Predator layouts

Hey battle brothers, just picked up 2 predators for a good price and wondering what layout you guys would run. I know the "dakka" pred is auto cannon heavy bolters. I've seen a lot of that floating around but just wondering what you guys run and why. This is of course leaning towards a more mech list as DOA tank get skunked first turn shooting.

The only variant that is never used is the Tri-lascannon. 180 points is just two much for a vehicle with a side armor of 11.

But just about every other layout works. The king is the Autocannon/Lascannons Pred, which boasts the best anti-transport combination of weapons, while still being reasonably priced. The Dakka pred is all about value, since it can put out a lot of shots for only 100 points (though, personally, I'd take a Baal over that any day). The TL Lascannon turret can be used with no sponsons. Back when S5 was defensive, the heavy bolters worked well with it, but now, you're better off without them (AV 13, TL-Lascannon, and the ability to move 12" and shoot justify the price tag).

Autolas is pretty okay for BA, since it's more mobile than the SM counterpart and is competing/complementing different units. Dakka is actually much less useful to BA, as it has to fight with the Rifleman Dread in HS and is more expensive than the codex version. Those are really the only two setups of any particular quality, in my opinion. Trilas is too expensive, any variant without sponsons is wasting your time, and HB/Las is just confused.

Man the trilas pred is taking a beating here.

I'll stick my neck out there and say I use a trilas pred a lot in my lists. Complimented by lasbacks and other heavy support you can have a list that puts out a ridiculous amount of lascannon shots. Personally I'm a fan of it. Nothing like trying to shoot something that's AV14 because thats the only real target you have only to feel gipped because you cant even use your turret against it. Also while more expensive, the tllc is a significantly better anti light armor gun than the autocannon, penning armor 12 with double the chance of an autocannon. Also I really appreciate the TLLC's extra usefulness at killing MCs and the like, which the autocannon is significantly worse at, having a worse ap value. I face a few tyranid players and the like with MCs and that pred puts holes in them but than anything but a stormraven.

It's great at what it does, I don't think anyone is contesting that. The problem is just that it's very expensive and can only engage one unit at the time. If predators could buy PotMS It would probably be more popular.

The typical BA list has a lot of fast or deep striking meltas, scouting assault cannons, and ways to deal with ranged specialists like long fangs. Because of that it's hard to justify the cost of a tri-las pred when you take tons of TLLC razorbacks instead. In a pure stand and shoot force the AV13 would be well worth it, but as BA is typically played in a more aggressive manner it's better to go for target saturation.

well i'd say that the army i was planning originally was a DOA but after seeing my buddy with guard I kind of wanted MORE DAKKA!! That comes with the armor it's mounted on so anyways yeah running 2 preds with a bunch of razors will give me more than enough shots to take out mech. Also the wording for the pred says you can take a stormbolter and/or a hunterkiller for XX points. Is that a legal thing to take them both or was that just something overlooked and "cheese"?

It's as intended and perfectly legal. Kit out any vehicle to your hearts content.

Double stormbolters on rhinos (and on vindicators if you use them) and HK missiles on razorbacks or whirlwinds are my favorites when I have points to spare.
