Gulag
Hello all, First time DIY poster, second post overall on the B&C. I've been fiddling about with the painter and have worked up a few color schemes for DIY chapters and some accompanying fluff. I just need a little help choosing which to start with for a proper IA. I have seen the Guide to DIY'ing and am reviewing the BBCodes so I think I can put one together. List of DIY color schemes and chapters with gene-seed origin: http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2011/178/9/1/incarnadine_horde_by_gulag285-d3k81aw.jpg Incarnadine Horde - White Scars by way of the Rampagers or Iron Talons Interesting because: Fleet-based, use of Gland War Implant, inspired by Mamluks http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2011/178/f/1/atomic_scions_by_gulag285-d3k81ho.jpg Atomic Scions - Salamanders Interesting because their homeworld is Fallout/Mad Max because of nuclear war, inspired by Fallout games http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2011/178/9/8/jade_talons_by_gulag285-d3k81sw.jpg Jade Talons - Ultramarines by way of Silver Skulls (presumed) Interesting because of assumed tribal practices and some minor codex deviations, inspired by headhunters http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2011/178/8/4/polar_knights_by_gulag285-d3k82bb.jpg Polar Knights - Unknown Cursed 21st Founding Chapter whose Gene-seed has degraded to such a degree that they are banned from taking recruits and the chapter is now embarked on a suicide campaign for redemption Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/233099-diy-help/ Share on other sites
Dominicus
I really like the Polar Knights; dying Chapter, forced to fight and die knowing they will have no replacements. But be sure to include what went wrong with their gene-seed. It has to be pretty bad to be banned from taking on new recruits, such as their skin deteriorating when they reach a certain age, or their bodies deforming horribly as the age, not just an implant problem. Best of luck! And welcome to the Liber! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/233099-diy-help/#findComment-2804857 Share on other sites

Sigismund Himself
Welcome to the B&C and to the Liber ;) Atomic Scions sounds like it has a truck-load of potential. There really aren't enough video-game themed chapters... My memory has gone hazy on the Gland Warrriors' alterations, could you tell us what they were? Paradill
The Atomic Scions are begging to be Imperial Fists successors.. Polar Knights get my vote, though due to the lameness of the name generator, please, please change their name. Polar Knights sounds like a power rangers spin off.. An unsuccessful one at that. Reyner
Atomic Scions sound interesting. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/233099-diy-help/#findComment-2804954 Share on other sites
Octavulg
I like the scheme on the Jade Talons the best (though would seriously recommend not having the feet be alternate colors. Trust me on this). The Atomic Scions could be interesting, as could the Polar Knights. thade
I'm a bigger fan of the Polar Knights; they look like they'd be fun to paint. Meanwhile, the Atomic Scions look like a nightmare to paint because 1. black is very hard to do well and will covertly nerf your painting scores, especially if you just leave it primed; and 2. yellow is - by far - the hardest color to work with. Dozens upon dozens of washes with long drying periods between to get a consistent, smooth, non-gobbed yellow. I wouldn't wish that paint scheme on anybody. I also like the name "Polar Knights"; you could do a lot with that, thematically. Reminds me of Mechwarrior and the old snow campaigns with Clan Snow Raven. Gulag
Thanks to everyone for all of the welcomes and replies, both are much appreciated! Atomic Scions sounds like it has a truck-load of potential. There really aren't enough video-game themed chapters... Thanks ;) to be honest its equal parts Fallout, Mad Max and Borderlands. My memory has gone hazy on the Gland Warrriors' alterations, could you tell us what they were? "Gland Warriors"The Inquisitor rulebook provides information on the forgeworld of Dantis III, which was invaded by Tyranids. Imperial Guard regiments from the planet of Lostok were drafted and altered by the Tech-Priests in order to fight on Dantis III's surface. These modifications included many organs and drug-secreting glands that boosted their combat abilities and their aggressiveness. Although only three 'Gland Warriors' survived the combat, perhaps a Magos Biologis has decided to augment a Space Marine Chapter with similar glands? In a sense, it's no different to the implants Angron and the World Eaters used to use. Perhaps these implants make your Marines aggressive berzerkers. Or perhaps they interact badly with the already delicate balance in the Space Marines' biology, causing organs to fail and a catastrophic reaction... My take on the Gland War Implants isn't so severe as the World Eaters skull-spike as the implants were originally geared for humans and Astartes have the oolitic kidney as well. The Atomic Scions are begging to be Imperial Fists successors.. I'd thought about that but just picked the Salamanders out of the blue. If you've got any reasoning as to why they should be sons of Dorn I'd be glad to hear it. Polar Knights get my vote, though due to the lameness of the name generator, please, please change their name. Polar Knights sounds like a power rangers spin off.. An unsuccessful one at that. Yeah, obvious name generator name is obvious. The name came hand in hand with the paint scheme though, so I'd need a new name to replace Polar Knights that still fits the black & white quartering with alternating trim. I like the scheme on the Jade Talons the best (though would seriously recommend not having the feet be alternate colors. Trust me on this). Why do you say that? thade
White is also quite a nightmare though. You know, this is true, but there are a lot of white elements in my list (shoulder plates, melee vet helmets, dreadnought shoulders) and I've got it down to a science; I even paint it up from black (codex grey coat, fortress grey coat, multiple white washes). Yellow is at least twice as hard. Still, you're right. Instead of white, possibly Space Wolf Grey, with highlights as the brighter, more wintery blues. Octavulg
It makes the scheme seem incredibly busy and draws people's attention to the feet. Both are bad things. Same goes for the Polar Knights, obviously. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/233099-diy-help/#findComment-2805153 Share on other sites
Gulag
Also, painting is a secondary concern at the moment - I've not mastered it yet though I'm working on getting some help from a few local players who have decent collections. Same goes for the Polar Knights, obviously. Fair enough. Would you recommend making each of the feet & greaves the same color or making both lower legs the same color? Reyner
I would make the Polar Knights pure half n half, much easier for you to paint and might look a bit better. Octavulg
Feet and greaves the same color. I love me quartered schemes, don't get me wrong. Gulag
Polar Knights it is. I'm going to tweak their paint scheme a little and see which one turns out best and then we're off to the races. Not to worry though, with the time i have on my hands an Atomic Scions IA is inevitable. Gulag
The two new tweaks for the Polar Knights paint job. I did switch to the half and half scheme, mostly due to not wanting to confuse the PKs with the Sons of Malice. Shinzaren
Suicide Campaigns never made any sort of sense to me. I can't behind the idea of wasting the finest warriors humanity has ever produced, not to mention wasting the vast amount of time, money, effort, energy, equipment, and armaments that a Space Marine chapter requires. Also, I very much enjoy the post-apocalyptic idea for the Atomic Scions. Also, I very much enjoy the post-apocalyptic idea for the Atomic Scions. The Polar Knights are on the suicide campaign because they've fallen from the perfection of the Astartes and will either be destroyed by the Ordo Hereticus or by their own degenerating genetics. It doesn't help that the degeneration has reached the point where the Traitor Marines are prettier to look at after the Knights take off their helmets. Better to die doing some good for the Imperium and maybe be remembered honorably than to be utterly destroyed and wiped from Imperial records.
