Why play Space Wolves?

In short everything.

 

I have played Spacewolves before there was a codex for them.

 

We have the best tactical squad in the game. Not nearly as awesome as before. But it stillhas alot of tweeking ability. Grey Hunters win games. Our Wolf Gaurd are awesome. And you can use them as troops with Logan. Which I do to make my Old SpaceWolf list. It's as mean and can have even more bells and whistles.

 

I like Blood Angels. But I can own the with Wolves and have for years. Blood Angels either rely on the Furocious Charge or now they Dread Spam for wins. But if you have some skill you can take away the charge and pop dreads pretty easy.

I know a lot of people choose an army first for aesthetics, but that aside, what rules or special units compel people to play Space Wolves?

 

I'm currently a BA player and was just wanting to know what makes your chapter special to play with.

Probably the same reasons if not more why you choose your BA army in the first place.

1. Chapter structure. We're built like clans, not regiments. IMO it builds a camaraderie within packs (and companies), rather than a disciplined dependency within squads. Plus, "packs" sounds way more awesome than "squads". Also, each Chapter is self-sufficient. Based on my knowledge of standard SM (Ultra) structure, they have footslogging companies, special veteran companies, tank companies, dreadnought companies, scout companies, etc. Wolves are a pure blend of everything.. with a slight emphasis in one direction or another depending on the Wolf Lord.

 

2. This might cause some sparks, but I can't stand the religious aspect built around most other Chapters. SWs are more spiritual, totemic, primal. Done away with gold-lined churches and jewel-crusted silver ornaments. They're gritty and earthy.

 

3. Wolves. Need I say more?

There are many cool Space Wolf units but something that I dont often hear mentioned is their Dreadnoughts. Now all dreadnoughts are revered soldiers but in the Space Wolves they are much more like ancestors brought back to life. It would be like your grandfathers grandfathers grandfather who fought in the Civil War coming back to life to fight with you in Iraq. These are literally ghosts brought back to life when they are needed most. I find that cool.

 

Another one would be Wolf Scouts. I am much more drawn to the idea of seasoned veterans who operate behind enemy lines using their experience and cunning to sever threads then the thought of new recruits trying to do the same things. It just seems more special ops then other SM chapters.

I'd appreciate someone hunting back in the archives to rustle up a copy of the rather long document I offered to the last whelp who asked this question. I'm afraid I can't right now, as I'm in the middle of a game as we speak. It'd be much obliged. September 2009, I think, or around that time.
in my case it was not a single unit, but the fluff. in fact i always shunned the space wolves because of the baby blue colour sheme. but then i started reading the 3rd edition dex, the fluff in it, and immediatly knew this was the one army. never played another army or even felt the desire to play another army ever since.

The Wolves hunt as a true pack.

 

You have the runners to terrify and harrass the foe, wearing them out, these are our Wolf Scouts, Swift Claws and Sky Claws. Then we have the wolves left for the killing blows, these are the Long Fangs, Grey Hunters and Wolf Guard.

 

Space Wolves are also anti-authoritarian, you have to earn their respect, whether you are a humble Fenrisian mortal or one of the high lords of Terra, yet despite this the Wolves are and have always been one of the most loyal Legions and Chapters in existence.

 

There's the mentality as well, you just feel like you fit in. If you collect Space Wolves you ARE a Space Wolf, not a Space Wolf player. We are pack brothers one and all.

To add to this, my very first GW plastic box was the old Grey Hunter box. Sadly, I didnt paint them up as Space Wolves (just thought the baby blue warriors were an example on the front). That and not knowing any fluff, I just grabbed some paints and brushes with em and went home and started building. After I started to read fluff and such, I used them a bit as regular Space Marines then Chaos, but those wolfy bits always had me thinking. Then I picked up the Ragnar books and that, along with catching wind that they were being redone with new models and units, and more fluff, was what really did it for me. Since then I havent touched another army and not sure when I will. Everytime I get that, "oooh, that's shiny" feel, all I have to do is look over at my wolves and I instantly go, "Naaah" B)

What Relgion are you referencing for other chapters? Most do not believe in the Imperial Creed, and like us, venerate the Emperor as the best butt kicking aspect of mankind ever to breathe life, but do not see him as god.

because they are awesome ...seriously, wulfen ,wolf lords,long fangs......all our units have awesome names, we have amazing fluff , the other players are great people. whats not to love

Good thing, too! I love the wolves cause of the whole pack feel and the constant pushing to outdo your packmates, not like the other chapters who aren't all about the glory but just the strict codex mindset that you have to be a robot like killing machine devoid of all personality and character. And, because no one else will charge into battle riding the back of a wolf that is as big, if not bigger, then you. GO THUNDERWOLVES!

Cool looking units, good rules, and a bigger emphasis on close combat.

 

I play Eldar and Tau as well, and I was looking for an army that had a bit more oomph in close combat without giving up the shooting that I was used to. That combined with the individuality of each model in a Space Wolf army, really intrigued me. I could never really do a horde army, because I get really tired of painting the same thing over and over, so Space Wolves let me do some fun conversion work and make each model unique.

The fluff, the dark grey colour scheme and not the baby blue, the noble savage, the heroic deeds and sagas of countless heroes who have fought and died as true warriors of the Allfather, Logan Grimnar and his reaction after the first battle for Armageddon and did i mention the fluff?

 

Plus the fact that we stick two fingers up at the Codex Astartes, we dont need a book to tell us how to wage war!!!

Two reasons, You enjoy the fluff built up over the years, you want to play one of the most powerful/boardline broken army's out there.

This gets a Tim taylor awoooii? Granted your impression could still be set by the initial release of our 5e codex, but with the current codex creep our book is balanced and far from borderline broken.

 

I play space wolves because it's what Chuck Noris would have wanted. But really, the fluff, the fury and the Celtic Norse pride my family holds.
