Chaos Renegades

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for any comments or criticism, as well as encouragement, to get my Chaos Renegades finished. This motley assortment is all the troops I have left to paint for a 1500 point list.

All of these are second hand models and were stripped with Simple Green and an old toothbrush. I realize the undercoat could be smoother in places but it's the best I could do since the plastic components were starting to soften more than I was comfortable with. None of them are new by any stretch and most of the core components are probably 10-20 years old. There's a mix of armor types and weapons, but that's why they're renegades, not First Legions. The warband is supposed to be the Oracles of Change, basically a Black Legion style scheme in red.

Here's a basic trooper that's more or less done, except the base (and anything terrible that I haven't noticed!)

Icon Bearer (80+% done - I think the banner might need something more)

The rest - these are about 50% finished

Let me know what you think.

I think they look pretty cool. The only thing I would recommend is to perhaps add a wash to the metal parts. Loving the highlighting on the power fist. I too also know what it's like to get past the last hurdle and finish an army so keep at it and be proud when it's on the battlefield killing the Emperor's Lapdogs and deluded followers  :P

Wow - thanks for the quick and positive responses. I guess I'd better get some progress made soon.

@ Lord Antares:

The short answer is that it's a blade, to help represent the equipment Chaos Marines have. The longer answer is that it comes from the underside of a 2nd ed. Reaper Autocannon. I cut it off then added an arrow with rivets to the area where I made the cut.

Sometimes I think it looks cool, and sometimes, I think it looks silly. I might have gotten a little carried away with the arrow theme, but I also get a lot of questions about whether my army is a Blood Angels force.

@ Wulfen: I see the blade as something scavenged and reshaped, sorta like a piece from the bitz box...

Not the greatest pictures, but basically, I've made substantive progress on another trooper. I know he needs a pack and am waiting on lower humidity to prime some.

It's not just me that has a problem with humidity then!

This guy is looking good as well, and I love that model: what is it/when was it around?

Keep it up Sarge, these are going to look good when they're all done ;)

I think it does depend somewhat on the spray - I've had good luck with Army Painter primer recently - but I've also had problems with seemly good primer on humid, hot days (80+ degrees F, 70%+ humidity) and I've got plenty of other stuff to work on so why risk having to strip something?

As far as the model, it is just an old blister pack chaos marine. There is no conversion work on it except pinning the arms. It was contemporary to Codex Chaos (2nd Ed.) so it was probably released around 1996. Be warned though, it's a metal torso/legs with plastic arms, gun and pack, and the plastic parts seem to break off relatively easily unless the plastic is pinned.

Made a bit more progress over the last couple days:

My wife really hates this Chaos Icon, which might mean it came out well?

This trooper is one of my favorite of the old models. It's very simple but for some reason it looks very cool. It's also pretty obvious that the Assault on Black Reach and other later models drew pretty heavily on this model/pose.

Seven more to go....(and two back packs)

Thanks (belatedly) for the compliments and the feedback.

Work has taken it out of me this week and my painting pace has fallen off a little. Here's all that I've managed this week:

I've just started the freehand on the one on the left, the other two need some clean up around the freehand to make the lines look crisper.

The one is more or less done, aside from clean up and gluing his pack on (you can see it in the lower right corner above).

Four more after these guys....

Really cool, you've pulled off the scattering of arrows/chaos symbols nicely. Lots of character here.

I've been thinking of almost the exact same idea for about a month now to get back into the hobby; an Oracles of Change warband based on older models. I'm planning on using some really old stuff too, with a few rogue trader conversions mixed in amongst it all, and was going to approach them as a mutation-heavy, Tzeentch-aligned force. Really looking forward to seeing what else you come up with here, hopefully I can get up the beginnings of my stuff soon too

Good luck and watched!

Thanks for the comments, Draakur, and good luck with your force! I've got a couple really old models that I haven't painted yet and a very old Tzeentch Greater Daemon converted into a Prince.

There's also some terminators I've hacked up and converted into Obliterators - I can link if you're interested, or they can be found in my blog.

Most of my force is pretty basically assembled and what conversions I've done were pretty basic. I do like the mutation idea (and the look of the possessed models), so I might mess with that down the road. Everything here is all salvaged parts, which I figured was fitting for a Renegade force.

As far as the Tzeentch alignment, I haven't messed with it on the table top due to the somewhat limited returns - the save is sadly not that helpful and the cost is pretty high. I'm thinking of trying it against Grey Knights maybe - a lot of power weapons.
