Draigo Wing vs Angel's Sanguine

Last Friday I played RebG's Angel's Sanguine with my Draigo Wing at GW plaza. Now he usually plays a jump pack assault marine heavy list, with a storm raven carrying a dread of some type and a decent assault squad, but today he was trying something different...

I forgot to bring my camera, however I did bring my lovely new smart phone that I totally love, and it actually has a semi decent camera on it, so I took pictures of our deployment and after each turn :P

 

My list:

Draigo

5 pallies (sword, MC halberd, halberd, hammer psycannon, halberd psycannon)

10 pallies (hammer, sword, falchions, MC halberd, 2 with halberds, hammer psycannon, MC halberd psycannon, sword psycannon, hammer psycannon)

DreadKnight (personal teleporter, heavy incinerator, great sword)

 

His list:

Reclusiarch

5-7? death company (few power weapons, thunder hammer, infernus pistol)

Death company dread (blood talons, meltagun, heavy flamer)

Storm raven (multi melta, typhoon launcher, extra armour)

1 sanguinary priest (jump pack)

10 tactical marines (combi melta, meltagun, heavy bolter)

rhino (extra armour)

10 packless assault marines (power weapon?, 2 meltaguns)

rhino (extra armour)

5 devestators (2 lascannons, plasma cannon, missile launcher)

 

We rolled capture and control, pitched battle, I won the roll and chose to go second, and gave both my paladin squads counter attack, while he rolled for red thirst and none of his angels succumbed to it.

Notice how despite him having a few low ap weps I dont deploy my 5 man behind that barricade? that was SMRT...

 

I try and steal the initiative and fail, so on to turn 1.

 

Turn 1

He moves his storm raven 12, and thats pretty much it. He unloads on the 5 man and kills 2 and puts a wound on a third, ouch. Draigo's squad takes a wound, and thats it, my turn. The 3 pallies get into cover, while draigo advances. I Shunt the DK to distract him from my troops, and bring his storm raven down with sustained psycannon fire, it explodes, glancing his death company dread and immobilising it (I rolled 4 6's in a row), the DK flames his death company and kills 2.

Turn 2

He moves to try and take out the rather large distraction right in front of him. The death company rage towards it, while his rhino unloads his tactical squad. after shooting the dk takes 1-2 wounds, and the wounded guy in draigo's squad takes an instant death hit and draigo loses a wound. his Death company charge the DK and while hitting and wounding quite a few times, I manage to save all but 1 wound, and the DK proceeds to wound then instant kill the Reclusiarch. Draigo moves forwards and put the poor death company dread out of it's misery with their psycannons. The DK kills 2 death company then dies, the 3 remaining death company head towards the nearest target draigo....

Turn 3

His tactical's jump back in their rhino and rush down towards my 3 man squad along with his assault marines, but they both stay put in their rhinos. Shooting takes out 1 pally from the former 5 man squad which had gone to ground, while the death company move then assault draigo's squad, falling to the halberds before being able to do anything, Draigo then consolidates towards the rhino's. Draigo's squad blow up the tactical squad's rhino and then assault the contents and wipe them out for no loss ( Now face the power of this fully functional death staaaaar! ).

Turn 4

Having little choice, he drives his assault marines back to try and claim his objective. shooting takes a few wounds from some pallies and maybe a wound from draigo. Draigo's squad spreads out to be able to claim my objective if he happens to wipe out the 2 pallies, while being in range to shoot his assault squad's rhino, I succeed in destroying it (but no big explosion...)

Turn 5

He runs his assault marines behind the building, and shoots draigo's squad a bit, I shoot back and kill some more, but he doesn't run away... game goes on to turn 6....

Turn 6

He moves his assault marines over difficult terrain and rolls low, then runs 1, and bring's draigo down to 1 wound, I break draigo off to move towards his objective.

we then roll and the game ends, me winning by holding 1 objective and him contesting one (with his priest).

He was so close but not quite close enough at the end, he is a lovely guy to play, and is still catching up on playing 5th edition after a large gap (it was also his 8th game in 5th or something like that), Both of us forgot about his blood strike missiles too, which could have seriously messed up one of my squads had he remembered. I probably shouldn't bring my pally wing, It's rather nasty and a little over powered when I play my friends....

 

During the game my luck was generally pretty good, while his shooting wasn't, he only hit with both lascannon's from his devestators once, there was loads of scattering from his BS5 plasma cannon and I think he only passed 1 smoke launcher save (out of 4 hits).

 

Also playing at GW plaza they have those 4x4 boards, which plays to my short range more then it does to his speed and few long range weapons. I much prefer a 6x4 table, as it forces me to make choices I don't want to make (I usually combat squad in a 4+ objective game, and then lose because I don't have my deathstar....).

Good report, the pics came out well too.

 

The only thing I'm not sure about is the mixed force you fought:

SW Rhino, White Rhino, Red and White Tac/Assault Squad, Angels Sanguine Sang Priest, BA Dev's and a very Grey SR!

Guess I should do some painting

 

To those who read this, this is one tough army. The main game pictured here I did something like 20 or 25 wounds and only removed 4 or 5 models. It's tough with a jump/assault based force as, at I6, there's no reason you really want to charge either of his two squads' halberds - you don't have much of a squad left to do anything.

 

I also focused on my home objective a little too late, it's very annoying finishing 3" from where you needed to be. As for the 13-1 KP game that followed, the less said the better :D

heh, at least you have some stuff painted, my army is totally unpainted!

 

Maybe you should have combat squadded the tactical squad, and left the half with the heavy weapon on or near your objective. Hind sight is great ;)

 

And had you fired a salvo of bloodstrike missiles at one of my squads that could have hurt too, though considering how my invulnerable saves were, maybe it wouldn't heh.
