IronKobra
Blood Angels have so many versions of their red it really is unreal. What technique helps you will massively determine what kind of red you want... Are you after the rogue trader bright orange red or the more gritter deep dirty red? thade
To get a BA-bright red (the kind you see in the codex pictures) I do this: Base coat in Krylon black spray paint. Coat of the darkest GW red (pretty sure it's Scab Red). Coat of the next red up (pretty sure it's Red Gore). Multiple cream-consistency washes with Blood Red, allowing each coat ample time to completely dry before applying the next. This comes out as a bright, beat red. Now, I'm not a BA player and so I don't paint entire models this color...I only paint a leg and some details this way, so it's not that painful. To paint a Rhino this way...I'd go nuts. What I would probably try to do then is is to find a spray paint red that was suitable (glossy or matte) and use it. If it's glossy, you can use matte varnish spray to kill the shine. Morollan
For a bright red I use Army Painter Pure Red primer with Baal Red shading and Blazing Orange highlights. If you want a darker red, swap the Pure Red for Dragon Red and tone down the shades and highlights accordingly.
IronKobra
In my experience the biggest factor in what shade of red your angels take is the primer colour. Black/White do have differences in the end result. Though as Morollan pointed out the pure red army painter is a great basecoat/primer in a bottle! If it comes out too bright, dumb it down with a coat of baal red wash. This is my recipe, and i love my bright red. Black/Mechrite Red/Coat after coat of blood red takes too much time and can get too layer-y in my opinion.
Brother_Byhlli
I tend not to believe in massive layers of paint. I think that increasing complexity of paint schemes gives you diminishing returns in terms of the paint job quality. If we're talking about basic troops, I suspect that anything beyond maybe a white base coat, a layer of red and a wash with some highlighting to finish is probably not worth it. The exception, of course, is painting competitions. But I would be more concerned with getting the detailing right than worrying about depth of colour. I also agree with JMac and IronKobra. Dark Angels can keep their black base coat. For a red paint job, I think that a white base is always going to be the best choice.
Brother Theseus
I prime them black, then my first coat of paint is mechrite red. After that, I progressively work up the red with thin layers of blood red. I use the citadel spray gun for this, and I realize that GW is laughing all the way to the bank. Once I run out of propellant I'll probably switch over to Army Painter pure red.
IronKobra
After years of painting BA's and diff primers and colour recipes including the old Blood Angels red spray from GW (which was actually more orange than red) I am liking the look of black > Mechrite > Mechrite/blood mix. Time comsuming but nice results...But I think in future for regular troops may use army painter dragon red pver black. This is how my mtechnique looks: http://i847.photobucket.com/albums/ab36/IronKobra84/WIPSternguard27.jpg
