The Keeler Image

Recommended Posts

Stoked. Perhaps relating to Euphrati Keeler of Horus Heresy fame? Perhaps a picture taken of Horus?

Quite likely; Abnett's always had a fondness for tying his books together, (minor characters who show up in Eisenhorn/Ravenor and Gaunt's Ghosts, Enuncia in Prospero Burns, etc.) so it would fit. In fact, didn't Keeler take an image of Horus and the Mournival in Horus Rising that got mentioned several times for being a very good picture? Sounds like possible foreshadowing to me...

Abbnet is also meant to be writing the conclusion to eisenhorn and ravenor with a 3rd series that will also include bequins fate.

As far I'm aware, the last we heard about that was in 2009, and it hasn't shown up yet. Then again, this might be an indication that he'll finally be getting back to Eisenhorn and Ravenor soon.

Am I the only one who doesn't want Eisenhorn brought back into the spotlight? I think the state of that story was fine as it is, because what made me enjoy that story so much, and what makes it one of the very few Black Library books to actually be a good book in general, not just relative to Black Library's 'standards', is how well it told the story of Eisenhorn's fall. It takes an incredible feat of authorship to write a character's descent into damnation so subtly that even the reader doesn't notice it until it is far too late, but having every step down that path be clear in retrospect. I think it was entirely appropriate for the book to end where it did; Eisenhorn realising that he has finally gone all the way the moment the story cuts out. Having him around in the occasional mention in other works is good, because it keeps that 'No, Gregor, you are the Antagonists' feel that was the ending's great strength. Anything more, and especially anything from his perspective, would just lessen the rest of the material. That's too great a price to pay to make a new Eisenhorn story, even if it's as well or better-written, worthwhile. And I daresay it won't be as good, as Abnett's BL writing in general seems to be of a somewhat lower standard than he achieved in Eisenhorn. It's a skill a good writer needs to have to be able to identify which works he can replicate and which works were genuinely inspired and are not representative.

I know what you mean but the last few things I've read by him have been HH where he is somewhat limited in scope. Maybe it won't be like this when it's his own stuff.

I do think he works a bit better outside of the Horus Heresy series where he has a bit more room for creative license; Gaunt's Ghosts is still going strong after all.

Except I doubt his 3rd trilogy will be from Gregor's perspective. Ravenor wasn't. IIRC, he mentioned in the foreword of the Ravenor Omnibus that the title of the 3rd Omnibus would likely be Bequin. To me, this says that A: she gets thawed out, and B: she BECOMES AN INQUISITOR. And since she's been in stasis, it can be any number of years after the ending of Ravenor (in which we know she's still frozen). So, we can assume Gideon will be alive, but tangental at best (Just like Gregor was) and that Bequin will be struggling against something dangerous that ties back to her past working for Gregor. Cherubael, perhaps? Who better than a Nul to fight a daemonhost? And if Cherubael needs to be taken down, who's got his leash now? What happened to Gregor? The plot thickens...

Well, those are my thoughts, anyway.
