What to add to my army to keep a theme?

Recommended Posts

I am a fan of masses of infantry, and when you are looking at masses of infantry in power armor it gets even better for me. While I have been building Blood Angels I have been working on painting my wolves, sorry no pictures I'm too embarrassed. I like to build one thing while I paint another its my MO.

My theme for my Space Wolves comes from the interpretation of them being space vikings more or less. I just imagine (this is from historical research and reading) hordes of Vikings landing in long boats and going ashore and just this massive army just ripping through everything. I have a similar idea for a Great Company just coming in on landers or in pods and just this horde of Wolves just going to town doing what they do best.

I have 20 Blood Claws, 20 Grey Hunters, 3 Bikes and a Rhino with a variety of HQs (Ragnar as a Wolf Lord/WGBL, Ulrik as a generic Wolf Priest and another generic Lord/WGBL). I'm just wondering what to add next to keep this theme. Do I continue to build a horde adding more Grey Hunters (or possible Blood Claws), Add some armor (even though I disdain it, hence why I own 1 Rhino), flesh out the Swiftclaws? Any other ideas?

Also I haven't played my SW army in a long while due to having to adjust things when the current book came out, then running out of painting time, and I don't want to be the guy that plays with a completely unpainted army anymore. I'm trying to step up my hobby skills and not use unpainted armies, but I can't do one project at once. Any tips?

Also quick question: Do I leave the new and old models separated? Fully half my army is the old 3rd Ed plastics from the SW Battle Force. One old BC and GH will have to be in new squads due to weapon distribution, but that aside from that do I keep them split evenly or mix them up? This is purely on an aesthetic scale and I'm just curious.

I'd say mix them up mate, nothing wrong with old and new minis. I have 3rd edition long fangs mixed in with new style missile launchers and old school Forge World stuff.

I like Swift Claws, I play a squad or two led by a Wolf Lord and or Priest.

Helped me a great deal in how I used them.

In this day and age of 40k a Rhino or two is essential if you want to be competitive. Maybe even a Crusader? A 15 man Claw unit led by Ragner piling out of it is still fairly scary!

In my 1500 point list I use 5 bikes, 2 speeders, 2 Rhinos packed with 10 man squads of Grey Hunters and 2 packs of missile toting Long Fangs. All led by a Wolf Lord on a bike from the Tactica above and they smash things!

I'll even throw in 5 terminators in a Land Raider if I play 2000 points.

Post some pics too mate, never be embarrassed, we can't all paint like some of the guys here.

Can't have a viking raiding party without a few boats to get 'em ashore! It's debatable on whether to go with tanks or drop pods when thinking of which "boat" is best, but personally, I like the added firepower and mobility a tank offers. Union.Jack's mention of a Crusader carrying 15 Claws and Ragnar is how I'd do it, followed by another 1-3 rhinos/razorbacks (I disdain rhinos, much preferring razorbacks with smaller packs).

Grey Hunters are arguably the best tac option in the astartes atm due to price and wargear options, so having them is never a bad idea. To keep with the theme though, I think Blood Claws are more "appropriate" for your theme, even though possibly not as foolproof as more GHs. When given the option of taking BCs, I'd prefer them as Swiftclaws or Skyclaws, rather than have them footslogging... unless it's to put a pack in a Crusader.

also, Fen. wolves. only need one or 2, but it's a common depiction of a Viking Jarl to be accompagnied by his faithfull hounds.

pity stormravens aren't in our codex, I'd love to mod one into looking more like a Drakar :)

you could ofc try that with a raider :)

An interesting array of options, and I am planning on adding some Long Fangs and Scouts (might dump my DA scouts with some SW parts). I find it funny the identical costs of Grey Hunters and Blood Claws. I'm working on putting some different lists together to see what I need. I will probably end up with at least another squad of Grey Hunters. I'm not planning on running Ragnar as Ragnar, but as a generic, I don't usually run named models too often. I had bought him as a generic (or should I run him as named)? I will admit I'm not looking forward to making him blonde.

I'm thinking of adding 3 or so Wolf Guard initially to get some leaders in with my claws and keeping them from running in a way I don't want. As for my painting, It is just not good, its mediocre and while I'm proud of my own work, I just know my own quality.

Yeah, I did a double-take at the identical costs. You're paying for bolter + improved stats + better upgrades versus special rules, basically.

From what I hear, the rules for Ragnar is amazing. Haven't fielded him myself since I don't want to use the current model. Also, it's debatable, but his hair doesn't have to be blonde and the most recent imagery of him has it black.

My using Ragnar was to repaint the original model so it didn't look so much like him. I was going to make him blonde so there was no confusing the fact that I wasn't using Ragnar, and instead just using his model for the equipment.

Is he that good though?

gives his unit furious assault. gives all units starting the assaultphase within 12" from him furious assault for the rest of the turn, one turn a game. has saga of the warrior born, 3+ armour, 4+ invulnerable, and gives his unit +D3 attacks for assaulting, instead of +1...

yup, he's that good. only downside is he forces you to assault when able... not really a problem though, rapid fire something and you can't assault. (altough with him, I don't see why you wouldn't want to...)

The real downside to Ragnar, in my eyes, is that he doesn't have any form of immunity against instant death. If you run against a lot of high strength shots or power fists he might get punked pretty fast. If he can get to combat without harm though he is going to tear into enemy units with his Str6, I6, and boat loads of attacks when he charges.
He can still be targeted in combat while in a unit, and he can still get hit by a template or blast weapon despite being in a unit. I don't mean to say he's bad by any means just that having warrior born instead of saga of the bear and no runic armor makes him a bit more vulnerable than some of the other options available.

True, but it sounded like your initial concern was that he'd be eliminated prior to reaching combat. Having him in a pack would all but remove that potential, save for a template, vindicare assassin, or obliterating the entire pack.

Being singled out in close combat is unfortunate, but if he hasn't won combat on the charge with a full pack on his heels, then he deserves the repercussions.

Many old-timers would still be confused, since GW artists all used to paint him with blond hair when he was first released. He went for at least 7 years as a blond, until the Studio started painting him with black hair with the revamp of the Studio army that coincided with the release of the 3rd Edition "mini-dex".

Is he that good though?

Yes, he's that good. He's pretty nasty all by himself, but he augments any unit that he has joined to be a significantly more powerful assault unit. Furious Charge plus additional attacks on the charge is a sweet. Although it is a concern, he isn't vulnerable to ranged weapons that might cause Instant Death while he is in his transport, and it usually isn't too hard to avoid being Power Fisted into oblivion. If you are careful about how you deploy the unit when you Disembark, then you should often be able to send a regular squad member base-to-base with the enemy PF model to prevent it from even being able to swing at Ragnar, if it even survives the combat.
