleaning your brush. Hope that helps. Firedrake Cordova
Basically, what Urb said. B) Although, as an alternative to the ceramic tile, you could use a "wet palette" (stops the paint drying out - a quick Google should help you). As for thinning ... aim for the consistency of semi-skimmed milk - it'll mean you need more coats, but you're unlikely to obscure details, etc. It's important not to let the paint get into the ferrule (metal bit near the bristles), as it'll dry up there and cause the bristles to splay out. I would recommend a cleaning product, such as "The Masters". Marshall_Brant
I'd add two cups of clear water. One for metallics and one for acrylic. It's to prevent glittery black. Testors is an oil based paint (gw is water based) so you would need paint thinner to clean your brushes, which I would suggest not using gw brushes or any water based paint brushes with oil based, because it might damage the brush. Also testors is a gloss paint (shiny everywhere) and is almost impossible to remove bar brake fluid (which softens the plastic badly). I hate mixing paints, period. I may get it right once but I'd be damned to do it a second time. As it is I end up wasting paint. Layering and dry brushing work for me. Tanhausen
1. exactly how do you dilute paint/get it ready to put on the model? Basically I do 1 part paint: 3 parts water...but it depends on the paint condition and a few factors. Thumb rule: you should at least 2 coats of paint to get the pretended colour. If one coat covers solid... you're probably too thick 2. And how do i use an airbrush? (A friend gave me a testors airbrush for my brithday back in march). I've got a bunch of rhinos and a few drop pods to paint. Is it and airbrush or a spraygun? Meaning... is it just a button/trigger that allows air to go through or can you actually regulate how much paint goes out (that would be a double action airbrush). Airbrush is thought to be the ultimate tool... and it helps but doesn't solve your problems. Besides, it gets frustrating when thinning paints, and GW ain't the best for airbrush. The compressor is an important factor...run away from air cans. From what you post... I'd stay away from the AB right now or you'll end up throwing it out the window ;) 3. Don't know about testors... sorry :P Hope it helps! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/232627-help-with-paint/#findComment-2799131 Share on other sites
Green Devils
this really helps, I'm gonna try some of this today. Also, it says Air Airbrush. It uses cans of air, and little vials. Thing is, it'll take me a REALLY long time to paint my rhinos and drop-pods if I don't use the airbrush (I haven't touched them at all yet). I've got 4-5 rhinos, a land raider, and 3 drop-pods to prime and paint. Also, What do you guys think: Prime/paint before assembly, or after? or something else? Urb
Take a look over at youtube. Some great tutorials showing how to paint all things big and small 40k. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/232627-help-with-paint/#findComment-2799381 Share on other sites
striker8
I think it's all been covered but need to add one thing. No matter what any one says there is no set ratio/method that works for everything. Anything you read or people tell you should be viewed as a guide only. You will have to do a bit of personal learning to figure out what works for you and the techniques and tools you use.
