Tournament lists

Hey there,

After a hiatus of some time I want to get back into 40k. Space Wolves appeal to me (what's not to love about vikings in space?) and I was wondering what the "standard" tournament lists are.

Perhaps you guys could give me some starter pointers to help me decide on a list?

I prefer small army lists (don't paint that much/fast) that is still able to win more than is looses. I was thinking about a Logan based terminator list with drop pods but not sure how viable that is.

All suggestions are welcome and I'd prefer some explanation on the lists as well so that I can see why a list is working or why not.

Thanks in advance!

common cookie cutter lists are razorspam (easily painted hard, but lots of $$$), T-Lord spam (not that good above 1500) , and standard mech

razorspam is a list which uses small 5 man no upgrades units to just put down as many razorbacks as possible it usually has 6 from the troops section (5 5 man Grey hunter sqauds) and 3 long fang sqauds with Missiles and a razorback

T-lord spam is just 4 kitted out thunderlords (wolf lords on thunder wolves )with a sqaud of fenrisian wolves to take bullets and few smalll grey hunter sqauds and a lot of long fangs

standard mech is a bunch of grey hunter either 10 man or 6-7 man with wolf guard in rhinos, with long fangs and thunerwolves for support, also uses some rifleman dreadnaughts and wolf scouts

logan termies arent a bad list but those lists generally rely on how we can mix termie and power armor guys to do shannagins with wounds

I suggest taking a look at the Space Wolves Blog

Plenty of awesome tourny lists there, Adams in particular has been good to me.

I have loosely based mine on his and my latest accomplishment with that list was winning all 4 games I had last sat in a local GW Iron Warrior tourny.

Thank you Adam!

Entirely depends on whether you want to stick to the fluff or not. Most lists are basically Rune priests and 9 man grey hunters in rhinos. I find them a bit on the lame side since it more focused on using Jaws like crazy and then close combat, if you cant avoid it. Ragnar says no, my friends. He says no........

RP + 9 grey hunter isnt very cost effective from what i see it is more RP+6 grey hunter and a PF/combi melta WG. regardless now that jaws has to hit this combo isnt as good and i think living lightning will see a comeback along with muderous hurricane .

also @elithren we arent an assault army we are a counter assault army, our army is based on weakening the other army as it comes at us and then us close combat to clean up, not as our main weapon.

we used to be able to be an assault army then blood claws got destroyed and grey hunter with their uber grit took the spot light

Thanks for the suggestions so far. For now I am just looking for an effective list that I can pick up and play tournaments with. I like the fluff but I don't want to be held back by it. Effectiveness goed before fluff right now. Perhaps in the not so far future I will start looking for lists that are more play as intended.

Am I right into thinking that I should forget about Logan + terminators in droppods to be effective and get some Grey Hunters and Long Fangs (build from SM devastator squads right?)?

Cheers.

anything logan in a drop pod i would do would be with long fangs with 4 MMs. drop in turn, relentless, two tanks dead. awesome against IG

it may mean a dead logan next turn, but would you want 5 plasma cannon templates raining down on you from two tanks just because logan would die? or maybe there is that nasty vidicator that you just want to kill cause you know it will wreck your face. maybe even hey idk, a storm raven full of GK terms.....

think about the value both after the drop and before the drop...

if you can nuke something highly necessary BEFORE it does what it needs to do you have removed the tactical value of that unit. while it is alive and viable it is a tacitcal threat.

netlist all you want. razorspam all you want. but tactics will win the day, sure it may be hard gettng through all those heavy weapons, but RZBKS have paper armor. id rather get my forces to where they need to be FIRST instead of having to worry about making sure my big guns can fire. leave those big guns behind something, support fire with them, and assault the obj.

close with and kill the enemy using fire and movement.

Just get yourself a basic starting force 2 troops choices and a HQ, the "Battle Force box set" is a nice place to start, add in a box of Long Fangs with a RB, convert the RB so you can use it as a Rhino or RB. Pick yourself a HQ and play some games at the 1k level.

From there figure out what you want to add by reading these forums week after week. When you want to try something new first make a proxy then if you like the way it plays, buy the model. Soon you will be a wolf lord with 2k on the table and all mean and burly like.

qft

I would go one step further then the Battleforce which would be to buy two tactical Space Marine boxes to allow you to mix and match the two Space Wolves boxes.

That puts your possible GH/BC Troop choices up to 4 or even 3 GH/BC packs and one pack of Wolf Guard. It also leaves you various bits and parts to make a HQ choice for you as well.

I could see an easy list out of that which would be;

Wolf Lord

Rune Priest

WG x7

Wolf Scouts

GH pack melta x2

GH pack plasma x2

GH pack flamer x2

and then with the suggested Devastator box;

Long Fangs: Pack leader, ML x3, LC x2

Razorback

Thanks a lot for all the helpful answers!

I have been browsing that Spacewolf blog website (great help) and came across his GT list which is looking mighty fine.

For those who don't know it yet, here it is:

Rune Priest: Jaws/Lightning

Wolf tail talisman

Wolf Guard Terminator with combi-plasma, power sword

Wolf Guard Terminator with combi-melta, power sword

Wolf Guard Terminator with combi-plasma, wolf claw

Wolf Guard Terminator with combi-melta, chainfist

Wolf Guard Terminator with storm bolter, power sword, cyclone missile launcher

--> Land Raider

Wolf Guard: Combi Melta, Powerfist

7 Grey Hunters: melta, wulfen, standard

--> Rhino APC

Wolf Guard: Combi Melta, Powerfist

7 Grey Hunters: melta, wulfen, standard

--> Rhino APC

Wolf Guard: Combi Melta, Powerfist

7 Grey Hunters: melta, wulfen, standard

--> Rhino APC

Landspeeder: Multi Melta and Heavy Flamer

Landspeeder: Multi Melta and Heavy Flamer

5 Long Fangs: 4 Missile launchers

--> Razorback APC with Twin Linked Lascannon

5 Long Fangs: 4 Missile launchers

--> Razorback APC with Twin Linked Lascannon

Although he mentions in his blog that this is his 1750 point list I only come to 1644 points. To fill up the remaining points I thought about upgrading the Long Fangs to 6 bit with 5 Missile Launchers and upgrading the Grey Hunters to 8 big.

The remaining points can be spend on a Chooser of the Slain for that extra BS to help out the Jaws.

Thoughts?

Aha, I see where I went wrong..forgot to calculate the Land Raider :S

The original list comes to 1749 points then. Personally I am not to sure about those Landspeeders. I do see some use for them but perhaps 1 of them should be enough. I could spend those points on 2 more Long Fangs with Missile Launchers and a Chooser of the Slain. I guess playing the list will show if 1 Landspeeder is enough or not.

I used two speeders backed by Swift Claws to "herd" my enemy into a smaller group so my GH could close with more of them quicker.

Light armour tanks don't like multi-melta speeders :P

not any tank likes multi-melta speeders. Except ofcourse a monolith a stormraven gunship and a land raider

i would say find your play style really. there isnt a list out there to just jump into. and if you net list then you are really stuck playing that all the time. that is why i have a variety of things to pick from. i dont have one of everything, there are a few things that i need to get so that i can play with some more spread of weapons and vehicles and stuff, but for the most part my lists are all the same. i may change some small things in the list. but i never change a lot. which is why i suggest getting the battle force box an then proxy out for other units until you find what you want all the time.

Sure if you got $1000.00s of dollars to throw around buy it all, but if your on a budget and you know it will be years before you have your dream 5k chapter, I strongly suggest you take the advice of toaster and Ramses. Start off slow and methodical, don't pigeon hole yourself into a purchase that will force you to build the same list every time, instead be broad and make purchases that give you the most options and units that can be easily modified.

But in the end its your money and your hobby so, drink a brew and breath in the sage and roll them dice. Cheers
