Sven_Bloodhowl
Hey guys, just popping over fromt the wolves forum to ask a question for my friend. He's looking to get into the hobby and really likes the look of the Grey Knights, the thing is he really likes the idea of a fast reactionary force. You know everything mounted in Stormravens or deep-striking into the heart of the enemy. Having a look through the armylist forum all i mainly see is either psyback spam, coteaz builds or draigowing, my question is simply whether his idea for a list is viable? Please note this isn't meant to be a WAAC army and will mainly be facing of against Space Wolves and Chaos. Thanks in advance for any help. Inquisitor Fox
I believe there are FAR more viable builds with this Codex than just those three. Honestly, I don't think there's really a bad approach. Myself, I'm going with two Inquisitorial HQs (non-named), then a selection of deep striking units who will come in as needed, eventually with a Storm Raven and the like. I say tell him go for it, it's very viable as psycannons, vehicle mounted weaponry and Dreads are very possible. He'll just have to pick where and when he strikes, and needs to leave no survivors to swamp him. nurglez
It all depends on what he means by viable. For me a list works best if it is one you know and like, hence my 1500 point nurgle chaos army has 1 vindicator and 1 landraider (both units that the net says should be taken in pairs or not at all). I played renegade logan wing because I love terminators, and I now play draigo wing because I really love terminators (especially 2 wound ones :) ). I'm pretty sure a storm raven heavy list will work, A few fast vehicles with teleporter homers flying round, while you deepstrike stuff down where and when you need. I'd suggest either a grand master or inquisitor with psychic communion for 1 hq, and a good second hq is a libby. Just because a storm raven can carry a dread doesn't mean you have to take one (although, when ever I write a list with a storm raven I have to put a dread in as well...). Storm raven's and dread's are a good way of getting weapons that grey knights usually lack, like lascannons, melta and plasma. I still haven't used my storm raven yet, mainly because at 1500 and 2000 points I have no vehicles (due to being a draigo wing army) and if I add a fast armour 12 vehicle it will be the only thing in my list with an armour value and I expect it to get shot down rather quickly... Sven_Bloodhowl
Hey guys thanks for the replies. While i also agree that the Grey Knights 'dex has a lot more variety than the 3 lists mentioned, it is very difficult to find any advice on armies that aren't the main 3. As to what i mean by viable, i know he was planning on using 2 TLLC/TLMM Stormravens each carrying a MM/HF Ven.Dread and GKSS with 2xPsycannon and Hammer backed up by teleporting termies and interceptors. Is this a list capable of winning games? Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/232951-storm-ravens-and-melta-dreads/#findComment-2803408 Share on other sites
nurglez
I feel that technically, any list is capable of winning. As the game depends on so many variables it is hard to say. For example, out of my first 5 games with logan wing, I lost 4 of them. But I stuck with it and racked up a decent win ratio (just check my sig heh). I feel a dual storm raven list can do well, however it might require some practice to figure out how it will work, and how to best use each unit. It may turn out that the best way of using this list is different to how your friend wants to play it...
