Vanguard Vet Finecast - what is this detail?

Recommended Posts

I just picked up a box of Finecast Vanguard Veterans and need help identifying a detail...

Yes, I know I should have been wary and waited until the production "issues" had (mostly) sorted themselves out. But I consider myself an above average modeler and pride myself in working around pretty much any defect. However, one of the models has a very strange detail that I simply cannot identify.

The specific model is this one.

What I want to know is, what exactly is this:

Does anyone have a photo of what this should look like from the side?

Thanks in advance.

Ah, that's the Russian Vanguard Veteran, Sergeant Hujanikabolokoff.

Seriously, that looks like he lopped off someone's... ehm... and kept them as a trophy. It doesn't look like any grenade or a pouch I've ever seen on an SM model...

Its obviously a health potion...

I always thought you were a funny guy, DV8. This just proves it. :)

I think the main thing I am asking is, can someone who already has the metal version of these post a pic of the area in question from the side. On the "finecast" (resin) version, there is a giant sprue/vent post anchored right above and behind, which has obliterated a good portion of the original detail. As such, I need to whittle it down into something that resembles what it was originally.

A few years back, I asked some of the staff what something similer on Ahriman, Ragnar and most of the old metal space wolves was, that was the reply I got, because, well, it does kinda look like that, but surly marines would not actually do that, right?

With Ahriman, it could be some dust, or bits for a spell, on rune priests it could be some runes, not sure what it could be on others, lucky charms?

Keep the ideas coming, guys! I'm going to put in another idea.

It's a "glass" vial of "sacred oils." Now, why a Space Marine in Ceramite & Metal armour, with a Jump Pack is carrying a GLASS vial is beyond me.

I ended up simply cutting it off and carving the region up to represent the actual armour. I also ended up removing his helmet/head and bored a hole half way into the chest because of how miscast & lopsided his head was. It's going to be replaced by a Chapterhouse Studios resin head. I'm also going to need to partially re-sculpt the upper-right leg due to mold-slip. Oh well.

So far, there are only two things I like about the new Fincast stuff. 1) it's light. 2) it cuts really easy. Otherwise, it's horrible. I've purchased a LOT of resin miniatures from a lot of different manufacturers, and I've never seen this many air bubbles, voids and miscast details from a production model. Granted, this is the worst of the bunch, but still. It never should have shipped.

The Marine in question is obviously a Gamer, and he is carrying his Dice Bag.

It's a vial with a wax seal on the side, strangely reminiscent of this kind of cruet stand.

Probably for the after battle salad?

But looking at the pictures of the squad, I think he isn't the only one carrying one. At least the mk6 beakie marine has one as well.

So Dice-Bag might be a viable theory.

This looks more like a bong

Its such a shame the 'finecast' is seeming to appear with so many defects...addmitedly some of it can be corrected more so than metal, but so far I've been rather disappointed with the standard that GW is releasing these models, if i'd gotten one that bad i'd take it back and demand another...they're expensive so theres a good reason they should be good quality rather than some damaged stock..

As for the item.....its looking rather obscure, though im liking the idea of a pepper grinder! For after battle eating...perhaps to flavour their asphalt?

Its obviously a health potion...

i have that model in metal and it looks identical to what you see in that pic. its just some weird bulby thing with a slender handle on it going up to his belt.
