new blood angels player

You'll want to post this over in the BA subforum to get appropriate attention. That said, here are some general tips:

  • Rhinos.
  • More bodies than upgrades.
  • Troop Choices.
  • Sanguine Priests will make you happy. (The codex is more or less written assuming you'll have at least two on the field.)
  • Paint your doods. :D

Thade's tips are solid, as usual.

There's no one "right" way to run a Blood Angels army; they can do vehicle/mechanized infantry armies better than most due to the Fast rule and variety of Dreadnoughts. They can do jump infantry armies better than anyone.

They also do a balanced Marine playstyle better than most- put together a mix of a lot of things in your list that all work well in supporting each other.

The golden rule, though- find out what your play style is, and create an army to match. :P

Paint your doods.
QFT!

Starting out I'd say make a choice...do you want mass jump infantry or lots and lots of tanks? Make your choice and then write a list for the common game size in your area, be it 1500-2000 points. Then make that list. Then paint your doods. And figure out tactics for that list.

You can always add and subtract later, but it is really nice to start off with a fully functioning army that can hold its own in a semi-competitive environment. Sure you'll just play for fun 'fluff' games against friends but when the local gw hosts a tourney you will like having a chance to win with a sound list too!

But I'd start by choosing DOA or Mech. Combined lists can come later when you grow your army.

Although I second Thade, I would recommend one change. Don't buy rhinos, buy razorbacks because you can remove/add the top turret to play it as either a rhino or razorback if desired.

Take a look around the forum to see popular competitive builds if you want. Otherwise, buy what you think is cool and you won't go wrong.

Razorback kits are a solid investment. Keep the option for rhinos open. Land raider crusader upgrade spurs contain plastic assault cannon. That being said ACs are pricey.

I'm a firm believer that every blood angels player should play a rhino rush list once.

Attack Bikes are your friends

Fast vindis make people cry

If you like termies and don't mind losing you can put 30 termies a termie Libby and two vindis in a 2k list

Good luck and RHINO RUSH!

This is all terrible advice. You play blood angels because they're awesome. Buy a stormraven and some furioso dreads. There is absolutely nothing more fun you can do. Is it the most competitive thing ever? No. But it's awesome.

In all seriousness there is some pretty solid advice so far. The only comments i'd alter are thade's. That advice is leading you down a bit of a specific path. I've seen Blood Angels armies that run with extremely small amounts of troops and do very very even in competitive play. Troops are good but you should really decide what it is you want to do with your army first and that will alter your tactics and list significantly.

You picked a good chapter, the BA codex is very flexible with the types of lists it can field even at a higher level of play. Decide what you want to do and theme your army for it. Blood Angels are a synergy based army in the extreme, make sure what you have makes sense within the army.

EDIT: But seriously buy a stormraven and some CC dreads they're amazing.

Man, there's a lot of pro and anti Thade propaganda in this thread. I better make things better/worse for myself by offering some reasonable/baseless advice/drivel.

When I said "Rhino" I really meant transports; I didn't mean to recommend the Rhino kit over the Razorback kit. Frankly I'm not really sure why the Rhino kit exists; the Razorback is all of it and literally a bag of awesome chips along with it.

My advice was intended to lead him down a specific path: that to learning a marine army. He'll want some tac squads and some assault squads so he can build an all-comers list to practice with. If he goes all Sanguinary Guard or all Death Company that pigeon holes him into a specific army. That's not the case with a generalist BA force, to which he can add the other specialist units. Including a Raven with a CC dread or two. :D

Ah, poor Thade. No one was picking on you man, we are only trying to help a fellow brother equip himself properly.

Rhinos are a specific transport. I wish someone would have told me I could have built a rhino out of a razorback kit. Would have saved myself about $150.

Black Memories has the right idea too, get some of that 'fun' stuff that makes our codex unique. First 4 things I purchased for my army, 1x BA Battleforce, 2x Furioso kits, and 1x Stormraven. Can't say I regret any of it either!

Not going against your advice thade, but the purpose of telling him to buy other stuff is that what sets BA apart from other marine lists is not having to field tons of tactical squads and rhinos and other such things.

Again the rhino confusion is that rhinos are a specific transports and Blood Angels generally opt for razorbacks on account of them being fast vehicles. I realize you probably know this, but a new player doesn't.

No offense intended in my post, just another way to look at it. Jmac's idea of battle force + furiosos + raven is a solid idea. I'd also pick up mephiston just because he's a one man murder machine and will make you love that special characters are in the game. He's a hell of an HQ.

BTW Jmac: 2 furiosos and 1 raven? Sounds like you were awful mean to that 2nd furioso that was just walking around being sad on the battle field while his friend cruised in style.

Playing a BA army and "marine" army can mean two different things, so I'd simply point you to whatever it was that drew you to Blood Angels. They have a variety of options that can work well on the table: jump troops, fast vehicles, lots of dreads, Death Company, a balanced force, etc.... They also have quite a few unique units, so I think that for us to give better feedback, it would be helpful to know what drew you to BA.

In a BA list, I think the only thing you can end up with too many of are death company (not the box set, that's great) and tactical squads. I've got 20 death company, but I like them quite a bit and change them in and out and also run Astorath occasionally -- DC lists aren't for everyone. I built three tactical squads early on, but rarely does even one of them see the table anymore. Some people find more use for them, but there are so many other things I prefer in a BA army.

Oh, don't get me wrong! I'm not sensitive or offended. Just poking fun at myself.

Things that distinguish BA that aren't uber units:

- DoA

- Thirst

- Fast Rhino chassis

- insane apothecaries everywhere

- paint

Has anyone mentioned Baal Predators?

Scouting tanks are nothing to be sneezed at.

It's funny you mention that: No. I think Baals went from a BA staple to a unique but hardly indispensable unit in the BA list. I still play at least one because they have always epitomized the BA archetype. With the way rending works in 5ed, those Baals are duking it out with attack bikes and vanguards for those fast slots which starts to depend heavily on play style.
